  3. 3. The IDEA • Does it solve a problem or make a promise or gain? • Are there a lot of other books in your market? You want this. • Is there search word volume? • Is your solution unique? • Would you write it for free? Yes? But can you AFFORD to do that? Ask who would read and purchase it – this is too much work for a charity endeavor! © 2013
  4. 4. The HOOK • What makes your book UNIQUE? • Does it make a BIG promise? • Does it stir an EMOTION? • Could it create a MOVEMENT? • Is it CONTROVERSIAL? • Is it SPECIFIC? • Is it POLARIZING? • Could it build a COMMUNITY? © 2013

The LEAD • Create an avatar on Google that you will be writing to • First 10 pages- What’s in it for the reader? • Who are you and why should I listen to you? • How will I know it will work for ME? Show evidence how it’s worked for others!! • Do I need it RIGHT now? (FYI the closing day of a launch is bigger than the 1st) • Go over the top… you will get more fans © 2013

The OUTLINE • Have someone who doesn’t know your topic ask you questions • You will need 8 cards for 100 page book • Tell them what you’re gonna tell them – tell them – tell them what you told them • Write your outline on cards so you can move them around – NOT a legal pad • You can recap at front of every chapter “Remember when we discussed…” “Previously we talked about….” • Take 10 index cards – get an index box to keep them in and label the box with book title © 2013
  7. 7. • Write each chapter on top of each card • Write a chapter title – convert it into a question • Write 3 main “prompt words” on the back of each card • Lay cards out so you can see them all • Re-arrange in congruent order • Throw 2 cards away and tear them in half (REALLY!) • Take 1st chapter card (or favorite chapter) in your hand • Take 4 blank cards (these will be sub- chapters HINT you can use another color card to make it easier) © 2013
  8. 8. • Write 4 most burning questions you are going to answer on front • Write key phrases on back to remind you what you will write later • Throw away ANOTHER card (SERIOUSLY!) • Write two paragraphs on why you need to read this chapter and how it fits into sequence • Write a paragraph transition at the bottom of each chapter leading into the next • Use other references with links to other experts • Record 3-5 minutes each answering the questions on your 24 subchapter cards © 2013
  9. 9. • Piece it together and edit • Scrivener2 software allows you to build index cards and move then around then upload to Kindle • allows you to drop in a chapter at a time for readability • Index calculator- should write at a third grade level • HINT – screenshot every video with a link as intro with story and facts in the book “Let me tell you how and why I wrote this chapter” “If you found me on YouTube this is tied to my book and you may want to pick it up at • Font size is usually 16 for Kindle • Save doc from word to .txt file so you can cut and paste to upload other places © 2013

The CHAPTER HEADS • The story about the story – add a story and be VERY personal • Reference previous chapters • Reference other books you’ve written or other authors • Add video • Record so you can sell it as an audio • Judge the reaction of person asking the question so make sure you are clear with explanation © 2013
  11. 11. The INDEXING and POLISH • Add your bio, photo and contact info “Any claims for success are up to you” • Add your lead in • Add links to other books and products (in your Amazon Store) • Create your Table of Contents © 2013

The HOOK and TITLE • Makes a promise • Stirs an emotion • Has a “Keystone” (hot pizza delivered in 30 minutes) • Be specific and create a movement • Polarize an audience or create a community • RESEARCH – Google’s best sellers via category, look at cover and table of contents, highlight what you love about those and line through what you don’t and you will be able to come up with your title. © 2013
  13. 13. • Plain covers highlight the largest and more important text. • HINT – If your book is on Kindle you can change text and cover to line test and add website to front cover on bottom if there is space • Your subtitle needs to be keyword relevant if your title is not • Use GIANT verbs “Fix” “BEG” – curiosity statements make people open your book – • HINT – Watch Cosmo and National Enquirer's title for ideas © 2013
  14. 14. • Research “most read articles and “most read email” in NY Times • things now trending to write about or speak • – best blogs • Google keyword tools – create your own author page on Amazon
  15. 15. The WRITING of YOUR INTRO • It’s the purpose to sell them into buying the book • Identify the problem of goal • Provide the solution • Reassert your credibility • Show benefits • Give proof
  16. 16. • Make a promise of what will be better • WARN again waiting “You found this because you are looking for solutions. You want… You’ll get that and much more” (give an example and close with Now Turn this Page and read • Ask yourself “If I had a Super Bowl audience and I only had 3 minutes to sell them to buy before they left – what would I say?” © 2013

OTHER HINTS • KDP Select at Amazon – entire book goes into lending library – you can’t give it away anywhere else except in the hard cover. • Every 90 days make the book FREE for 5 days – it re-generates your book • Be prolific – write and put out all the time to build your tribe • Cheap people won’t buy a 99 cent book but WILL borrow and you get paid $2.99 from Amazon for allowing your book to be borrowed © 2013
