* Farshad Farivar says that there is lot of difference between
modern kayaks and native kayaks in all aspects i.e.
conception, manufacturing, design and usage. Modern Kayaks
are used for many different purposes like slow touring, easy
touring, racing, long distance ocean excursions, fishing etc.
Recreational Kayaks are majorly designed and built for
people interested in photography, fishing, peaceful paddle on
a lake or safe and protected salt water at a distance from
oceans.
* Farshad Farivar says that sea kayaks are designed and
manufactured for one to three travelers in open water and
are majorly used in trade for stability, sea. Sea kayaks have
longer water line, rudders, skegs. Modern sea kayaks have
two or more internal bulkheads.

craft which was developed for leisure. These sit-on-top
variants of sports craft is manufactured using
polyethylene which ensures strength and affordability. This
type of kayaks are mostly used for fishing and SCUBA diving,
reason being that it helps participants to enter and exit
water easily, change the position of their seating and access
hatches and storage wells.
* Farshad Farivar says that the surf boats have flat bottom and
hard edges. Surf Kayaking comes in two forms- High
Performance (HP) and International Class (IC). HP boats have
nose rocker and no tail rocker. It has flat hulls, sharp rails
and four fins that helps them to move at high speed. IC boats
are at least 3 meters long. It has convex hull but has no fins.
Surfing on international boats is smoother and more flowing.

* Another surf kayak that Farshad Farivar talks about is wave ski. Wave
ski is closed cockpit and is similar to sit-on-top in terms of paddling
technique, design, performance and construction. Farshad Farivar
says that whitewater kayaks construction ensures that boat remains
safe when moving in fast water. Whitewater kayak ranges from 4 to
10 feet long and are of mainly two types- Play boat and Creek boat.
Play boat is used for carrying on tricks in individual water features.
Creek boats are majorly used for running narrow, low volume water
ways. Another category between these two boats is river running
kayaks. These boats are used by paddlers who do not involve in
whitewater surf much.
* According to Farshad Farivar Squirt boating involves paddling on
surface and underwater as well. Another type of kayak boat that
Farshad Farivar talks about is known as Canoe Sprint. In Canoe Sprint
there are three categories- K1 (Single Paddler), K2 (Two Paddlers)
and K4 (Four Paddlers).

*Next type of kayak Is Surf Ski which has an
open cockpit and requires expert balance and
paddling skills. These types of kayaks are used
for racing in New Zealand, Australia and South
Africa.

used by military during Second World War but
now days it is used for both competition and
recreation as well.
