  2. 2. BERI-BERI Known as taon a leading cause of infant mortality in Asia and the Philippines A Food Deficiency disease afflicting people whose staple is over-milled or polished rice Identified that there is a relationship with thiamine structure
  3. 3. BERI-BERI The first autopsy of infantile beri beri was performed initiated by Dr Jose Albert Gov Gen Cameron Forbes issued an executive order forbidding the use of polished rice in government institutions Beri beri practically disappeared The giving of tiki-tiki a fluid extract from rice bran to babies was initiated There is a significnt drop in the beri beri incidence!

TUBERCULOSIS TB mortality rate per 100000 population was 483 .6 in Manila and 216 .2 in the provinces • Tuberculosi s is now the leading cause of death in the Philippines It was the cause of one- sixth of the deaths in Manila The Philippine Tuberculosis Society was formed to conduct a nationwide campaign against the disease July 29 1910
  6. 6. Other Infectious Diseases Control measures for These diseases were also given emphasis A Pasteur Prophylactic Treatment Clinic against rabies were opened Yearly anti-typhoid vaccines were instituted in school sand centers

SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES 1902- Act No 593created a Board of Dental Examiners Education and Licences • 1912- The First Dental School ( Collegio Dental del Liceo de Manila) was established by Dr Gregorio Mateo 1915- Followed by the establishment of Philippine School of Dentistry • 1925- Dental Colleges of the National University
  9. 9. SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES 1925- Centro Escolar University • 1929- Manila College of Dentistry 1948- College of Dentistry of the University of the East • 1953- Philippine College of Dental Medicine of the University of San Agustin 1947- College of Dentistry Iloilo City
  10. 10. NURSING Act No 1931 in 1909 – Placed Nursing Schools under the Bureau of Education
  11. 11. NURSING June 27 1907- The first 16 nursing students were admitted to the Philippine Normal School where preparatory nursing classes were given
  12. 12. NURSING While practical instruction was given in the Old Civil School and transferred in PGH in 1915 and larer called the PGH School of Nursing
  13. 13. NUMBER OF PHYSICIANS AND A THIRD MEDICAL SCHOOL
  14. 14. Number of Filipino physicians by 1924 and 1934 grew by 84% but few doctors went to the barrios • 80% of deaths were caused by lack of medical attention • The Philippine Medical Association proposed the establishment of charity clinics in all rural areas
  15. 15. A third medical School the Afable Medical College was established in 1938 shortly before World War II by Dr Valentin Afable
