All You Need to Know About Keywords!
Since the time SEO has emerged as a proper field, experts have agreed that the single most important
phenomena that has affect on the rankings and serps of a website are “Keywords”. The following pages
cover a complete in depth analysis on keywords and answers from some very basic to complex answers.
Knowing what keywords are and how they are significant is the first step in SEO.
What are Keywords?
Anyone who is even slightly related to Search Engine Optimization would have heard the term
“keywords”. It is the most emphasized factor while writing the content of a website or setting the Meta
tags and page titles. Keywords are basically the words that are expected to be entered by an average
internet user to search something, it is the job of the SEO team to identify such words and then use
them in their website content, page titles and elsewhere in an appropriate manner.
What is the use?
So how do keywords help? The answer is simple, search engines like Google, Yahoo! and AltaVista have
algorithms that are designed to display results when an entry is made. The results shown by these
search engines are based on content relevancy, however there is no means by which the content or the
page can be completely checked so algo’s are used to find specific keywords on that page related to the
search made. In this way search engine decides the relevancy of a particular page to that content.
According to a research majority of the internet surfers consider the top 3 – 5 results as the most
relevant ones and no matter how much your website is relevant to that search, if it is not on the top list
all is in vain. How to get on the first page? The answer is already known, KEYWORDS.
How to Select Keywords?
Selection of keywords is the most important thing, you should be very careful as to which keywords you
will be using in your text. There are numerous tools on the web that help in keyword analysis, but I
recommend that you list down the services that your website/company is providing and then search for
those services on the web. The entries that you make are the most accurate keywords for your work! All
you have to do is to become an average JOE and then list the queries you made for that particular
service, once done with this you can make use of any keyword analysis website like “Google Ad words”
or “Niche Bot Classic”, these websites improve your keywords and suggest new ones based on your
Once you have listed all these keywords you then check the market competition on them, this is done by
typing the keywords in the search engine (Google preferred) and then note down how many results
have been displayed against it. Larger numbers indicate that the keyword is highly competitive while
lower numbers indicate that the keyword is not searched for that often, it is very important to select
few but strong keywords.
Following are a few important terminologies, without knowing these you will have a hard time in
understanding the methods that I will later discuss.
It is the number of time a keyword appears on a page as compared to all the other words, the SEO
expert’s advice to maintain a keyword density of 1 – 3%.
Keyword stuffing is considered as an unethical practice, it means that your website content and other
tags such as “meta tag” have been heavily littered with keywords and can lead your website to a
It is the title displayed on the top of each page of your website; this title is made by using some sort of
combination of keywords.
This tag is used to describe your services/company in a few words; this information is displayed in the
search results along with your website name.
It is common practice to use a combination of two or more keywords to form what we call a “keyword
phrase”, this helps in forming correct and meaningful sentences.
It is one of the rough measures through which you can check the popularity of a link. Page rank has no
effect what so ever on the serps. It is just a method by which Google acknowledges that the web page
has some quality inbound links to it.
Search Engine Result Page is the listing of a page returned by a search engine against a user query.
Query is the search made by the user to find information.
Implementing Keywords – The proper way!
One thing that must be kept in mind at all times is that the website and the content on it are for
the users i.e. humans, you should be very careful that your web content looks written for users
and not for search engines. Keyword density is vital in the quality for maintain the quality of
your content, in fact it is the actual measuring element that creates a balance between the
content being keyword oriented and natural.
The keywords that you have selected should be scattered all along the website, if a few pages
of your website are heavily filled with keywords and few are empty of it then you have certainly
done a bad job and search engines may drop your page ranks. Of the selected keywords choose
the one that you plan to give attention the most and then make sure that particular word is
repeated the most.
As mentioned in my previous article, the title and description tag are very important. It is
generally suggested that you use as many keywords as possible in the tile but then again its
good practice that you form a proper sentence rather than just a mere combination of
keywords. I will explain this with the help of an example;
Title for a website that provides Facebook applications:
“Facebook Guru‐Facebook Application‐Widget‐Connect Developer‐Facebook‐Bebo‐Friendster
Applications Development‐Developers‐Services Company”
This is the worst possible case, looking at the title only creates a very negative impression, the
webmaster has “keyword stormed” the title and as a result it looks haphazard and sluggish.
Here is another title of a similar company:
“Facebook application developers – Gurus of Facebook application development”
Just by the look of it you get a complete overview of the website, the company is a Facebook application
development company and they claim to be the gurus of it. Note that although the first example had a
lot of keywords but the title did not made much sense, nor did it delivered a message and most
important of all it was not concentrating on a single (but strong) keyword.
Search Engine Optimization is an art and it is important for a websites growth to focus on the correct
keywords. We will be back soon with more and will be discussing Search Engine Optimization and
techniques to improve website traffic in our next part.
