OS16 - 3.1.i Epidemiology of FMD in Georgia - Z. Rukhadze

  1. 1. Open Session of the EuFMD - Cascais –Portugal 26-28 October 2016
  2. 2. •  Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is endemic in Georgia. •  The last reported outbreak of FMD was in caJle in 2002. •  Results of FMD virus sero-surveys indicate that the virus is sNll circulaNng in Georgia. •  NFA conducts: –  Passive surveillance –  NSP surveillance –  Biannual blanket vaccinaNon for large and small ruminants –  Post vaccinaNon SP survey
  3. 3. •  In 2015 - 2,438,051 animals were vaccinated –  1,521,932 large ruminants (LR) and 916,119 small ruminants (SR) •  In 2016 - 1,639,404 animals were vaccinated –  765,145 LR and 874,259 SR •  EsNmated vaccinaNon coverage for both groups were > 80% •  NSP Sero-survey was conducted in order to idenNfy virus circulaNon Figure 1. Total ruminants vaccinated against FMD from 2012 - spring 2016
  4. 4. •  Sero-survey results from samples collected from: •  Large ruminants: About 13.8% FMD posiNve •  Small ruminants: About 15.2% FMD posiNve Figure 2. Sero-survey results from samples collected between 2015-2016: large ruminants (A) 13.8% FMDV PosiNve, and n= 1,455; small ruminants (B) 15.5% FMDV posiNve, and n= 1,809.
  5. 5. •  Due to animal vaccinaNon, there have been no reported FMD outbreaks in Georgia. •  In the event of an outbreak of FMD, rapid spread of the disease could occur among a large populaNon of suscepNble animals. •  This informaNon will be used for developing next year’s risk based vaccinaNon plan and to monitor FMD in Georgia.
