2. What does it take to have a successful career in
UX?
We surveyed current UX professionals to find out! Here are
their words of advice.
3. “UX process isn't something ‘static’. It's
iterative and it tries to understand the
needs (or desires) of humans. It's all about
stay curious and try: try better, try harder. It
isn't only a few sketches or some flows. It's
understanding process and failure is only a
way to eliminate some possible ways to do
things. So don't be scared about that.”
Franceska Dalsaso
@FDalsaso
4. “Always do user research. Too often
designers think they have enough insight
when starting a project and they jump right
to wire-framing or mockups focusing on
visual design.”
Erik Wesslen
@erikwesslen
6. “Don't worry about coding, because the
technology changes too fast for you to get
really good at it. Instead, get a good
conceptual grasp of what is involved, build
a working vocabulary, and then learn how
to work with people who do write code and
love doing that.”
Karl Fast

7. “Get experience working with a vast
diversity of stakeholders and peers.
Communication is critical. This job is 80%
culture, 20% product, and if you think
otherwise, you're wrong.”
Tim Leisio
@timleisio
8. “When considering UX always put yourself
in the shoes of the user. Keep in mind that
some of your pet peeves in design could
resonate with them, so incorporate that in
your work.”
Rachel

9. “Steep yourself in content and media
related to your medium, but don't be afraid
to try new things.”
Gabriel Martin
@gabrielmtn
10. “Remain relentlessly focused on the
person you are designing for. Challenge
conventional wisdom at every chance you
get - assumptions and received wisdom
will fail you almost every time.”
Linda Matthews
@LindainSF
11. “Make things. Use canvas, clay, code, or
whatever medium speaks to you. Sweat
the details of building a thing and bringing
it into the world. Then use it and ask
yourself how it could be better. Ask other
people to use it and how it could be made
better for them. Listen to their responses.
Repeat.”
Ken Soliva

“Its all about the user. Learn about design
principles and how to interview people.
Understanding the user and what they
want to accomplish is the starting point,
from there its all about communicating
your understanding as best you can.”
