1. 1. IDENTITIES
2. 2. How do we create an Identity?
Avowal – occurs when we decide what constitutes our identity. We have a picture of who we think we are and try to become that. I picture myself as an active person who loves to do extreme sports. So I make sure I stay active in extreme sports.
3. 3. How do we create an identity?
Ascription – This occurs when people tell you what you should be. This is when they expect you to be a certain way that they see in you. If your actions are not what is expected, confusion will occur. They will assign some quality or a character to you
Two different types of ascription
Reactive
This is when someone is personally assuming an identity because of a role you have.
Example-Because I'm a fire fighter I'm expected to look like one with a crew cut hair cut and a mustache. I don’t look the part at all
Proactive
This is when someone has assigned an identity, or pushes an identity by others based on what they expect from the role you have.
5. 5.
