1. 1. The beginning of the ISLAMIC year
Moharram
2. 2. This is the first month of the Islamic Calendar and one of the four Sacred Months (al-Ashhur al- Hurum).
Regarding ‘New Year’, it has been mentioned that the Islamic calendar was initiated by Umar (r) to resolve the issue of ‘dates’ to be written on letters. This is a historical fact which has been mentioned to show how and why the hijri calendar started and why Muharram was chosen as the first month of the calendar.
3. 3. Historical Events
01 Muharram: Start of the new Islamic year
01 Muharram 24 A.H: Martyrdom of HazratSayyadnaUmarIbnKhattab (r.z.a), buried in Madina alongside the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
04 Muharram 24 A.H: Start of the Caliphate of HazratSayyadnaUthmanIbnAffan (r.z.a)
10 Muharram: The blessed day of Ashura.
10 Muharram: The martyrdom of Sayyadna Imam Hussain (r.z.a) in Karbala, Iraq
6. 6. HazratHussain RA, along with a number of his family members, was martyred on10th of Muharram, 61 H, in the field of Karbla.
7. 7. The point to be noted is that Muharram is a sacred month NOT because the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (saw) was martyred in this month. It is sacred because Allah made it sacred along with three other months and told us about it in the Quran.
(Al-Ashhural- Hurum).
8. 8. The Sunnah
HazratIbnAbbas (Radiyallahu 'anh) reports that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) arrived in Madinah and found the Jews observing fast on the day of ‘Ashura… They said: "It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Hazrat Musa (AS) and his people and drowned Pharoah and his people, and Musa (‘AS) observed fast out of gratitude. And we also observe it." The Holy Messenger of Allah (pbuh) responded: "We have more right, and we have closer connection with Sayyidina Musa ('Alaihis-Salaam) than you have"; so Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) observed fast (on the day of ‘Ashura) and gave us orders to observe it. [SahihBukhari and Muslim]
HazratIbnAbbas (Radiyallahu 'anh) relates that when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhiwaSallam) said: "If I survive till next year, I will definitely observe fast on the 9th of Muharram (as well)." [Sahih Muslim]
9. 9. Abu Qatada(ra) relates that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said that the fast on the 10th of Muharram atones for the sins of the preceding year. [Sahih Muslim]
Abu Huraira(ra) reports that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said that after Ramadan, the fasts of Muharram have the greatest excellence. [Sahih Muslim]
Mu’awiyahibn Abu Sufyan(ra) relates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: It is the day of ‘Ashura. Allah has not made fasting obligatory for you. But I am fasting. [Sahih Muslim]
During his lifetime of Muhammad(pbuh) a number of senior Sahaabah were martyred ; such as Hamzahibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, ZaydibnHaarithah, Ja’faribnAbiTaalib and ‘Abd-AllaahibnRawaahah, but he did not do any of the things that these people do.
70 qaris sent by Prophet (s) were all martyred, yet he did not mourn their killings in this savage manner.
The battlefield of Uhad where many Sahabas were martyred and burried
12. 12. The prophet’s warning
Al-Bukhaari (1294) and Muslim (103) narrated that ‘Abd-AllaahibnMas’ood(ra) said: The Prophet (pbhu) said: “He is not one of us who strikes his cheeks, rends his garment, or cries with the cry of the Jaahiliyyah.”
