OS16 - 3.2.f Surveillance of FMD in Georgia - M. Donduashvili

  1. 1. Open Session of the EuFMD - Cascais –Portugal 26-28 October 2016 Surveillance of Foot and Mouth Disease in Georgia Marina Donduashvili Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Tbilisi, Georgia
  2. 2. Introduction • FMD is a transboundary disease; surveillance is important for Georgia and its neighboring countries who import and export animals. • Georgia is actively involved in FMD eradication programs to achieve disease free status by 2020. • This study reviews the data from FMDV testing at LMA during 2014-2016.
  3. 3. OS16 Methods • Testing at LMA for FMD virus is conducted using a test algorithm provided (World Organization for Animal Health/OIE). • LMA receives serum samples: • Farmers • Business operators who import/export animals • Serological testing-detection of non-structural proteins of FMDV using PrioCHECK® FMDV NS kit. • Molecular biology techniques to identify viral nucleic acids. Figure 1. FMDV NS testing: assay preparation using PrioCHECK® FMDV NS (A), and results(B).
  4. 4. OS16 Results • Results were entered into Electronic Integration Disease Surveillance System (EIDSS). • In 2016 (January – June), 2,040 samples were collected at regional laboratories across Georgia: • 67 (3.3%) were FMDV positive • NFA plans to continue testing throughout the year. Table 1. ELISA positive (POS) results for FMDV from 2014-2016.
  5. 5. OS16 Discussion • Serological test results show the presence of antibodies to FMD virus; this data suggests that FMD is still circulating in Georgia. • According to the overall data, there is a downward trend on the incidence of FMD. • Continuing FMD surveillance is important to Georgia: • Increases in the export of animals from Georgia to other countries • The enrollment of the country in PCP activities
