  • So - as you already know, Indie Games are being released on major platforms and to great kudos/success. Rock!
  • You may not know that traditional forms like point & click adventures are also getting a fresh look, and really pushing the envelope when it comes to creating a sense of place.

  • Small, short experiences are also being born - that challenge our assumptions about what we see & do in a "game" or on a web page.

  • Others push you to think hard about how you spend time in a game space, and why. This is very inspiring to us at TGC.

  • And games that focus on ambiance and accessiblity, inspired by our own work – are in this summer’s top downloads on iPad and iPhone. Summing up: there are more and more cool, atmospheric, introspective games out there - and most of them are very cheap or FREE to play! So take a break from what you know - and check them out! You will be surprised - and maybe even impressed!

  • Game Designers tend to come in two types: those focused on the experience of playing a game and those that focus on the mechanics of the game. It’s not easy to marry mechanics to experience. The first couple of games I’ll focus on are heavy on mechanics, the second two are heavy on experience.
  • Sometimes game designers come up with ideas that sound great on paper but aren’t great to play. This game is one of those, but it explores some new territory that I think is important.
  • Eventually you end up out at the far branches of content, and the quality of that content degrades. This discourages exploration. You have to make the difficult/rare stuff COOL.
  • Similar to an experiment I did a few years back with user-generated conversation trees.
  • Manufactoria is an example of a game that translates pure mechanics into fun. It’s fairly traditional for a puzzle game, but it struck me as being just the right length and just the right challenge.
  • The Avernum series from Spiderweb Software has been around since the beginning of time (spiderweb since 1994), and the engine and graphics haven’t changed much. But the experience of playing the game is just right. This isn’t about mechanics, it’s about exploring a well realized world with clever writing. One of the interesting things about RPGs is that they don’t have to be balanced.
  • The Journey down is just the first, short (free) chapter in a longer traditional adventure game, but it gets that old-school LucasArts feel just right. One of the big challenges for indie designers is to marry the aesthetic and the mechanical.
