Increase is due to skilled trades shortage in Canada.
There has been a dramatic shift in demographics as far as trades students are concerned.
If students didn’t do well in academics they were put into shop class (Grease anyone?)
From there they may go on to trades school
After that (and one of the best kept secrets out there as far as careers are concerned) they went on to a great, rewarding, and profitable career in the trades.
There is a shortage of skilled trades workers in Canada so we are seeing more people investigating trades as a possible career. We are also seeing a demographic shift in the trades.
I have seen this shift in demographics in my own practice over the past 10 years of teaching.
Learning is a combination of a process (the development of knowledge and skills) and a product (the actual knowledge and skills obtained).
The idea of the portfolio is often linked to art students or investment bankers. The idea is a place to collect past work as a showcase. With the advent of the internet and web 2.0 tools, it is possible to create an electronic portfolio or ePortfolio. Dr. Helen Barrett (2010), a prominent researcher in the field of ePortfolios, defines an ePortfolio as “an electronic collection of evidence that shows your learning journey over time” (p.6).
At its most basic definition, a digital badge is an image or an icon that has some form of metadata attached to it. This information could be badge name, description of the criteria, evidence, date issued, expiry, etc. The information attached to the badge is up to the discretion of the issuer of the badge. For example in my Entry level Electricians course, when a student has finished 100% of a section they receive a “Module Completion” badge automatically through the LMS
As far as the resources and practices used in trades based training is concerned the future is looking towards open.
