Cell Phone Radiation

 1. 1. Cell Phone Radiation
It’s real
Electromagnetic radiation from mobile phone near ear-skull region. Computer and Communication Engineering (ICCCE), 2010 International Conference on
2. 2. Disconnect
This is the book I read in the bookstore. I couldn’t put it down. It’s an argument about how cell phone radiation has led to cancer.
3. 3. Dr. Davis
This is the Author. She’s not a lunatic.B.S. in physiological psychology and a M.A. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh, 1967.
She completed a Ph.D. in science studies at the University of Chicago as a Danforth Foundation Graduate Fellow, 1972
M.P.H. in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University as a Senior National Cancer Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow, 1982.
She has also authored more than 190 publications in books and journals ranging from the Lancet and Journal of the American Medical Association to Scientific American and the New York Times and blogs in Freakonomics for the New York Times, Huffington Post and elsewhere.
4. 4. Radio Frequency
2.45Ghz are microwave ovens
Larger industrial microwave ovens are at 915MHz
Cell phones: 850MHz – 1.9GHz
Turn the power up they will vibrate atoms faster.
The more power you turn up a microwave, the more intense it vibrates water molecules, thus friction occurs in matter with water and it heats up. Cell phones do not have enough power to heat us up like microwaves…but they operate at the same frequencies.
5. 5. Cell Phones Don’t Heat Us Up
They break down DNA
A cell after exposure to normal cell phone radiation, showing places where the cell was damaged.
The blood brain barrier is designed to prevent anomalies in the bloodstream from reaching our brain.
6. 6. Research
Blood Brain Barrier which protects our brain from anomalies in the blood stream breaks down, leaving our brain open to anomalies.
Cause is that DNA double helix becomes damaged/ripped apart. Healthier cells recover quicker. But long term exposure could increase risk of cancer.
7. 7. More Research
Cell phones are proven to make sperm sluggish.
Not recommended for Birth Control
Sailors on WWII ships used to stand in front of the radar beams on ships to stay warm. They also noticed that they became some what infertile for shore leave.
But sperm hit with normal cell phone radiation does become slow and almost defunct.
8. 8. Good News
Cell Phones have been attributed to preventing Alzheimer's in rats normally genetically predisposed to Alzheimer's…
But notice why:
Because cell phone radiation prevents a specific protein known to be associated with Alzheimer's from growing in the brain…something is happening in there to kill these proteins.
9. 9. I’m Not Here To Scare You
10. 10. …But What Is Scary
France, Sweden, Israel
All have bans on advertisements for cell phones to kids.
Some places in Europe are not allowed to sell cell phones to children under 16.
11. 11. SAR
The Specific Absorption Rate is a measure of the amount of radio frequency (RF) energy absorbed by the body when using the handset. All cell phones emit RF energy and the SAR varies by handset model.
To sell a cell phone in the US, you must be under an SAR value of:
1.6 watts/kg
In Europe it’s: 2.0 watts/kg
The point is that YOU NEED TO BE UNDER 1.6 in order to be a cell phone in the United States. Be sure to read the highlighted text in the next slides VERY carefully.
12. 12. …Even More Scary
From iPhone 4 Operations and Safety Manual
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_4_Important_Product_Information_Guide.pdf
13. 13. …Even More Scary
From iPhone 4 Operations and Safety Manual
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_4_Important_Product_Information_Guide.pdf
14. 14. …Even More Scary
From iPhone 4 Operations and Safety Manual
But notice this footnote…
Everything looks good, it’s all under 1.6
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_4_Important_Product_Information_Guide.pdf
15. 15. …Even More Scary
From iPhone 4 Operations and Safety Manual
Here’s the footnote to those numbers.
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_4_Important_Product_Information_Guide.pdf
16. 16. Which means…
That there is a loop hole.
All the SAR numbers were recorded AT a position OFF of the body.
The manual explicitly states: the limit may be exceeded if it’s on your body. (read the entire previous slide again.)
17. 17. …Blackberry? Try BlackScary
From Blackberry SIB-8300 Series Safety Manual
Notice where they put this. Under a section titled: Holster
What the frick is this all about? Why isn’t it under a section titled: FCC SAR Warning
http://docs.blackberry.com/en/smartphone_users/deliverables/5451/SIB_8300_series_169506_11.pdf
18. 18. What does this mean?
Something is up. It’s the same story as with cigarettes. It took 6 years to get the surgeon generals warning out, AFTER doctors raised an issue about cigarettes on health. How long were cigarettes around before 1964?
The 1964 report on smoking and health had an impact on public attitudes and policy. A Gallup Survey conducted in 1958 found that only 44 percent of Americans believed smoking caused cancer, while 78 percent believed so by 1968. In the course of a decade, it had become common knowledge that smoking damaged health, and mounting evidence of health risks gave Terry's 1964 report public resonance. Yet, while the report proclaimed that "cigarette smoking is a health hazard of sufficient importance in the United States to warrant appropriate remedial action," it remained silent on concrete remedies. That challenge fell to politicians. In 1965, Congress required all cigarette packages distributed in the United States to carry a health warning, and since 1970 this warning is made in the name of the Surgeon General. In 1969, cigarette advertising on television and radio was banned, effective September 1970.
19. 19. Do cell phones cause brain cancer?
There is an increased risk of tumors/cancer for long amounts of cell phone long cell phone usage (1-hr) long conversations.
Biological studies in rats. Risk increases.
Risk is tripled in children and teenagers.
Even a former Motorola engineer who worked on development of first portable cell phone (1983), found a brain tumor in him in 2002.
20. 20. Let’s be realistic
I’m not saying EVERY cell phone user will develop cancer/tumors.
But…your risk INCREASES.
21. 21. Crazy?
Louis Pasteur 1859
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek 1676
Back in their days imagine scientists running around saying: “There are thousands/millions of invisible things all over you! And they may kill you!”
Well yeah, they’re called germs. But we don’t stop going outside…
WE WASH OUR HANDS
22. 22. Wash Your Hands Digitally
Don’t sleep with it under your pillow.
Keep it away from your body (book bag front pocket).
Don’t put it in your bra.
Put keys facing you if in pocket. (antenna’s on back)
Keep conversations short.
Text more often.
Use wired ear piece. Or BlueTooth (but turn off when not in use).
DO NOT let kids use cell phones. +18
23. 23. But what about bluetooth?
I use a Protronice blue tooth. The SAR is .0317
My cell phone is a blackjack II it has a .987 SAR
Do the math: .0317/.987 = .032
My blue tooth produces only 3.2% the radiation my cell phone produces. (Imagine a gallon of water, and you only drink 4 ounces. [1/2 cup])
I can keep the phone far away, and the blue tooth near. But keep calls short.
24. 24. MORE RADIATION
LESS RADIATION
Traveling fast or with small signal, produces more radiation.
Standing still, or with full signal, produces less radiation.
25. 25. References
http://www.disconnectbook.com/
library.gatech.edu (Research Journal Database)
Google. Read Articles.
26. 26. The number of mobile phone subscriptions worldwide has reached 4.6 billion and is expected to increase to five billion this year.
Questions?
San Francisco voted 10-1 this year to give approval to the ordinance, which would require stores to provide each phone's "specific absorption rate" – a measure of radiation registered with the Federal Communications Commission.
