Investors Eye the Precision Medicine Opportunity
With genetic sequencing becoming less expensive and a new U.S. government focus on the promise and power of personalized (or
precision) medicine, investors are taking notice. According to StartUp Health, 25% of the top ten largest investment deals of Q1
2015 were focused on the genomics subsector. Companies working to improve the collection and analysis of genomic data may aid
the discovery of new, highly personalized treatments for rare and chronic conditions.

Precision Medicine: Great Promise, But Many Barriers Remain
In early 2015, the concept of personalized medicine received widespread attention when President Barack Obama outlined his vision
for accelerating research and investment in technologies (such as genomics) that can lead to precision treatments for disease. While
this concept may appear futuristic, personalized medicine is already here. Genetic data is being used to identify rare conditions and
power personalized treatment in cancer and more.
However, precision medicine faces many barriers that may slow its widespread adoption. Some of those identified by Enspektos
include:
Health Data Collection and Analysis: Some believe that the key to delivering personalized treatments for the masses lies in
more aggressive screening and testing to gather baseline health data that can be tracked and acted upon. Yet, others are
skeptical that collecting more health data will lead to improvements in health and wellbeing.
Economics: Genetic screening is expensive and some insurance firms are refusing to pay for testing they perceive is of limited
clinical value.
Science: The science of genomics is still very uncertain. For example, there is no clear link between many genetic mutations
and disease.
