INTRO:A student in Middle School in International School Manila would use the Middle School gym for PE class. Once they reached Grade 9, they would be using the High School gym for any PE classes for the rest of their schooling. Both gyms are notably far away from each other in terms of distance. As they are far apart from each other, they are also varied from any conveniences like the cafeteria and a student’s next classroom. Also, both gyms are different in size, with the Middle School gym being bigger than the High School gym, and brightness. We believe that the Middle School gym is preferred by the High School Students to the High School gym due to the size, brightness and location. Since the Middle School gym is near important places to students such as the cafeteria and the library. Unlike the High School gym, which is far away from said places but near majority of the classrooms used by the High School students and the Fine Arts area. To find out the preference of the High School students, we asked five people of each grade in High School and the PE teachers what gym they preferred and why they liked a certain gym with a table because it is the easiest way to organize our data. We chose this topic because the gyms are part of everyday life and it would be better to know for future reference for future PE classes.
14 people prefer the MS Gym over the HS, which means only 10 prefer the HS Gym and one person hasn't decided. Out of the four reasons we chose to question people about, the MS Gym Location seemed to have been the reason the most interviewed people chose. Out of the 14 who prefer the MS Gym, 6 said because of its location, 2 because of the equipment, 2 because of the MS Gym's brightness, 2 said that its size is larger than the HS gym's size and 2 who didn't give an answer with atleast one of the specified reasons.
Although the distance from the HS Gym to the pool may be more than four times the distance between the MS Gym and the pool, the HS Gym is 85m closer to the track than the MS Gym.
All of the 5 coaches that we questioned preferred the Middle School Gym. Because they think that it has a positive atmosphere, it’s much bigger, much brighter, closer to the ATAC (office), canteen and pool. The Seniors 3/5 preferred the High School Gym because its closer to their respective lockers, it’s bigger, and its closer to their classes. The other 2 seniors liked the Middle School Gym more because there is more equipment available and its closer to the canteen. But, on average the senior’s prefer the High School Gym. The junior’s prefer the Middle School Gym (3/5) because it’s closer to the their locker, the MS gym seems brighter, and because it’s close to the places that they go to most. The other 2 juniors felt that the High School Gym was better because the equipment is chosen according to our capability, and its equipment is made for us unlike the Middle School Gym. The sophomores prefer the Middle School Gym (also 3/5) because the MS Gym seems bigger, it’s much brighter and because the gymnastics area is close by. The other 2 students prefer the HS Gym because it’s situated in a good location, and because it’s closer to their lockers. Freshmen prefer the High School Gym (3/5) because it’s more spacious, it’s nicer compared to the MS gym and it has locker rooms. The other 2 freshmen said that they prefer the Middle School gym because its ‘cooler’ and it has the gymnastics and wall-climbing wall right next to it. When analyzing this data it is hard to understand why different grades have different likes. When we started this project our hypothesis was that the higher the grade level the more they will like the High School gym however it is apparent that the juniors prefer the Middle School gym better which is odd. The reason we think why the freshmen prefer the High School Gym is exclusivity, now that we have a new gym to go to; we feel proud of ourselves now that we are getting a little older. We also think that the reason why the Seniors like the high school gym more is because they find that they’ve grown accustomed to their gym and because all activities are done their, so they hardly go to the middle school gym. Overall, this was a very challenging topic to do a project on because of all the different aspects that had to be taken into account. If we were to do this project again, we would try to get the data much more quickly so that we have enough time to really develop the rest of the project.
How do spatial factors influence gym preference
ISM GYMS
By: Andrew, Zehn, Malen, Martin, and Bea
What is our project about?
Hypothesis: We believe the MS gym is preferred to the HS gym because of the size, brightness and location.
We wanted to know what people preferred: the MS or HS gym
Both gyms are far away from each other
The places people go to (canteen, library etc.) are closer depending on the gym
Why is this important?
Atmosphere is very important for one to feel comfortable in a certain place. Our aim is to find out in which gym HS students can really enjoy doing sports.
This can also help for future reference.
Number of people who chose each reason for preferring the MS Gym
Data collection methods:
Questioning: A simple question sheet was devised with the following question- ‘Do you prefer the MS Gym over the HS Gym; do you think that the brightness, location, size or quality of equipment of either gym has affected your choice?’
Measuring distances: We used a ‘meter-wheel’ to measure the width/length of both gyms and the distances from both gyms to landmarks.
Conclusion
Most coaches preferred the MS GYM
Most Freshmanspreferred the HS Gym
Most Sophomores preferred the MS Gym
Most Juniors preferred the MS Gym
Most Seniors preferred the HS Gym
Evaluation
Data was collected quite late; which lead to problems in terms of completing the project the best way we could.
Although only HS students (and 5 PE teachers) were interviewed since they’ve experienced both Gyms; it would be a fairer test and less biased if a few Ms students were interviewed.
Would’ve been better to have more distances from Gyms to certain landmarks in order to have more quantitive data to compare with.
