Work with what you have. Bring out the best in it. Got crap? How could it be better? Got something great? Make some sound! Don’t design a site around big images if there are no good images.

Design sells the content to the user / customer, pay attention to details, create a continuum. Take fashion design, the clothes are the content. They tell a story, they communicate values and priorities. Put clothes on, you’re the content of the clothes. What kind of story are you telling? Choose wisely.
On the web people don’t come to look at a great design. They come to look at great content. Design should not be in the way of content. It should drive users straight to said content, take good care of them while they visit, and have them coming back again. Also, on the web we don’t live in a vacuum. Design is not done when the site is. You keep improving even if you know you’re the only one to “notice”.
