Youth Criminal Justice Act Powerpoint 2

 1. 1. Chapter 2 task By: Taylor Fox SOCIAL 9
 2. 2. What I Thought Before Research

Before researching for this project I thought that the Youth Criminal Justice Act should be harder on youths who commit crimes. I thought that they simply are not being hard enough on young offenders, but I didn’t really know how they should be harder on them or what they should do better to decrease youth crime. My opinion was that they were getting off way to easy and more and more crimes were being committed by young offenders. So I decided to get a better informed opinion and find out some more information about young offenders and how the Youth Criminal Justice Act really works.

 3. 3. What I Learned During Research

While researching, I learned more about the Youth Criminal Justice Act and how it works.

I learned how the Act outlines how the police, judge, lawyer, social workers, mental health workers, community volunteers, and the Youth Justice Committee will respond to a youth who is accused or found guilty of breaking the law. First, if the youth is charged, the offender is taken to court and then either to the judge or to a prosecutor who uses evidence to show that the they have broken the law. Then they are either given a sentence or required to complete a certain program that is decided by the Youth Justice Committee.

 4. 4.

When young offenders commit a crime and are not charged, they get off with a warning and are referred to a program for help. But, if the program does not help or affect them in any way they can go out and commit the same crime again.

I also found that each crime needs to be treated individually and that every young offender needs to be punished appropriately for the crime that they have committed according to their level of responsibility.

The general public perceives that young offenders committing crimes and being charged is on the increase and that punishments need to be harsher. Factual data does not support these perceptions. Stats say that young offender crime is actually down since 1993.

 6. 6. What I Thought After Research

After researching this project my opinion has stayed the same because after all the research I’ve done I still found that young offenders are getting off to easy and should be punished the first time for what they have done. I think that the many steps that young offenders go through are good and can have an affect on some people but the people that are not affected can go and commit the crime again. Therefore, the punishments need to be improved so that the young offender will not repeat their actions. As a society we simply cannot keep letting this crime happen. We need to fix this and we need to fix this now.
