How long must we keep them? … Sorting, destroying, discarding, eliminating… are words which still frighten A more and more shared issue. Once analog media is digitized, archive departments must face a growing pressure urging them to discard their analog or digital original media essentially for economical reasons. It is an act of good management! When managing audiovisual archives, selecting materials occurs at different times of the whole archiving process: during collecting, when storing, when digitizing and of course when discarding. However, the discarding of audiovisual media is a non-reversible action which supposes to take some precautions and to respect prerequisites and guidelines So it is important to build a consistent, effective and clear policy. 4
