Women are still under-represented in STEM occupations and studies, and that is why STEM Alliance and Scientix put gender equality in STEM under the spotlight in a special webinar that took place during STEM Discovery Week 2018. This webinar, featuring top company representatives, aimed to raise the awareness of teachers and policy makers about what schemes companies are offering to help get girls into STEM careers.

  31. 31. © 2018 IBM Corporation “This partnership allows more and more students to have the opportunity to be challenged by the world of Science, Technology and Mathematics in a practical and business context.”- Directorate General of Education “For our students that participated in EX.I.T.E., a window of knowledge was opened and that potentially will define their academic and professional paths. We strongly thanks to IBM the excellence of this project that by its impressive results encourages us to seek other such challenges to join.” – School director “There is no difference between girls and boys regarding their capabilities in STEM, but there still is a difference in the amount of exposure that young girls have to STEM. Gender stereotypes often hinder girls from sharing the same experiences as boys therefore prohibiting them from reaching their full potential in STEM and other disciplines that are traditionally thought of as for “boys”. IBM’s EX.I.T.E camp is great way to introduce young women to STEM and build their self-confidence thus encouraging them to participate even more in STEM.” – Former Ambassadress of the United States of America in Portugal “In our opinion, EX.I.T.E. Camp is an excellent initiative that annually encourages around 30 girls to the interests in areas of engineering and information technologies. We think that the EX.I.T.E. Camp is a great opportunity that should be maximized by all the girls and is very enriching and fun because it gives us useful knowledge for the future, whether we follow the areas of engineering or not, in an interesting, competitive, and innovative way. We consider this experience unique for the participants as well as for the volunteers who accompany us and help out in each activity with a smile from ear to ear. With this project we acquire technical and social knowledge, as we have the opportunity to make new friendships that last for life.” – Participating students Some testemonies
