OS16 - 3.1.g Current State of FMD Surveillance in Senegal - M. Moustapha

  1. 1. CURRENT STATE OF FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE SURVEILLANCE IN SENEGAL Lo MM1; Seck Ismaila2, Diop Mariame1; Sall Baba2; Seck MT1 and Lo Mb2 1 LaboratoireNational D’Elevage et de Recherches Vétérinaires 2 Direction des Services vétérinaires
  2. 2. INTRODUCTION  Until year 2013 Gap in our knowledge concerning FMD virus strains circulating in Africa  According to EuFMD December 2013 report Only four serotypes circulating in SENEGAL : A, O, SAT1, SAT2  Availability of Financial support to conduct survey to estimate the prevalence of three diseases: RVF, CBPP and FMD. The 2016 EuFMD Open Session, held on October 26-28 in Cascais, Portugal 2
  3. 3. Materials and Methods  1735 bovine sera collected from cattle in fourteen regions Kit FMDV Ab detection  For the group Elisa for intro detection Ab (PrioCHECK FMD NS)  Elisa serotyping of FMDV O,A and SAT2(IZSLER:Brescia,Italy The 2016 EuFMD Open Session, held on October 26-28 in Cascais, Portugal 3
  4. 4. Results  473 samples were FMD group positive  367 are known serotypes  106 not yet serotyped  South more infected by SAT2  Central and western parts of country more infected by O and A  Kedougou near Guinea not infected with any serotypes The 2016 EuFMD Open Session, held on October 26-28 in Cascais, Portugal 4
  5. 5. The 2016 EuFMD Open Session, held on October 26-28 in Cascais, Portugal 5 Discussions and Perspectives  More research necessary to better understand molecular epidemiology of FMD and the impact of transhumance.  We plan to serotype all FMD positive groups and identify other potential serotypes circulating via transboundary trade and transhumance  Test hypothesis that links spreading disease to susceptible animal movement  Test viral population for genetic characterization and selection of vaccine candidates  Develop tools allowing detection of circulating strains  Propose control strategy at the regional level based on virology and epidemiology study results.
