  • The Asahi Shimbun   is one of huge media companies in Japan. (朝日新聞社は、日本の巨大メディア企業です) We have been enjoying the success of business for long time. (長期にわたり、わが社は成功を収めてきました) But, we also have been facing now with difficult problems as well as American or European medias   since the world-wide crisis occurred. (ところが、米国や欧州など他のメディアと同様、世界的な危機が起きて以降、わが社も困難に直面しております) We are aiming at strengthening the digital range to find a way out of the present difficulties. (こうした危機を打開し、前に進むために、デジタル部門の強化を目指しております) Today, I am going to make a speech about the present situation in Japan and our steps toward the solutions. (本日は、こうした日本の現状とわが社の取り組みとを皆さんにご説明する予定です)
  • Today, I am going to explain the overview of the medias in Japan, and the current situation of Asahi Shimbun. (本日はまず、日本のメディアの現状をお話し、次に朝日新聞の説明を行います) Then, I will refer to the digital business of ours and the mobile phone business as newspaper company. (その後、朝日新聞社のデジタル戦略と、その中における携帯電話の位置づけを説明します)
  • Let me explain about Japan. (日本を説明いたしましょう) ( Japan ) Population:130M Area:378,000 平方キロ ( Spain) Population :43 M Area : 500,000 平方キロ Comparing Japan with Spain, its area is 75% of Spain, and its population is 3 times more than Spain. (日本とスペインを比較してみると、日本の面積はスペインの75%、人口は約3倍) Japan is so crowded country. (日本は非常に密集した国です)
  • There are 110 newspapers in Japan which have 64M circulation per day including evening issues. (国内の新聞社は110社で、その発行部数は夕刊を含めると6400万部となります) Population are 130M. So to say, half of population read newspaper every day. This is seldom case in the world. (人口は1億3千万人。国民の半分が毎日、新聞を読んでいる勘定になります。これは世界的にまれなケースです) Also, TV are 127. (テレビ局は127社) The total number of the internet users are 90M which make up 75.3% of the population. (インターネット利用者は9000万人で、全人口の75.3%を占めます)。 The number of cell phone: 110 M. (携帯電話の保有者は、1億1000万人です)
  • Strong point of newspaper in Japan is its home delivery service system. (日本の新聞の特長は、宅配制度にあります) Almost parts of the circulation are to be delivered to the individual houses from the delivery office   early in the morning even if it rains strongly or snows,. ( 新聞の大半は販売所から個人宅に配られます . 大雨でも、雪の日でも関係ありません) Of course, there are tabloids like Bild in Germany, but majority of the whole circulations are daily-newspaper like Asahi which has home delivery service. (もちろん、ドイツのビルト紙のような娯楽新聞はありますが、大半は宅配の朝日新聞のような一般紙です) The Asahi holds 77,600 carriers and 3,000 delivery depots to maintain this service. ( この制度を維持するために朝日新聞では、配達員7万7600人、販売所3000件を有しています )
  • I am referring to the Asahi Shimbun. (朝日新聞を説明します) Our circulation number of morning edition is about 8 million and evening edition is 4 million. Its circulation stand 20% of the whole in Japan. ( 朝日新聞の発行部数は、朝刊800万部、夕刊400万部。国内の20%を占めます ) These numbers are the second largest in Japan   next to Yomiuri which morning edition is 10M. (国内では朝刊が1000万部の読売に次ぎ、2位となっています) We have 5 publishing and editorial offices, Tokyo, Osaka, Seibu, Nagoya, and Hokkaido. 2500 of 5000 employees are reporters and staff writers. (東京、大阪、西部、名古屋、北海道の5か所で発行、編集をしており、従業員は5000人です。このうち半数の2500人が記者です) There are about 300 local offices in Japan and about 35 foreign offices. In Europe London, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Geneva, Rome, Vienna, Moscow. ( 国内支局は約300、海外支局は約35.欧州はロンドン、パリ、ベルリン、ブリュッセル、ジュネーブ、ローマ、ウイーン、モスクワです )
  • The company was founded in 1897. (創刊は1897年) It is o over the hundred thirty anniversary. (130周年となります) The capital is 6.5 million US dollar, and the annual sale is 4.0 billion US dollar. (資本金は6億5千万円=500万ユーロ)、営業収入は年4000億円(30億ユーロ)です。
  • As you know, the Media companies facing now to the difficulties under the influences of economic crises. (ご承知の通り、メディア産業は、経済危機の影響で現在、困難に直面しています) In the past, we gathered high quality articles and maintained high reliability. High reliability brought larger number of the readers and it gained good number of ads. We enjoyed the success. (過去、我々は高品質な記事を集め、信頼性を高めていました。信頼性によって、読者の数は増え、それによって広告は集まり、成功を享受していたのです) Of course, we still maintain the quality as before. (もちろん、高い品質は現在も変わりませんが)
  • There is no exception for Asahi Shimbun. The crisis hit the company. (朝日新聞も例外ではありません。危機は会社を直撃しました) We had deficit for 130 years history for the first time   in 2009. (今年、130年の歴史の中で初めての赤字となったのです) We have to make a breakthrough. (打開策を見つけなければなりません) Then, On-line business. The biggest reason is that internet does not have to have its delivery service, as I explained you (そこで、インターネット事業です。最大の理由は、先ほど説明した宅配が不要だからです)
  • The prices of newspaper Asahi Shimbun are following; (新聞紙面の広告料金です) For one full page,it costs 300,000 euro, for TV page 95,000 euro(color) (全面広告は30万ユーロ、テレビ欄は9万5千ユーロです)
  • Referring to the ad on internet: (では、インターネット広告のお話です) Top super banner costs 15,000 euro for one week. (トップのスーパーバナーは一週間で1万5千ユーロ。右側のトップレクタングルは、400万imp保証で1万9千ユーロです) Comparing with newspaper, the price of ad on internet should be very low. (新聞と比べると、ネットの広告料金は非常に安価です)
  • Web site, data base, and mobile. (大別すると、デジタル分野は3種類です。ウェブサイトとデータベース、携帯です) The revenue of news website is by advertisement business. (アサヒコムは広告) The revenue of database service is contract money for companies, schools, and libraries. ( データベースは企業や学校、図書館との契約料金収入 ) The revenue of mobile services is subscription fee by billing system of mobile operators. (携帯サービスは、携帯ユーザーの課金システムによる収入となります) Every newspaper company gets income from ad and sales. Web-site company gets ad and bill. In the case of Asahi, Web site service gets 1.5B yen, data base gets 800M yen, mobile gets 700M. (新聞は、販売収入と広告が収入源ですが、ウェブサイトは広告と課金が収入源です。朝日新聞の例ですと、サイトの広告収入が20億円、データベース10億円、携帯10億円です) As I explained, the revenue of the digital holds just 1% of the whole. (先ほど申しました通り、朝日新聞ではデジタル部門の収入はまだ全体の1パーセントに過ぎません) Ads income has been indeed decreasing, on the other hand, mobile business is being more attracted. (広告収益が落ち込む中、今、注目されるのが携帯サイトです) We have 13 mobile sites, which are managed by about 10 staffs including 4 technical staffs. (携帯サイトは13コンテンツ.スタッフは10人、技術者は4人)
  • Now we have 13 mobile sites and over million subscribers. (携帯サービスは13。契約者は100万人を超えています) Some services are based upon our own contents, but some services are based upon partner’s contents. (サービスのうちいくつかは独自コンテンツであり、いくつかはパートナー会社のものです) We could not build such many mobile sites without partnership of other companies. (パートナー企業なしでは、こうした携帯サイトの構築は不可能でした) The revenue should be shared, but some services are pretty profitable. (その場合、収入は分割となりますが、高い収益率のものもあります)
  • Our division   in charge of web has 150 staffs.   It is very small ration in the company. Just 3%. (ウェブ部門の社員は約150人です。全社の中では小さく、わずか3%です) Annual sale of our division is also smaii, just about 30million euro.   It is equivalent to 1%   of the total. (ウェブでの営業収入も少額で、約40億円 =3000 万ユーロ。営業収入全体の1パーセントにすぎません) (But the company is concentrating on internet business under thus depression) しかし、この不況の中、会社はインターネットによる発信に非常に力を入れ始めております。
  • Roughly divided, we have 3 kinds of businesses ways; (大別して朝日新聞のデジタルビジネスは3種です) Internet, database, and mobile service (インターネットのアサヒ・コム、データベース、携帯電話です)
  • I am referring to the contents of Asahi.com; (アサヒコムのコンテンツについて触れましょう) 70 to 80% of the contents are from newspaper. (コンテンツの70~80%は新聞です) 10 to 20% are the original article which our digital media journalists reported and wrote by their self. The contents are feature stories or feature photos. (10~20%はデジタル部門の独自の記者が書いたもので、フューチャー記事や写真です) Ca.10% are from outside writer. (10%は社外筆者です) Of course, in the case that big accident like airplane crush occurred, editorial section of newspaper sends special flash article only for the web. (もちろん、飛行機の墜落事故など、大事件のときは、新聞の編集局がデジタル向けだけに短い原稿を送ります)
  • I am explaining the flow how the newspaper to be completed. May be the same way as yours. (新聞が出来上がるまでのフローを説明しましょう。たぶん、あなた方と同じと思いますが) The articles the reporters wrote are to be sent their editors. And the editor pass them over to the copy desk.. The copy desk send them to printing section, and they are to be printed in the factory. The completed newspaper are to be delivered by trains or trucks to the delivery depot. And finally delivery persons deliver the papers to the individual houses. (記者が原稿を書き、デスクへ。デスクは整理部へその原稿を渡し、整理部は印刷工程の係へ。それから、輪転機にかけて新聞が完成し、トラックや列車で販売店へ。販売店で配達員が各戸へ配達します)
  • I am explaining the article flow for digital site. (デジタルページを説明します) As I said we have 2500 staff writers in the company( 4HQs and ca.300 local offices). (すでに説明したとおり、社内には記者2500人がおり、4本社、300総局で働いています) They write the articles for newspaper and the article are to be sent to Digital editorial section which only receives articles from newspaper and upload to web-site. (記者は新聞向けに記事を書き、その新聞記事はデジタル編集部門へ送られ、アサヒ・コムへアップロードされます) 60%~70% articles of the newspaper are uploaded for web-site. (新聞記事の50~60%がウェブに掲載されます) The staffs for this Digital editorial section work in shift, so to say, today for newspaper copy desk and tomorrow for digital. There are 56 staffs of the digital business center. 18 of them are for business only, the rest are for “consist section”. Ca.15 are making coverage only for digital site, not for newspaper.
  • Our advantage is double: (優先順位は2つです) As business, it is income, so to say, ad and bill (ビジネスとしては収益、つまり、広告と課金) As journalist, it must be rapidness, accuracy and reliability (ジャーナリストとしては、速報性、正確さ、信頼性です) The advantage for journalist; rapidness ,accuracy and reliability supplement to each other. (この速報性、正確さ、信頼性がなければ、記事は売れませんから、両者は補完関係にあります)
  • The page views of asahi.com per day(average) are 9,651,388. Page views of September 09 are 289,541,645. Unique users of September are 9,656,799.
  • Pc web site-asahi.com is ad model. (パソコンのアサヒコムは広告モデル) Mobile service is bill model. (携帯サービスは課金モデルです) (Revenue from ad is going down because of depression. So, we would like to count hope on bill service) ( 景気の悪化から、広告収入は落ち込んでおり、いま、期待されるのは課金モデル、つまり携帯サービスです )
  • The use of mobile phone is much more various than its of European countries: (携帯電話の用途は、欧州の携帯電話よりも多様です) For the first, phone call. You do not need the explanation. (まず、通話。これは説明の必要はないでしょう) (2) The Second, e-mail. Young people have communications with their friends rather by e-mail than phone call in Japan. We have very complicated letters in Japanese. But dictionary-technologies did solve it. (二番目に、メール。若者は通話よりもメールで友人と連絡を取り合うことが多いようです。日本語は非常に複雑な言葉ですが、辞書機能でこれを克服しました) (3) The Third, Internet. We read the news or make shopping by mobile internet. Today’s issue is this point. We are going to make business with this area. I will explain this point later. (三番目にインターネット。ニュースを読んだり、ショッピングをしたりします。今回のテーマはこれです。我々はこのインターネットでビジネスを展開しようとしています。後に説明いたします) (4) The Fourth, TV. Many Japanese mobile phones have digital TV receiving function. We use them in cars or trains outside. (四番目にテレビ機能です。多くの日本の携帯はテレビ機能を持っていて、列車や車、屋外でテレビを見ることが多いです) (5) The Fifth, music downloading.. Mobile phone could be used like i-pod or walkman player. (五番目に、音楽のダウンロード。i-podや、walkmanのように音楽プレーヤーとして使います) (6) The Sixth, camera and movie. Almost all types of Japanese mobile telephones are installed with camera and movie camera. (次に六番目としては、カメラやビデオ。大半の携帯にはこの機能が付いています) (7) The Seventh, digital purse. We can make shopping in the department house or Kiosk with mobile phone by touching   panel .We can go through the ticket gate in railway station by touching panel. (七番目はデジタル財布。デパートやキオスクで、携帯を接触させるだけで、買い物ができます。駅の電車の改札も通れます) (8) Sports function: The newest mobile phones have a function like: measure running time or wasted calorie ,and etc. (最後に、スポーツ機能。ジョギングのタイムを測ったり、消費カロリーを計測したりすることができます) This is the way of the use of mobile phones in Japan. Survey says, young people bring their mobile phones in the first place rather than others when fire occurred in their houses. (日本では、以上のような携帯の使われ方をしています。ある調査で、火事で真っ先に何をもって逃げますかという質問に、若者で一番多かったのが携帯電話ということでした)
  • I am to explain the overview of Japanese mobile market. (日本の携帯市場を説明しましょう) There are three big mobile operators. (国内には大きく3社があります) NTT Docomo has over 50% share, KDDI has about 30 % share, and SoftBank has about 20% share. (シェアはドコモが50%を超え、KDDIが約30%、ソフトバンクが20%です) Total handset number is closing to Japanese population. (携帯端末数は全国の人口に迫っています。) 93=3・2%、95 = 10・6%、00 = 78・5%、05 = 90・0%、08 = 95・6% So mobile handset business is getting saturated. ( 携帯ビジネスは浸透しています) Their competition is really hard. (競争は過激です) Japanese mobile phone bill was so expensive before, but now it is getting more reasonable. (日本の携帯通話料は過去、非常に高額でしたが、現在は適正な料金になりました) The Average Revenue per User must be 53.2 US dollar in 2008. It is 11% down from 2007. (2008年の一人当たりの平均収入は43ユーロで、07年比で11パーセントの落ち込みです)
  • Let me explain the content service system and the billing system of Japanese mobile operators. (日本の携帯サービスのシステムについて説明いたします) Docomo’s user can push the button of the content service called “imode”, The user can choose service name and category, and access the mobile site. (ドコモのユーザーは、「i-mode」の呼ばれるボタンを押します。ユーザーはここでサービスとカテゴリーを選択し、携帯サイトに接続します) And when the user subscribes, it makes the registration to user database, and monthly fee is charged. The fee was paid by billing system of mobile operators with phone bill. (利用登録をすると、データベースにユーザーが登録され、月の使用料が課金される仕組みです。課金は、キャリアの毎月の請求書の中に含まれています) The commission is about 10%. I heard that the commission was much larger in the Europe. (手数料は10%。欧州よりもかなり割高と聞いています) Monthly fee of our main mobile site is 1 US dollar, so that the commission must be 0.1 US dollar for Docomo. The Docomo’s commission is 9%. (朝日新聞の携帯サービスは約0・8ユーロ。つまり、ドコモへのコミッションは0・07ユーロとなります。ドコモは9%です)
  • We began the first information service on mobile handset on February 1999. (朝日新聞の携帯サービスの開始は1999年2月です) It had grown up along “exploding” popularization of mobile phone service. The saturation of mobile phone of Japan is(household); 1993=3.2% 1995=10.6% 2000=78.5% 2002=87.6% 2005=90.0 2008=95.6% The number of subscribes are 112M which is 88% of population.   • The graph shows the change of our main mobile site subscribers. (グラフは朝日新聞の携帯契約者の推移です) The peak was in summer 2004. (ピークは2004年でした) After 2004, subscribers are just about decreasing little by little. (2004年以降は少しずつ減少しています)
  • First, smart phone like iPhone has been focused on. (かつて、 iphone のようなスマートフォンが注目されました) New service on iPhone were to tried to be developed. (この iPhone 向けの新サービスの開発が試みられました) But smart phone is very expensive and very functional. (しかし、スマートフォンは非常に高額で、多機能です) I think the smart phone will not be able to gain major market. (私はスマートフォンはメジャーにはなりえないと考えます) I think simple and cheap   mobile phone are much more favored. (簡単で安価な端末がより好まれると思います) Note PC market must be influenced more by smart phone. (ノートパソコン市場は、スマートフォンの影響を強く受けるに違いありません) The Second, many free content services are losing power or gone. (第二に、多くの無料コンテンツは力を失い、消えかけています) Free content service is based upon the advertisement business. (無料コンテンツサービスは広告ビジネスに依拠しています) Clients of advertisement are influenced by the world economic depression. (広告主は世界的な経済危機の影響を受けています) So I think that charge content service has a little bit of advantage. (このため、課金サービスは有効なのです) The third, the action of Mobile User has been changed. Long articles are welcomed to the mobile phone users. (三番目に、携帯ユーザーの行動が変わりました。ユーザーは長い記事を読むようになったのです)
  • Before, the mobile operators provides just infra structure of content service. (以前は、携帯キャリアはコンテンツサービスのインフラを提供するだけでした) But it has been changing. Now the mobile operators provide “charge content service” (しかし、変わりました。今や、キャリアも課金サービスをするようになったのです) . The competition got to be so hard between mobile operators. (このため、競争は激化しました) The mobile operators can’t get the plenty revenue from phone fee. They entered to charge content business. (携帯電話の利用料金からだけでは、十分な収益を得られなくなり、コンテンツビジネスに参入してきました) They can strongly control user traffic on mobile service. (キャリアは、携帯サービスの動向を強くコントロールできます) So our service was very influenced by mobile operator’s content service. (このため我々のサービスは、このキャリアのコンテンツサービスに強く影響されます) If we can share the revenue of mobile operator’s content service, We also can get big revenue. (しかし、携帯キャリアのサービスと協力すれば、我々もまたおおきな利益を得られます)
  • We provide partial articles to mobile operator content service. (我々は、現在記事の一部を携帯キャリアに提供しています) The article is limited in 1 st paragraph with link to our content service. (この写真の通り、まず第一段落を提供します。次の段落は朝日・日刊スポーツにリンクされます) This is very effective system.   We can get both content fee and user traffic. ( これは効果的で、課金とユーザートラフィックの両方を得ることができます )
  • There could be no good conclusion, no final goal. (結論は見えません、ゴールもないでしょう) We should think the best strategy just for the present business situation we are facing to. (我々が直面している現在のビジネス状況のために、最良の対応を考えなければなりません) Especially the development of mobile business is very fast. (特に携帯ビジネスの展開は非常に急速です) We don’t know which is better, charging model or free fee model. (課金モデルか、無料モデルか、どちらが良いのかわかりません) Mobile business situation is different up to the countries. (携帯ビジネスの状況は国によって異なります)。 But the importance of the mobile business is getting bigger and bigger with regardless of the country-border. (しかし、携帯ビジネスの重要性は、国境とは無関係に増加の一途をたどっています) Thank you…
