  3. 3. 6LowPAN and WirelessHART● 6LowPAN and WirelessHART are two overlapping wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies● Both work using the same radio technology and same hardware (2.4GHz IEEE802.15.4)● WirelessHART is the wireless version of the HART protocol, used in the continuous process industry since the 1980s● 6LowPAN is the wireless version of the IPv6 protocol, the next generation of TCP/IP and the InterneteSONIA is made possible by funding from the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking.

WirelessHART● Advantages: ● HART is very well known in the process industry (petrochemical), many engineers already familiar ● Many products in the market, fair level of interoperability ● Standardized data model● Disadvantages: ● Not known/not useful in other application areas ● Not compatible with other networks (IT), gateways/adapters needed. ● Based on old technology / backwards compatibleeSONIA is made possible by funding from the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking.
  5. 5. 6LowPAN● Advantages: ● Open/free standard ● Many interoperable suppliers ● Based on IPv6, compatible with all IP-based networks ● Compatible with future networks (not just todays)● Disadvantages: ● Not a standard for sensor data, actual data format covered by other standards (several available, some industrial standards such as ISA100, WirelessHART main competitor)eSONIA is made possible by funding from the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking.

Outlook● WirelessHART is ideal for process plants that already use (wired) HART and want to upgrade to wireless● Not useful in many other application areas (e.g. No bi- directional communications/ no control)● Mainly pushed by few vendors (Emerson, USA)● 6LowPAN is open, free, gaining widespread support. Integrates seamlessly to IPv6 networks● Enables same technology from WSN to ERP (e.g. Web Services)eSONIA is made possible by funding from the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking.
