  1. 1. What is film tourism ? Film tourism describes the effects that film and TV-productions can have on our travel decisions as they inspire people to experience the screened places . Not only is film tourism an excellent vehicle for Destination marketing , it also presents new product development opportunities ,such as location tours, Film museums , exhibitions and the theme of existing tourist attractions with a film connection.

Role powerful tool for the development and promotion of destinations Several destinations have gained in terms of tourist influx by being the venue / location of popular domestic and international cinema. In addition to the exposure provided through such films, there are many ancillary gains to the destination like income generation, investment, job creation etc. which contribute to the overall economic development of the respective destination.

Govt. initiative and plans to promote Film Tourism The Ministry of Tourism has recognized films as powerful tool for the development and promotion of destinations under Niche Tourism Product. Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in 2012; Joint participation with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Cannes Film Festival and Market, International Film Festival of India (IFFI, Goa), and European Film Market, Berlin; Institution of a National Tourism Award in 2012 in the category “Most Film Promotion Friendly State/UT” to encourage the State Governments and Union Territories to facilitate filming in their region; The Ministry of Tourism has formulated guidelines for extending financial support to State Governments/Union Territory Administrations for promotion of Film Tourism. As per these guidelines, Central Financial Assistance of Rs.2 lakh per film will be given to each of the State Governments/UT Administrations during each financial year
  4. 4. Bollywood‟s Influence On Indian Tourism Industry According to an estimate, almost 14 million people in India enjoy bollywood movies on a daily basis. Bollywood has an amazing fan base and an incredible mass appeal. The most significant influence of bollywood on tourism industry is seen in the commercial hub of India, „Mumbai” (earlier known as Bombay). Every day, many tourists from all over the world flock into this city to test their luck in Indian film Industry. Bollywood has a noteworthy contribution in popularizing and promoting Mumbai all over the world Apart from Mumbai, there have been many instances where Bollywood solely had brought about remarkable changes in the tourism trends. Kashmir, the favorite destination of Bollywood producers witnessed a steep rise in popularity after Shammi Kapoor‟s starrer „Kashmir ki Kali‟ released. Also, Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore starrer „Aradhana‟ showcased the beauty of the famous hill station „Darjeeling‟, making it one of the most favored romantic destination of its time.
