  2. 2. 3© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project Preface The fight against and for water… We learned it as a child: water is the source of life! However, water availability has become a global key issue nowadays, being severely threatened by global changes, including a strong po-pulation growth, increasing water usage, intensive agriculture, deforestation, urbanization and climate changes. Our planet’s climate shows rising temperatures and resulting changing precipi-tation patterns. According to experts extreme events like droughts, floods and water scarcity will become more frequent and intense. The warming trend is found to be greatest at mountains and at the poles, exactly the areas with a very vulnerable eco-system. A shift to higher snowmelt, less snowfall higher up and more intense rain fall at lower altitudes has been detected in several mountain areas. It increases the amount of directly available water, while decreasing the amount of long-term storage (snow and ice). Experts foresee situations in which the water storage capacity gets easily saturated. Lake outbursts, land- slides, rock avalanches and river bank breaks are likely to occur more regularly in future years, resulting in a whole set of further threats in mountains as well as areas downstream. Other moun- tain regions may suffer more from drying up ‘only’. Adaptation strategy planning is ongoing; one of the promising solutions being water capture and storage. Implementation can be very challenging, mainly because of geographical complexity. Nevertheless it’s key to fight against and for water. Let’s climb for water, together! As trekkers and climbers, we have seen water related problems in mountain areas ourselves. We believe that all mountain lovers, the trekking and climbing community especially, could and should help mountain areas and local communities in their struggle for water. Our treks and expeditions are used to spread awareness about these water problems and to raise funds to support local water projects. We believe that everybody in this world has the right to sufficient, clean and safe drinking water and sustainable water facilities. That’s why we climb for water! We strongly invite you to join us in our mission! This sponsor proposal explains to you the principles of our ‘7 Summits for Water’ project. We hope it will be the stepping stone to an inspiring, fruitful and effective project that supports water projects around the world. As Ghandi said: ” The future depends on what we do in present”. So, let’s make a difference, let’s climb for water; together! Eveline Wessels Chairman - Climbing for Water Foundation

  6. 6. 7© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project 1 - Project: 7 Summits for Water Climbing 7 summits 7 Summits for Water is a unique project to spread awareness and to raise funds for specific water projects around the world. It includes a series of easy to very difficult climbing expeditions to the so called ‘7 summits’; the famous list of mountains that refer to the seven highest mountains on each of our planet’s continents: The mountaineering challenge to climb the 7Summits is traditionally based on either the Bass or the Messner list, named after the two first mountaineers who completed this challenge in 1980 and 1986. The Messner list is the most technical one, replacing Australia’s easy Mount Kosciuszko with the challenging Carstensz Pyramid. In 2010 about 275 people have climbed the 7 summits following the Bass list or Messner list. For this project we have decided to follow the Messner list!
  7. 7. 8© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project The concept Climbing the 7 summits in 7 expeditions The project consists of 1 kick-off event and 7 climbing expeditions to the highest mountain of each of our 7 continents. The final expedition will be to the World’s highest mountain: Everest. A perfect setting for a special event and worthy closure of this unique project! 7 Awareness campaigns & fundraising € 500.000,- During all expeditions we will organize specific awareness campaigns about water related problems worldwide and in the target area specifically. One goal is to fix a huge15x15 banner on all of the seven summits, a serious challenge at high altitude! However, without money there will be no solutions. That’s why we have set our target to raise at least € 500.000,- for water projects to support local communities in their fight for and against water; In mountain areas and areas downstream. The supported water projects will be chosen 1 year to 6 months prior to every expedition and will be selected with support from AKVO and AQUA4ALL, two foundations that are specialized and very experienced in selecting and monitoring water projects around the world. More information at: www.akvo.org / www.aqua4all.nl The core & project team For this project we have decided to work in a small core team with two permanent members. The core team will manage the entire project and will also run the expeditions during the time span of 5- 6 years. The climbing team will be formed by the climbers from the core team which will be supported by a Climbing for Water project team with all kind of organizational tasks. To guarantee the continuity of the project, the climbers from the project team may replace the core members during a certain expedition. Are you a climber or trekker? Join us! Climbing for Water stimulates other climbers and trekkers to continue their outdoor activities, but from now, in favor of water! That’s why individual climbers are invited to join one or more expeditions of the 7 Summits for Water project. Besides that, climbers and trekkers can order a ‘Climbing for Water promo pack’ with different kind of promotional items that help to spread awareness and to raise funds for water projects. 7 Summits for Water; the movie! For this project we’re searching for a cooperation with a professional film production company to shoot a documentary of each expedition. Although we have some very interesting ideas how the project and its sponsors could benefit from this extension, we can only activate this idea if we manage to find additional (media) partners and sponsors. Of course, we would love to discuss this in further detail with you!
  8. 8. 9© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project Project goals This brings us to describe three main goals: Goal 3 - Fundraising € 500.000,- to support water projects Last but not least, the project’s final goal is to raise funds for local water projects. Our target is to raise at least € 500.000,- . This amount equals the total cost that is budgeted for this entire project. All funds are to be raised by donations, gifts and sales of a variety of attractive sponsor packages to companies and individuals. Goal 2 - Awareness campaigns addressing water problems The project’s second goal is to raise (more) awareness about global water problems. This is to be done partly through (free) publicity on websites, news papers and magazines, and partly through presentations, posters, brochures, stickers, etc. Besides these general means we will organize a specific awareness campaign during every climbing expedition. Medium sized banners of 1m x 1.5m will be placed in all base camps and at the climbing route, finishing with a huge sized banner of 15m x 15m at the summit of each mountain! Goal 1 - Organizing climbing expeditions to the 7 summits The project’s first goal is to climb all mountains that belong to the ‘seven summits’ according to the ‘Messner list’. In total, there will be organized 1 kick-off and 7 expeditions: Kilimanjaro - Aconcagua - Carstensz Pyramid - Elbrus - Vinson - McKinley – ending with Everest. The core expedition team consists of two climbers who will be the driving force behind all expeditions and the project in general. The core team is backed up by a Climbing for Water project team.
  9. 9. 10© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project The people behind the project Core team Eveline Wessels [ Nationality: Dutch / Age: 30 / Project leader / climber ] As a nutrition scientist, Eveline’s interest in sports, trekking, climbing, cultures and food related problems led her to mountain regions in Asia, Europe and Africa. During her treks and expeditions she became aware of the alarming scope of global water problems. Now she’s one of the founders of the Climbing for Water foundation and a dedicated, driven and climbing chairman. Armand Dirks [ Nationality: Dutch / Age: 42 / Marketing / climber ] When Armand graduated as sports economist, his love for nature made him decide to setup an outdoor company and to work as a trekking and mountain guide in the Himalayas. His deep interest for wild nature and its preservation finally led him to Climbing for Water, the idea to combine his experience with preservation and sustainable support of local mountain communities. Project team Frank van Hulst [ Nationality: Dutch / Age: 43 / Fundraiser / climber ] Frank is an experienced physiotherapist, acupuncturist, sportsman and adventurer. His passion for sports, nature and different cultures has led him to many corners of the world. Running, cycling, & mountaineering are his favorites. Frank joined Climbing for Water from the start, using his network to spread awareness and to raise funds. Celia Schmitz [ Nationality: Dutch / Age: 38 / Accountant ] As an experienced skier and financial auditor, Celia is an important person within Climbing for Water. Her passion for mountain sports has brought her to many different mountain areas in Europe, making her aware of the wide spread problems of climate change. This made her decide to support the Climbing for Water foundation with her business and financial skills and experience. Namgyal Sherpa [ Nationality: Nepalese / Age: 32 / Organizer / climber ] Namgyal is an very experienced climber and mountain manager. He has climbed several 8000m peaks, including Mt Everest 7 times. Namgyal has been the driving force behind a large and risky clean up expedition in spring 2010, supporting Climbing for Water during its first Everest Awareness Campaign. A strong climber with real passion to use his experience to preserve mountain areas.

  17. 17. 18© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project
  18. 18. 19© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project 3 - Climbing for Water foundation Why water? No Water, No Life...! There is nothing more important than water. Without water there is no life... Water is essential for every organism to live and grow. We need water to drink and cook, to produce food, to generate electricity and to maintain proper hygiene. There’s no substitute for water! Of all water, 2,5% is drinkable Of all the available water on earth, 97.5% is salty, undrinkable water. Not just for us human beings, but for most animals and plants as well. Drinkable water is becoming scarcer for the 6 to 7 billion people on our planet. We have to take care of water resources and protect them wherever we can. Water is a key issue Mountains store massive volumes of fresh water in wetlands, lakes, water aquifers, snowfields and glaciers. However, snowfields and glaciers have been melting and retreating at a rapid pace during the last decades in mountain ranges all over the world. On top of that, obvious changes in rain- & snowfall patterns are seen. Both changes are causing different kinds of new problems in mountain areas. The key issue is water, it has become a struggle against and for water; disastrous floods, droughts and critical water shortages lay ahead for millions of people in mountain areas and people living downstream.
  19. 19. 20© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project Why Climbing? Mountains; source of wonder and inspiration Mountains have been a source of wonder and inspiration already for a very long time. Venturing into mountains means entering wild and untouched nature of an extreme beauty. Trekkers and climbers are fascinated by a mountain's remoteness, its inaccessibility and its purity. Climbing requires physical, intellectual and psychological commitment; it offers the greatest rewards and unforgettable experiences. Mountains are natural 'Water Towers' Besides serving as a source of wonder and inspiration, mountains are an important (drinking) water source for the majority of the world's population. Mountains block clouds and store precipitation in high altitude wetlands, lakes, water aquifers, snowfields and glaciers. Mountains therefore are called the world’s natural ‘Water Towers'. In some areas mountains provide as much as 80% of people’s fresh water needs! While these important water towers serve as a challenging play ground for trekkers and climbers, billions of people rely on mountains for their basic water needs. In fact, we play on water! If we enjoy mountains that much, why not help by doing what we love to do? Climbing, for Water!
  20. 20. 21© Climbing for Water Foundation 2010 - 7 Summits for Water Project Who are we? Climbing for Water is a foundation established and operated by trekkers and climbers. All of us have seen and recognized the impacts of climate change and population growth within mountain areas and areas downstream. It made us decide to help by doing what we love to do! Visit our website for more background information about the people behind the foundation. Our vision, mission & values Our activities 1 - Treks, climbing expeditions & events We believe that climbing expeditions and treks are great platforms to gain media attention, to spread awareness and to raise funds. One of our major projects is the ‘7 summits for Water’ project, which is described in this document. Additional events may be organized as well; ideas are there! 2 - Awareness Campaigns To make people more aware of water problems and the effects of climate changes in general (and in mountain areas specifically), we organize awareness campaigns. An awareness campaign is always part of our treks and expeditions, although it can be organized as a standalone event as well. Think of: exhibitions, presentations, etc! 3 - Fund Raising To finance solutions for water problems, we depend on gifts and donations. Fundraising campaigns are always part of our events. Vision A world where all populations have access to sufficient, safe and clean drinking water and sustainable water facilities. Mission Our mission is to realize safe, clean and sufficient drinking water all over the world and therefore required sustainable water facilities, by supporting water projects and related initiatives of (inter)national organizations. Values Sustainable, Honest, Inspirational, Committed
