Psychoanalysis <ul><li>Psychoanalysis is the taking apart and clarifying dreams, thoughts and the like of a patient's unconscious and making them clear ; as though to piece them together into a story or alibi of the patient. </li></ul><ul><li>Childhood Development is one of the many forms of this practice. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Narcissism <ul><li>Narcissism stems from the (a) unconscious self-love of oneself, (b) over indulgent parents as a young child or (c ) never getting from that stage of over-indulging one's desires as a child. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Eros & Thanatos <ul><li>Eros is the driving “life force” of humans’ unconscious. It is based around lust and libido; procreation and living. </li></ul><ul><li>Thanatos is the driving “death force”. Eros’ opposite; It’s based around the impending doom of the lasting sleep. </li></ul><ul><li>Eros and Thanatos work together and against each other to create life and to destroy it </li></ul>

Dream Theory <ul><li>Freud’s theory of dreams was very sexualized and full of erotic symbolism, most of the time. </li></ul><ul><li>Things that are hollow and can contain things/objects represent female genitalia. *“Apples, peaches and fruits in general symbolize breasts.” </li></ul>*All quotes are from the webpage “Freud’s Approach to Dreams”

Dream Theory (cont.) *Snakes, pens, cannons and things of similar nature represented the male’s genitalia. *“All kind of playing (playing instruments also), sliding, slipping and breaking branches are symbols of masturbation…” *Dancing and activities that require rhythm are associated with intercourse. Falling into water represents birth; the king and queen or other royal figures represent parents.

Anxiety & Oedipal Complex <ul><li>Anxiety is derived </li></ul><ul><li>from fears and </li></ul><ul><li>phobias made by </li></ul><ul><li>either moral, </li></ul><ul><li>realistic or neurotic </li></ul><ul><li>ideas. </li></ul><ul><li>The Oedipal </li></ul><ul><li>Complex stems </li></ul><ul><li>from the myth of </li></ul><ul><li>Oedipus Rex, who </li></ul><ul><li>killed his father and </li></ul><ul><li>married his mother, </li></ul><ul><li>without realization. </li></ul>

Anxiety & Oedipal Complex (cont) <ul><li>There are three </li></ul><ul><li>types of anxiety </li></ul><ul><li>and seven types of </li></ul><ul><li>Defense </li></ul><ul><li>mechanisms that </li></ul><ul><li>go along with them. </li></ul><ul><li>The complex is </li></ul><ul><li>nothing more the </li></ul><ul><li>unconscious desire </li></ul><ul><li>for the opposite </li></ul><ul><li>sexed parent and a </li></ul><ul><li>murderous intent to </li></ul><ul><li>kill the same sexed </li></ul><ul><li>other. </li></ul>

My Final Thoughts <ul><li>I learned that </li></ul><ul><li>Haitian Zombiism </li></ul><ul><li>is (in Freudian </li></ul><ul><li>terms) a more </li></ul><ul><li>intense version of </li></ul><ul><li>his Mourning & </li></ul><ul><li>Melancholia theory </li></ul><ul><li>The human mind is </li></ul><ul><li>a giant puzzle that </li></ul><ul><li>must be pulled and </li></ul><ul><li>pieced together </li></ul><ul><li>through out various </li></ul><ul><li>tests and stages of </li></ul><ul><li>our life. But It must </li></ul><ul><li>be done VERY </li></ul><ul><li>carefully </li></ul>
  11. 11. My Final Thoughts(cont) <ul><li>Through learning about Freud and his psychoanalytic theories made me understand more about the human mind and behavior. </li></ul><ul><li>Reading on Freud showed me how many people were actually affected by his work and him as a person. </li></ul>
