Editor's Notes

  • Note:The egg slides visually describe the workflow issues for producing a great product today. Which put simply - the design and development disciplines literally don’t work smoothly together. This set of slides can be clicked through fairly quickly as you’re not talking to each slide, rather using each slide to briefly illustrate a moment in time in the design process. This section should last 2-3 minutes max.The design team has that light bulb moment and creates a great design solution to the problem in hand… in this case they’ve design the ‘[egg’ what can be more perfect than this! (the vision slide), so we’ve got the idea now we need to build it… the design team takes the idea and produces the specs (spec slide), followed by a series of rough comps (comps slide) this is normally when the walls are plastered with sticky notes… once the composition start to feel right the design team then will start to bring the look and feel to life in applications like Photoshop (psd file slide), before finally producing prototypes to illustrate how the application should run and look… may be they’d traditionally use something like HTML/CC to present the prototype, (html/css slide)… At this point everything gets handed over to the development team (production slide)…. Who have to break a part all the work that has been done so far and reassemble it into a working production application. The result is something that looks close to the original design… it looks pretty good… maybe even good enough that the client thinks it’s the same but often the subtlety that made the idea great in the first place has been lost in the translation (final result slide). This isn’t the development or design teams fault… it’s simply that the tools or platforms that are being used simply aren’t working smoothly together… the design team talks in PSD, AI, and PDF files while the development team talks in C# and VB… they’re just different. (Development/Design Workflow slide 1).Expression, Visual Studio, Silverlight and WPF use a common UI language called XAML which is the same across all tools and platforms and allow the design and development disciplines to work transparently together. There is a separation between UI and underlying code that enables concurrent and compatibility workstreams which both reduces development time and allows the finished application to deliver on the initial vision (Design/Development Workflow slide 2).The XAML workflow of the Microsoft platforms and tools is a huge benefit to the development team as it enables UI experimentation and finessing of details late into the development cycle while preserving the underlying code. And from the coders point of view it allows them to work on the code safe in the knowledge they are not effecting the UI layer.
