  2. 2. Violence Occurring in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico <ul><li>Since 2006, more than 30,000 people have been killed in Mexico </li></ul><ul><li>One of the deadliest cities in the world </li></ul><ul><li>Estimated death toll of 6,500 since 2008 </li></ul>

  4. 4. Communication problem <ul><li>It is believed that there is a lack of communication between our City Government and National Government </li></ul><ul><li>Our goal is for the City of El Paso to receive more reinforcement from the U.S. Government to create better border safety </li></ul>

Background <ul><li>The City of El Paso operates under a council-manager form of government </li></ul><ul><li>Approved by a city charter on February 7 th , 2004 </li></ul><ul><li>Consists of: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>8 Council members </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Mayor </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>City Manager </li></ul></ul><ul><li>John Cook is currently the Mayor of El Paso, Texas </li></ul><ul><li>Serves an approximate population of 620,000+ </li></ul><ul><li>El Paso is the sixth largest city in the state of Texas and the twenty-second largest in the country. </li></ul><ul><li>Border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico with only the Rio Grande dividing the two </li></ul>

Current Communication Strategy <ul><li>Meeting is held every Tuesday at 9 a.m. </li></ul><ul><li>Many things are discussed, including current events </li></ul><ul><li>All 8 City Representatives and Mayor are present </li></ul><ul><li>Open to the public </li></ul><ul><li>Time reserved for the publics issues(“Call to the public”) </li></ul>

Supporting Information <ul><li>“ Communication and Cooperation is established with the police department and other law enforcement in Juarez help aid the amount of crime that spills into the U.S.”(elpasotexas.gov) </li></ul><ul><li>Leads us to believe that the city is content with the amount of help that they are currently receiving </li></ul><ul><li>Governor Rick Perry has asked for assistance by requesting National Guard send troops to help patrol the border </li></ul>
  9. 9. Two of Our Own <ul><li>“ Leaders at the University of Texas at El Paso remembered two slain students Monday on the patio that connects the College of Business with the library. Manuel Acosta Villalobos, 25, and Eder Andres Diaz, 23, were killed by gunmen on the evening of Nov. 2 in Colonia Rincones de Santa Rita, Chihuahua state police said. According to Mexican police, the two gunmen fired 36 rounds, hitting the students multiple times. Both Villalobos and Diaz were undergraduate students at the UTEP’s college of Business Administration.” </li></ul>
