  4. 4. emiliano Zapata (1879-1919) was born and raised in anencuilco, located in the state of morelos, south of mexico city. His parents were mestizo, a mixture of american indian and Spanish. the Zapatas raised cattle and horses and also farmed. When emiliano was 18 he was arrested for protesting along with other farmers against an hacienda (rich people who owned large amounts of lands) who was taking their land. the indians were really mad about this because they needed the land to grow their own food. to get the land and prevent farmers from getting it back, land barons hired former criminals to patrol the haciendas. emiliano attended and participated in meetings discussing ways to defend their land. and in September 1909 the citizens of his town elected him president in charge of defending their land. Haciendas were very greedy in taking in more and more land and it got to the point where indians had to farm their lands with rifles over their shoulders to protect their land or to fight against their enemy. in 1910 the mexican revolution started with emiliano guiding forces in southern mexico with pancho villa looming over the forces in northern mexico. the rebels felt like they had tried everything and that the only way they could get the attention of the mexican government was by way of force. the rebels were the key to bringing down the dictator diaz, and aided Francisco madero in coming to power. the Zapatista movement grew and became known as the liberation army of the South. at one point, the army had grown to 25,000 men. they overtook the capital of mexico, mexico city in 1914. instead of creating huge chaos in the city, they asked for food and drinks. Zapatista battles resulted in taking back the lands that were taken from the haciendas and redistributing them back to the farmers. an agricultural bank was founded and schools were opened for both children and adults. after the war, emiliano received word that a colonel wanted to leave the government’s operations for the Zapatista movement. and on april 10, 1919, emiliano went to the chinameca hacienda in morelos for the meeting. When he arrived, he was ambushed and shot to death by government soldiers. emilianos’ body was taken to cuautla for burial. 101 S.
