3. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD
is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your
strength. 6 These commandments that I give
you today are to be on your hearts
4. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about
them when you sit at home and when you
walk along the road, when you lie down and
when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on
your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
9 Write them on the door frames of your
houses and on your gates.
32. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I
thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.
When I became a man, I put the ways of
childhood behind me.
37. 20 And praise be to God Most High, who
delivered your enemies into your hand.”
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything
38. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will
be with me and will watch over me on this
journey I am taking and will give me food to eat
and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to
my father’s household, then the Lord will be my
God 22 and this stone that I have set up as a
pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you
give me I will give you a tenth.”
39. 4 We will not hide these truths from our
children; we will tell the next generation
about the glorious deeds of the LORD,
about his power and his mighty wonders.
5 For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave
his instructions to Israel. He commanded
our ancestors to teach them to their
children,
40. 6 so the next generation might know them—
even the children not yet born—and they in
turn will teach their own children. 7 So each
generation should set its hope anew on
God, not forgetting his glorious miracles
and obeying his commands.
41. 1 These are the commands, decrees and laws
the LORD your God directed me to teach you to
observe in the land that you are crossing the
Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children
and their children after them may fear the
LORD your God as long as you live by keeping
all his decrees and commands that I give you,
and so that you may enjoy long life.
42. 4 So Joshua called together the twelve men
he had chosen—one from each of the
tribes of Israel. 5 He told them, “Go into the
middle of the Jordan, in front of the Ark of
the LORD your God. Each of you must pick
up one stone and carry it out on your
shoulder—twelve stones in all, one for each
of the twelve tribes of Israel.
43. 6 We will use these stones to build a
memorial. In the future your children will ask
you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7 Then
you can tell them, ‘They remind us that the
Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark
of the LORD’s Covenant went across.’ These
stones will stand as a memorial among the
people of Israel forever.”
44. 21 Then Joshua said to the Israelites, “In
the future your children will ask, ‘What do
these stones mean?’ 22 Then you can tell
them, ‘This is where the Israelites crossed
the Jordan on dry ground.’
45. 23 For the LORD your God dried up the river
right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until
you were all across, just as he did at the Red
Sea* when he dried it up until we had all
crossed over. 24 He did this so all the nations of
the earth might know that the LORD’s hand is
powerful, and so you might fear the LORD your
God forever.”
46. 4 Let each generation tell its children of your
mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. 5 I will
meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor
and your wonderful miracles. 6 Your awe-
inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will
proclaim your greatness. 7 Everyone will share
the story of your wonderful goodness; they will
sing with joy about your righteousness.
48. 7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the
word of God to you. Consider the outcome
of their way of life and imitate their faith.
49. 7 And the Israelites served the LORD
throughout the lifetime of Joshua10 After that
generation died, another generation grew up
who did not acknowledge the LORD or
remember the mighty things he had done for
Israel.
