How to turn on GPS and check location on your smartphone in 7 easy steps
1. Smartphone - using GPS

Turn on the phone.
Click, hold and drag on the lock screen to
release it.

To check if the phones GPS function is turned
on, click at the top of the screen, hold and
drag/flick downwards.

The resulting “Setting” page will appear from
the top of the screen and scroll downwards.
The “GPS” icon in the should be solid green if
it is turned on. If it is not on, click on the
“GPS” icon to turn it on.
To close the “Settings” page, click at the
bottom of the screen, hold and drag/flick
upwards.

Click on the “GPS Status” icon in the top of
the screen.
The “GPS Status & Toolbox” app will start to
locate the phone and obtain a grid reference.
The phone may take up to 5 minutes to gain a
GPS fix.

Note: Activating the GPS and taking the time
to gain a location first, means the time to
obtain a location when recording data in
“ODK Collect” will be very quick.
Once “GPS Status & Toolbox” app has a
location fix it will display as a “Latitude” and
“Longitude” reading here.

Once a fix has been obtained the app will
display the number of satellites it can see
and also the number it has a fix on. It will
also display the “Latitude” and “Longitude”
reading.
Click the central “Home” button on the
actual phone (not on the screen) to return to
the phones home page.

You can now click on the “ODK Collect” to
begin to collect data.
Note: The GPS function when turned on,
drains the phones battery quickly. Turn the
phones GPS function off when not required.
