ABB's brake motors are standard motors modified for
braking duties, i.e. three phase induction motors with standard
dimensions and output rating. The electromagnetic disc brake is
powered, either DC or three phase AC current, from a rectifier
located in the motor terminal box.

Types of Braking
Brakes are used to reduce or cease the speed of motors.
We know that there are various types of motors available(DC
motors, induction motors, synchronous motors, single phase
motors etc.) and the specialty and properties of these motors
are different from each other, hence this braking methods
also differs from each other. But we can divide braking in to
three parts mainly, which are applicable for almost every type
Plugging type braking.
Single and 3-phase ac motors are generally available in ½ to 30 hp
capacities for use in brake motors. Other versions include
customized ac and dc motors up to 500 hp. Specific motor types
include totally-enclosed, fan-cooled (TEFC) with and without C-
face; open drip proof with and without C-face; and explosionproof
with C-face or foot mount.
Brakes and motors are combined into a brake motor package
mainly for user convenience. Because the two components are
directly coupled, the package is smaller and has fewer parts (no
shaft coupling), which reduces the chance for error.
The user doesn’t need to separately mount the components, align
the brake (important for brake function) or install separate wiring to
operate the brake.
Brake motor is totally enclosed fan cooled squirrel cage with
additional disk type DC brake 3-phase asynchronous motor, DC
disc brake for braking motor installed in the non motor shaft
extension end of the end cover. When the brake motor access
power, the brake motor also works simultaneously. Due to the role
of the electromagnetic suction electromagnet attracts the armature
and the compression spring, brake disc on the armature end cover
disengaged, brake motors started the operation. When the power
supply is cut off, and motor braking electromagnet lose magnetic
suction spring to push the armature to compress the brake disk, in
under the action of friction torque and motor brake immediately
stop running; our factory also produce corresponding double
speed (speed, far pole ratio) motor.
