Vitamins and minerals

 1. 1. Vitamins and Minerals Honors Biology
 2. 2. Understanding the Role of Vitamins and Minerals

Living organism rely on highly complex processes to perform and regulate internal functions that are necessary to maintain life

 3. 3. Understanding the Role of Vitamins and Minerals

Processes are in place to:

build cells that make up body structures

meet the separate needs of different types of cells

permit different cell types to carry out its own specific functions

help maintain cellular structure and performance

alter the type and degree of cellular activity under changing circumstances

 4. 4. Understanding the Role of Vitamins and Minerals

communicate and coordinate each cell’s activity with the activity of other cells and organs in the body

adjust cellular behavior, as needed, to permit a coordinated response of the whole organism to its environment

dispose of waste

govern the disposal of cells when their job is

 5. 5. Understanding the Role of Vitamins and Minerals

What is homeostasis???

 6. 6. Understanding the Role of Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are among the necessary substances needed to maintain homeostasis.

 7. 7. Vitamins

organic molecules

required in the diet in small amounts

deficiencies can cause severe problems

controls many body functions by helping enzymes to function

 8. 8. Functions of Vitamins

There are 13 essential vitamins, including:

vitamin C- helps to heal wounds, improves iron absorption

vitamin K- essential for blood clotting

vitamin D- promotes bone growth; aids in absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus

Vitamin A – need for eye health

 9. 9. Minerals

inorganic molecules that are needed in very small amounts (most)

human body does not make minerals; they must be consumed

controls several body functions

 10. 10. Functions of Minerals

There are 18 essential mineral, including:

Calcium- strong bones and teeth, blood clotting

Magnesium- strong bones and teeth, used to make proteins

Potassium- regulates heartbeat and produces muscle movement

Phosphorous-part of a nucleotide (DNA/RNA backbone component).
