Open a PowerPoint presentation and click on the Add-Ins button. When the list of icons appear, select the microphone as the only highlighted icon. If any others are highlighted, turn them off. Next click on the recording options icons; the one next to the questions mark (?) Next slide
The recording options give you a number of different choices and most often these do not need to be changed from the default selections. The choices in the program menu that are already checked allow for the recording to be paused when you first begin. This is important so you have a chance to adjust your microphone recording volume once again before you actually begin recording. If you will be using your mouse to point out things you want your audience to notice then make sure the record mouse cursor is checked. And, if you want the cursor to be even more obvious than how it normally looked, check the “highlight cursor” box. Unless you are completely satisfied with your recording, you will want to edit in Camtasia when you are finished. Editing provides you with many options you can add including your table of contents after you have finished your recording. If you are recording your PowerPoint only and will be finished after your last slide, select the stop recording at end of presentation. Other choices include continue recording or pause and continue or prompt to continue recording. The video and audio menu provide options that allow for audio only or audio with video capture. Most important is the audio source drop down menu. You will want to select the audio source that you are using to record. The best recording comes from using an external microphone that is plugged into your USB computer port. It will show up in the menu and must be selected for it to work. Once you have selected it, you can adjust the volume with the slider. The volume level should move from left to right (green to red) as you speak. Adjust the volume up or down so when you speak the colored band moves close the far right, but doesn’t remain there. If it is staying the red zone, your recording will likely be distorted and you may have to re-record it. You will have another chance to adjust this after you click “record”.
When you are finished adjusting your audio settings, close the window and click again on the Add-Ins button. Then click on the record button. The recording is paused if you checked this box in the recording options. Here you can adjust your recording volume level again prior to actually recording. When you are ready. Click the begin recording button. You can narrate your PowerPoint using the microphone headset and advance the slides as you normally would. If you are not satisfied with a specific slide, use the Ctrl+Shift+F9 hot key to pause the recording. Then when you are ready to resume, repeat the Ctrl+Shift+F9 and re-record the slide you were unhappy with. When the recording is opened in the editor, you can delete the unwanted slide. At the end of the PowerPoint, simply press Esc and the recording will end.
