  3. 3. the solution of choice Orthoplast is a multi-layer waterproofing/surface course complex for engineering structures with metal decks - especially bridges with orthotropic slabs. Waterproofing is provided by a highly modified bitumen membrane or an Orthoplast H prefabricated bituminous sheet; the surface course is made up of an asphaltic concrete designed with a binder from the Eurovia range. The membrane and the surface course are laid at high speed using mechanised road equipment, so that work can be accelerated and the paved structure rapidly re-opened. Orthoplast confirms the expertise of Eurovia’s specialised engineering structure waterproofing teams. It is an effective, rapidly implemented and durable solution for all structures with metal decks. universally proven reliability Orthoplast has been in use for nearly 40 years. The product, with its high technological value added, was developed with substantial input (equipment, experts, etc.) from Eurovia RD. Given the powerful and high-speed equipment used to lay it, the technique is suitable for large structures. The process has been used on major bridges with metal decks in France and abroad: Caronte Viaduct, which carries the A 55 motorway over the canal as it enters Lake Berre in Martigue, Saint-Brévin - Saint-Nazaire bridge over the Loire estuary, Normandy bridge between Le Havre and Honfleur over the Seine estuary, Europe bridge over the Loire in Orléans, Mathilde bridge in Rouen, Champlain and Honoré Mercier bridges in Quebec, Grande Ravine viaduct on Reunion Island.
  4. 4. ONE-OF-A-KIND strength Orthoplast is one of the few complexes to have withstood without damage the inverse bending fatigue test under the LCPC test protocol. The test, which is very severe, consists in subjecting a sample of the complex applied to a 12mm thick metal plate to dynamic sinusoidal loadings that simulate the bending under negative moment caused by the passage of heavy vehicles. a high performance process Orthoplast is applied after painstaking preparation of the sheet metal substrate: careful cleaning, stripping of the deck and the vertical edges by grit blasting, sweeping and vacuuming of the residue from this treatment, immediate application of a tack varnish to prevent corrosion. The waterproofing membrane consists of a layer of approximately 3kg/m2 of Polybitume® PA, a highly modified bitumen from the Eurovia range. It is applied by a bitumen sprayer specially equipped to spread a viscous binder at high temperatures (200°C). This machine also waterproofs the edges by means of oblique nozzles. Specific points - gullies, joints, barrier supports - are treated separately in accordance with their geometry. The waterproofing is then covered with a light chipping of agglomerated slate to protect the membrane from the machines used to lay the asphaltic concrete. A recent alternative version of the Orthoplast process offers a Hydroplast waterproofing sheet – also covered by a French Technical Opinion - in lieu of the membrane. In both cases, the surface course is made up of at least 60mm of semi-coarse 0/10mm or 0/14mm asphaltic concrete designed with a highly polymer modified binder, which is applied with conventional road construction equipment. The performance of the complex is essentially the result of the high quality materials used, especially the binders. Orthoplast adheres perfectly to the metal and withstands strong deformations across a wide range of use temperatures without risk of rutting. The Orthoplast process is patented; a French Technical Opinion was issued for it in March 2000 and renewed in May 2005.
