What are the keywords, synonyms and related
terms?
Hi, today I’m going to introduce you to how to access information that I hope will be useful to you as students at WelTec
First, I’ll introduce myself, my name is Natalie Smith and I’m a Reference & Liaison Librarian here at WelTec in the Learning Commons. I have been assigned the schools of Business and IT and Hospitality to liaise with and can provide reference assistance to students as required.
The plan for today is to introduce you to the Library catalogue, research databases and our e-book providers. This is an interactive session and you are welcome to ask questions at any time.
I’d also like to promote the assistance that the Library can provide for you: - READ SLIDE
Ask question…wait for any responses then use next slide to offer some suggestions.
I’d like to look at where you can find information:
Our WelTec Library
Your local Library
Databases
Books
Journals
Websites
Newspapers
There are some specific tools you can use to search and obtain access to some great databases, catalogues and websites that you’ll be able to apply to any topic you are researching. You may or may not have heard of any of these before? Has anyone used any of these?
First we’ll start with how you access the Library website. There are two ways to do this from the WelTec website you can either go to the link on the bottom of the page or you can find the Library under the Support Services tab.
Here’s what the WelTec Library website looks like. It provides access to not only our Library catalogue but also our research databases, subject and research guides, e-book providers and alerts you to Library services too.
Let’s begin with how to search the Library catalogue, it’s fairly intuitive and just requires you to search using this box. Type your required term and click search. – You may like to go live at this point and try a search, explain navigation etc.
When searching for ‘Human resource management’ here are the results – use slide to explain how to refine, try the search in the SMART catalogue and how there might be access provided to electronic resources.
When you’ve found a book/resource you want you can see where it is located, which collection it is in, the call or shelf number and if it is available. Here’s an example of a box located at 3 different campuses. As WelTec students you can request items from different campuses.
Go live to do this.
You might also like to mention that students can ‘sign-in’ to the Library website using their student ID and password (this is a four digit number that they can ask at the Library issue desk to be set for them) and then they can reserve books, request interloans, see what they have out and renew them if they can.
You may want to look at a textbook in the areas of your study to assist with an assignment

Mention again when searching our catalogue you can opt to select ‘Try this search in the SMART Catalogue’ and then it will show you what other Libraries hold these books – they can then be reserved. NB. We can’t access other libraries electronic resources though.
Next we’ll look at accessing our research databases and in particular our main database provider EBSCOhost.

We have two providers of e-books, one is ProQuest Ebook Central and one is Safari. They can be accessed from the Library website – see e-books under Find Information
Frist we’ll have a look at ProQuest Ebook Central – navigate to this page, explain that it does require you to sign-in so encourage the students to do this whilst on campus. You can also mention there is a library guide on this to tell you more – available from the Library website, or in hardcopy at the Library desk.
Try a search live – as these screenshots are sometimes too small and are explained better in person. You can either read online or choose to download a copy of an e-book to read via a book reading app. This book will be ‘on loan’ for 1 day or can be requested for up to 7 days. Again – mention using the guide for further information.
Safari is our other e-book provider, mainly specialising in technology and business books and usually for titles published in the last two years. You don’t have to sign up to access this provider but you do have to be a WelTec student and accessing it either from on-campus or if you are off-campus, via Moodle or Citrix. Try a search.
Before you access these resources it pays to spend a little bit of time looking at what you are researching and coming up with the concepts/key terms you are going to be using.
Let’s do this now – what is your assignment topic and what subject are you looking for?
Write these down…
