Examine and Assess the Usefulness of One of the Following...
Examine and assess the usefulness of one of the following theories of crime and deviance in terms
of explaining crime and the social problems in modern society.
A subculture is a cultural subgroup. They are considered opposite from the mainstream culture
because of their uniqueness. They form when the mainstream culture fails to meet the needs of a
particular group of people. Subculture theories primarily focus on crime and Juvenile delinquency.
Theorists believe that if this pattern of offending can be understood and controlled then it will break
the transition from teenage offender into habitual criminal. Some of the theories which will be
discussed today are developed from functionalism assuming that criminal activity is motivated by ...

Figures from the Crime survey for England and Wales have shown that 2.1 million violent incidents
were recorded in 2011/2012. It's been estimated that young people aged 10–17 were responsible for
23% of police recorded crime. In 2010 equivalent to just over a million police recorded crimes.
Considering other theorists who studied subcultures was Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin.
Cloward was an American Sociologist and an activist. He influenced the strain theory of criminal
behavior. Lloyd Ohlin was an American sociologist and criminologist who taught at Harvard law
school, Columbia University and the university of Chicago. Over his career he studied the causes
and effects of crime and punishment, especially as it related to youthful offenders and delinquents.
This is seen as a functional perspective of subcultural behavior. Many working class youths who
cannot gain status legitimately, become frustrated and therefore try to gain status through
illegitimate. They create their own subculture and reject the norms and values of mainstream
society. Richard Clowen in 1961 said, " The boy who joins a gang isn't in a rut. He has aspirations,
but no place to go with them". Both theorists argue that delinquency resulted from the
irresponsibility of youths as a symptom of poverty and the lack of alternative opportunities caused
by poverty. The conditions underlying delinquency could be resolved through social programs in
local communities that will help address the

Is Youth Crime A Problem To Society?
Is youth crime really a problem to society?
Young people have been a main focus in society. Since 1960 there has been an increase in youth
crime which is the reason as to why there are major adult concerns (Newburn, 2013). "Government
became more harsh and intrusive in dealing with young people who were seen to be a problem"
(France, 2007, pg.19). Older generations perceive young people as having less morals and respect in
comparison to what they did at their age (Newburn, 2013). In particular, society views the youth of
today as troublemakers, lazy, untrustworthy and unreliable. There are different theories that provide
an explanation between involvement in offending and different factors such as family factors and
wider social factors which will be discussed below.
There is debate whether youth crime is really a problem to society or just an issue that is constructed
by society. It is argued that media has influenced society's views on this matter by categorising
young people as 'folk devils' (Banks, 2013). Certain groups, episodes and people that pose a threat to
society's values is when a moral panic takes place (Cohen, 1972). For example, this can be seen
nowadays when there is no actual threat but old people get intimidated when they see large groups
of young people hanging about on streets. These influences led to policy change, increasing the level
of social control. This means that youth crime may be perceived as a moral panic rather than an
actual problem.

The citizens of Anderson, Indiana know that the town has its ups and downs. From the outside

The Problem Of Crime Rates
Overview of the Problem I currently the Chief of Police in Savannah, Georgia and the problem that
our city in currently facing is an increase in the crime rate in the city especially in the area of violent
crimes. Violent crime rose 8.8 percent in 2014 over the previous year with robberies and shooting
accounting for most of those crimes. The city reported "32 homicides in 2014, which was two more
than 2013, and the number of rapes increased from 49 to 64". The City Manager and City Council
has informed me that these numbers are unacceptable and in an effort to control, the rising crime
rate I propose the following measures (McCammon, 2015).
Constraints and Lack of Resources One of the largest constraints due to lack of resources we face in
controlling crime in the Savannah Police Department is the shortage of police officers. On any given
week between the five different precincts there can be a shortage of 50 to 60 officers overall. As a
result, the officers spend most of their time responding to 911 calls and therefore do not have time to
staff their beats or practice crime prevention. This also does not allow them any time to interact with
the public, which is an important part of crime prevention, and it can leave a precinct un–patrolled if
they receive as few as three overlapping calls that require a back up as six officers can be all that is
available during a short staff shift. In addition, it results in neglected citizens complaints as it leaves
the officers little

The Social Problem Of Crime
This information analysis focuses on the social problem computer crime, but more specifically
identity theft. In this paper, I analyzed six different articles from various sources. I chose cyber
crime as my topic because I have an interest in computers and coding. I also like to watch
documentaries and a television show on cybercrime scene investigations. Analyzing articles on this
topic will help me develop further knowledge on this topic and how it is considered a social problem
in our society. Computer crime refers to any violation of the law in which a computer is the target or
means of criminal activity (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht, 2014, p.113). Computer crime is also known
as cybercrime. Cybercrime continues to have far reaching effects because it affects individuals,
companies, and organizations and is increasingly a problem in the globalized world we live in. This
is because we rely so much on cell–phones, computers, and us many social network sites.
Cybercrime is considered a social problem because it negatively affects a large group of people in
our society. In 2014, there were 1.5 million cyber attacks worldwide ("IBM Cyber Security
Intelligence Index," 2015, pg.13). One type of computer crime is identity theft. Identity theft is the
use of someone else's personal information to obtain credit or other economic rewards (Mooney, et
al, 2014, pg.113). Identity theft first became a crime in 1998, when Congress passed the Identity
Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act

The Problem Of Crime And Crime
Before we can discuss the causes of crime, it is first necessary to determine what we mean by the
word "crime". The legal definition of crime refers to "an action or omission which constitutes an
offence" and involves some sort of punishment – but as we will go on to explore, this definition fails
to capture the full complexity of the concept of crime. Likewise, the question of "what causes
crime" has generated a multifocal body of criminological work. This paper will demonstrate that it is
virtually impossible to pinpoint a single cause of crime that is applicable across all categories of
crime, ranging from sexual offences to white–collar crime, and although existing theories do give us
a good foundation for investigation, they are limited in this sense. This discussion will begin with a
brief unpacking of our conception of "crime", followed by an evaluation of various crime theories
and perspectives with particular focus on male violence as a cause of crime, an area that took
criminologists twenty years to begin exploring after feminist pressure.
The legal definition of crime simply points to punishable offences in statute and takes no account of
crime as a "social construction" – this is the idea that it is not some quality of the act that renders it
criminal, rather it is the reaction of society, a viewpoint central to Becker's Labelling Theory . What
we understand as "crime" is not inherently criminal and has been shaped by society. As Muncie
asserts, "crime has

Crime Problem In The United States
Crime is a major problem in the United States. It is happening to often than it should. Everyday
there is always a crime story–taking place in the news or in the daily newspaper. It is difficult for
individuals to not be drawn to negativity happening in their community. There are many different
ideas on how to solve the crime problems that are happening in our country. First we need to have
stricter punishment and stick to it for all criminals. Many of the criminals are getting off with little
to no punishment, which sometimes they become repeat offenders. With some criminals having
good behavior while serving time, the justice system are allowing them be released early from
confinement and out on parole. This is unacceptable. If they committed

The Problem Of Violent Crime
Violent crime is a completely human characteristic. It has dominated our history books, been
sensationalized by the media and created a pervasive fear which dominates our culture. Is there a
way to possibly prevent violent crime? Neurocriminology, a classification of criminology centered
on neuroscience and its relationship between the causes and cures of crime, may have the answer to
that question. Adrian Raine, a criminal psychologist for more than thirty years, proposes that
criminal behavior may have its origins in heredity and biology and future criminal tendencies can be
predicted in children. Professor Raine's discoveries can potentially thwart violent crime activity by
identifying genetic markers which are characteristic of violent offenders. If so, what are the moral
and ethical dilemmas society will now have to contend with when tagging certain individuals as
natural–born killers? Despite this milestone discovery, many questions stills persist such as how
society will react. In addition, though potential criminal behavior may be prevented by examining
genetic markers, the moral and ethical implications of neurocriminology, may lead to discrimination
and the further criminalization of poverty. Human beings are notorious for discrimination. They will
use any means possible to create a case for justified marginalization; race, sexual orientation,
appearance, and physical or mental disability. Neurocriminology may be just another apparatus in
the arsenal of

The Problem Of Violent Crime
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Violent crime is a serious problem and could not to be neglected in present society. It means all
incidents of wounding and assault with or without injury in the Crime Survey for England and
Wales (ONS, 2015). The crime rate in Liverpool was about 90.86 per 1000 population in police
record by the end of June 2015 (HO, 2015). According to Liverpool City Council (2015), the
violence rate per 1000 population was increase 16.6% from 2013 to 2014 and reach 10.2 from April
2014 to March 2015, higher than other crime. At the same time, the number in 1000 people that
experience personal robbery was about 485, not all robberies would be reported to the police so
maybe the real condition was graver. Hence, violence and robbery continue to be of increasing
concern.
In order to descend violent crime, arrange more police on the street might be a suitable option.
Many researchers found this solution lead to the steady decline of crime rate (Ratcliffe et al, 2011).
However, the expensive cost might limit the scale of this method. Correctional education is also an
effectively solution of offender but take a long time. A combined system of hotspot policing and
prison education may be possible if care is reducing crime rate.
Therefore, this report will compare the feasibility of police patrol and correctional education in
terms of cost and effectiveness, thereby exploring the more viable method to reduce violent crime in
Liverpool.

Definition of Legal system
Legal systems can be split between civil law and common law systems. The term "civil law"
referring to a legal system should not be confused with "civil law" as a group of legal subjects
distinct from criminal or public law. A third type of legal system–accepted by some countries
without separation of church and state–is religious law, based on scriptures. The specific system that
a country is ruled by is often determined by its history, connections with other countries, or its
adherence to international standards. The sources that jurisdictions adopt as authoritatively binding
are the defining features of any legal system. Yet classification is a matter of form ... Show more

We all get attacked by those faulty ethereal goblins of our minds and hearts, but most of us succeed
to resist them. It's easy to act on anger, greed, revenge or any of highlighted above, but it takes
courage and strength to determine that there is something more important than that.
There are two core reasons why weakness prevails with some:
1) Lack of faith, not believing enough in the power of one's own internal weapons (against inner
demons), such as: courage, tolerance, understanding, forgiveness, mercy, honesty, sincerity,
integrity, honor, modesty, humbleness, generosity, love, compassion, kindness, detachment,
patience, self–discipline, temperance, etc.
As a result of not trusting inner resources, there is no enough motivation to develop them and use
them.

because they are not balanced.

My Design Problem In Victim Against Crime
My design problem for this script was that I wanted to adapt a short story that I had written into a
film format. Another aspect of my design problem is taking such an impactful event that occurred
over the span of many years and compacting the story properly. I previously wrote a short story
about the brutal rape and murder of my cousin, Quenette Shehane. Although it is a terrible event, a
lot of good came out of it through my great–aunt, Miriam Shehane, advocating for victims rights
with her organization, Victims Against Crime and Leniency (V.O.C.A.L.). I am very passionate
about this story, as it has changed my life even though I never had the chance to meet Quenette since
she died in 1976. Thus, I wanted to challenge myself and put

The Problem Of Teenage Crime
Teenage crime is a very important problem that the united states is facing these days. It erodes our
country economically and morally. The government, along with parents are still trying to come up
with a solution to this international problem. Rising aggression, especially among teenagers is very
harmful to the society as a whole, and their reasons behind this are more compound and more
complex then we could ever imagine. The majority of Crimes committed by teenagers includes gang
violence, theft, assault and even murder. The most important factors that trigger these teens to
commit these acts are their family life, media, and the collapse of their community. Family
conditions proved to be a direct effect on a teenager 's behavior. Positive family environments
provide a strong base for the development of a child. From the very first years, a child 's
development and the way they act are influenced by the environment they encounter. Whenever a
teenager isn 't getting the right support needed, they often turn to acts of violence to get their parents
attention or let out their aggression from their inner feelings. living in a dysfunctional household
where everything is unstable and the family lives a transient lifestyle, they often move around and
aren 't stable enough to stay in one place. When this happens there are greater risks of the teen
dropping out of school and they then become bored and run the streets and the streets often lead
them to hanging with the

Guns and crime meaning is that crime involving the use of a gun. The relation between guns and
crime are both so complex and unique because always crime happen because of using guns and most
of serious crime is related with gun such as murder, homicide.
Thus, I think guns and crime is inextricable relationship. We should solve guns and crime problem
at least a little bit although guns and crime can't solve clearly. Also, their relationship is so serious to
the entire world. Thus, people are always concerning about how can we reduce guns and crime rate.
Additionally, people try to figure out ways of solving guns and crime problems.

The Problem Of Crime Rate
Abstract
Crime is a big problem in the world. Many believe that nothing can be done to prevent it. The crime
rates are increasing rapidly all around the world. Crime is not easy to completely remove from our
society. For many years Scientist and psychologists have argued over whether upbringing forms of a
child's behavior or whether they are born with a personality disorder, or could it be the way their
brain is set up or their body type? Society may never really know all the causes of this criminal
behavior. With all the disagreement going on with the subject on "the causes of criminals", the
controversial question would be "Are criminals born, or made?"
There are so many reasons behind the increased crime rate. I believe to figure out why the crime rate
is rapidly increasing, it is important to figure out the main cause and treat it. With proper measures
like straight laws, sufficient punishments, good moral and education, we may be able to avoid the
crimes to a certain extent.
In today society, crime rate is increasingly on the rise. The crimes that are being caused are stealing,
poverty, desperation, kidnap, rape, robbery, physical fighting, substance abuse, and many other
crimes that are not mentioned. For many years it has been said that a person's parents are the root to
make the person they become as an adult. A child's role model would mainly be their parents, but as
a person's age and grows older. They start to have other influence in their lives. Such as

The Problem Of White Collar Crime
White collar crime is a problem that we do not really see the full extent of; Geis and Stotland (1980)
present the argument that the seriousness of victimisation caused by many corporations is much
greater than that caused by common crimes however the public seem much less interested and
concerned with white collar crime. Some traditional criminological theories have attempted to prove
that white collar crime is not a different and separate phenomenon to common, every day crime.
Robert Merton's Strain Theory is applied to everyday crime, however his theory was in fact set up as
an economic theory that he believed could explain all types of corporate crimes as well as traditional
crimes. Gottfredson and Hirschi also provided what they understood to be a 'General Theory of
Crime' with Control Theory, which they also believed to be relevant to both white collar and
traditional crimes. I am going to discuss these theories in detail and show how they do, and do not
provide sufficient explanations of white collar crimes. I am also going to include Organizational
Theory in my discussion which looks at the issue of understanding crime in a different way.
Traditional theories such as strain theory and control theory form a certain understanding of the
issue, on the contrary some argue that these theories are not appropriate and need twisting to fit the
issue, some suggesting a completely separate way of thinking is needed to understand white collar
and corporate crime.

Should Sociologists Attempt To Combat The Social Problem...
Distinguish between crime as a social and sociological problem. To what extent should sociologists
attempt to combat the social problem of crime?
Although similar in most senses, social and sociological problems have completely different
meanings. A social problem is an issue that exists within a society, which individuals are opposed to.
A sociological problem on the other hand is an issue that arises and is discovered by sociologists due
to sociological research. "Sociologists study human social lives, activities, interactions, processes,
and organizations within the context of larger social, political, and economic forces. They examine
how social influences affect different individuals and groups, and the ways organizations and

It is a violation of social norm, and therefore crime can also be described as an act of deviance.
Deviance can be both a minor or major offence. So how do sociologists go about combatting this
problem? An act of Social control can be defined broadly as an organized action intended to change
people's behaviour (Innes 2003). The fundamental goal of social control is to maintain social order
and the everyday behaviours on which individuals base their lives. One method for implementing
rules are through sanctions. Sanctions can be positive and also negative. Positive sanctions are
prizes given for fitting in with standards. Negative sanctions are disciplines for disregarding
standards. Black (1976) distinguishes four key styles of social control, each of which characterizes
deviance and the proper reaction to it in an alternate way. Penal social control capacities by denying
certain social practices and reacting to infringement with discipline. Compensatory social control
obliges a wrongdoer to pay a casualty to make up for a mischief submitted. Therapeutic social
control includes the utilization of treatment to return people to a typical state. Conciliatory social
control expects to accommodate the gatherings of a debate and commonly restore agreement to a
social relationship that has been harmed. While penal and compensatory social controls accentuate
the utilization of assents, helpful and mollifying social controls stress procedures of

The Problem Of Hate Crimes

thinking it is the best solution to solve every problem given to us by the government and the media.
One of the big problems is the media, whether it be the news on TV or the internet, they contort
every problem to conform to what they want there viewers to believe. As one of my college
professors told me "sometimes the media has to create their own problems so they can cover the

The Problem Of High Crime Rate
From a lot of our class discussions, as well as interactions from with other students on campus I feel
that a prevalent issue both to our school, and citizens of the downtown Tampa area in general is
safety. As students on campus we receive almost weekly emails from the school's security
department informing us somebody, usually a student, getting robbed or accosted in some way by an
unknown person and that police are investigating. Rarely do we get emails saying the person was
caught, this has lead to some students to begin to feel unsafe in the areas around campus. So the
issue is how to lower crime rate in the area, and increase the safeness for citizens and for students in
particular. The first step in addressing this problem is figuring out what is happening. The first thing
would be to look up the crime reports from both the university security and Tampa police
department in the areas surrounding the school. The first thing this helps us determine is if there has
been a rise in crime in recent years or if it is an ongoing problem. If there is a rise we can look at the
areas where the rise occurred and focus there, if not we know problem is for the area as a whole.
Second by looking at the crime reports we can look at both the areas where the crimes are happing
and the situations that resulted in the incident. Information like time of incident, information of
victim; i.e. age, race, gender, sex, etc., if the victim was alone or intoxicated and other information

The Problem Of Crime Filled Neighborhood
A run down, crime filled neighborhood is looked at as something that needs improvement and
changing. Similar to a piece of furniture, people with money try to refurbish it and make it look new
while taking away the dinginess. However with neighborhoods it is not this simple. Many people are
quick to assume that by gentrifying a neighborhood, the amount of crime will decrease and this is
not a far–fetched thought. It seems self explanatory– large amounts of crime occur in low–income
neighborhoods therefore if higher income residents and homes replace those poorer residents and
homes, the large amounts of crime will no longer exist. However, gentrification is a complex
process and although it may look as if the process is a great thing, it ... Show more content on

Even when coffee shops and gang heavy neighborhoods "...cross paths in a neighborhood, one high
rank will not over come the other high rank..." (580). Both of these types of gentrification, in which
their was no government involvement, showed how gentrification can reduce the rates of crime,
specifically gang related homicides.
Contrary to the types of gentrification mentioned above, when it came to the state involved
gentrification, it was a different story than the other two types. The study proved though you can
invade it, you cannot simply take away a criminals territory to decrease crime. State involved
gentrification in this study was the demolition of public housing and this process "significantly
increased gang homicide over time" (584). Public housing is housing sponsored by the government
and because the government doesn't always consider what is best for poorer neighborhoods, the
homes are often times run down and located in crime heavy areas. The demolition of these homes
causes "an immediate effect of displacement and gang turf disruption on gang violence" (578). This
demolition left people without territories and really nowhere to go, something that increased
homicides. In addition to increasing gang related homicides, removing housing and territories causes
"untended persons and property are fair game for plunder" (Skogan 216). This study and many
others have proved "just

The Problem Of Crime And Gun Violence
Although it seems like the problem of crime and gun violence is never approached or discussed,
there are leaders within America tirelessly working to find a solution to help decrease crime. Alex
Yablon puts it like this in his article on The Trace, saying "the lack of progress on the federal level
should not be confused with a lack of proposed solutions to America 's gun violence epidemic –
there are plenty of those, on both sides of the table." Yablon means there are some bills that would
limit the access to guns as well as bills that would prevent the enforcement of restrictions on guns.
However, he is not the only one to have an opinion of how the government is viewing crime and gun
violence. John Donohue, in his article Gun Control: What We can learn from other Advanced
Countries, points out that besides being the world leader in the amount of guns available to citizens,
the U.S. does not seem to be making much progress on finding a solution. Donohue also goes on to
say that, "the stricter gun laws of other 'advanced countries' have restrained homicidal violence,
suicides and gun accidents," despite there being protest by the armed citizens (Newsweek Magazine
Web). These two men each hold different viewpoints when it comes to how they think crime and
gun violence is being addressed by the government, however, each of their viewpoints presents a
valid opinion in regards to the issue. Still, in order to fully understand what is going on at the federal
level, one has to

The Problem Of Hate Crime
"To live in this life, one needs a soul". That is a sentence in a famous song of Trinh Cong Son, a
very well–known composer in Vietnam. Although this is not a speech from a worldwide popular
artist, the sentence is completely true. Without soul, crimes are available everywhere. People will
not think of each other, and they only care about themselves. They will fight each other over their
interests. People should understand that having soul is a luckiest thing they have. However, human
do not understand or do not want to understand this truth, they create hatred, grudge, and crimes.
Day to day, crimes are present everywhere around the world. One of the crimes, which is very
common, is hate crime. Hate crime has been appeared for a long time. It was formed when human
know what is hatred and grudge. However, people recently defined this crime when many incident
happened such as the incident of James Byrd, Matthew Shepard, and Harvey Milk. Those incidents
were one of the largest and noticeable hate crimes at those periods of time. These hate crimes were
and have been attractive a lot to media and people. Although these crimes left a lot of consequences,
many hate crimes like these still happen, and they are unstoppable. Hate crimes never stop
happening. What is hate crime? How is it different to other crimes and how can people distinguish it
to other ones? Hate crime is simply a normal crime such as a murder or an attack on a person or

The Mentally Ill O FF Ender Treatment And Crime Reduction...
The Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2004: Problems and Prospects by
Christine M. Litschgea and Michael G. Vaughn, is a research article whose focus is three–fold. First,
the researchers reviewed the literature available on the components that have influenced the
considerable increases of incarcerated persons with severe mental illness (SMI). Secondly, they
analyzed the Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2004 (MIOTCRA), and
evaluated if, since its inception, has reduced the problems associated with incarcerated persons with
SMI. Thirdly, they offered recommendations about policy improvements; how to decrease the
number of SMI persons imprisoned.

Lastly, they propose recommendations, these are based on the outcome of their reviews and
analyses, which include: effecting and requiring enforcement of policies already in existence,
decreasing the number of individuals with untreated SMI by changing outpatient commitment
specifications, which would require close monitoring of patients' compliance with treatment, thus
reducing the overall number of SMI individuals becoming involved in the criminal justice system at
all. They also recognized the need for evidence–based programs, and additional research to
investigate the actual effectiveness of MHC's and public mental health services.
Analysis and Evaluation
The issue chosen by the researchers, is a relevant issue facing the criminal justice system. The
predominance of mental health problems among incarcerated persons in both prisons and jails
present major problems for each component of the criminal justice system; law enforcement, courts,
and corrections. The entire criminal justice system is negatively impacted and overburdened by
untreated mental illness. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than half of all prison and
jail inmates have a mental health problem (James & Glaze, 2006).

find answers on his or her own. Subsequently, the purpose of this paper is to elaborate on crimes in
terms of their types, causes, and effects to reduce them.
First of all, I would like to clarify the types of crimes in our society. There are three kinds of crimes:
Personal Crimes, Property Crimes, and Cybercrimes. "Personal crimes are violent crimes that result
in physical, emotional, or psychological harm to the victim depending on state laws" (Shoener).
Also, there are many kinds of personal crimes. The first one is assault and beating. Although
"assault" and "beating" are two personal crimes, many states merge them into the one crime of
"assault and beating"because most of the assault crimes are punctuated by beating and violence to
the victim for threatening him or her. The second is homicide: it is the ugliest form of crime because
of the loss of life whether intentionally or unintentionally. In a homicide, it doesn 't matter what the
tool is. Whether by weapon, fist or poison, the punishment will be the same dose no matter what
kind of tools they used. The third kind of personal crime is sexual abuse, often referred to as
molestation. It is defined as the undesirable touching of another, in a sexual manner, without
approval. Sexual abuse

The Problem Of Organized Crime Essay
Organized crime is a major problem around the world and only grows larger as time goes on. They
increase in size and influence daily and become more of a threat to anyone who has the displeasure
of interacting with them. These gangs, as they're often called, deal in weapons, drugs, and human
trafficking, selling means to kill people, ruin their lives, or just plainly sell people. Unfortunately
actions such as these are commonplace nowadays among gangs as they become more and more
ruthless. We need to rid ourselves of gangs, that much is clear. However, nowadays we're not in a
position to do so. Everyone in the country needs to understand the dangers of gangs and how they
can grow anywhere despite law enforcement. Because it's not the police that can do away with
gangs for good, it's the citizen 's' responsibility to ensure these gangs never grow and prosper. A
problem facing the common citizen regarding this problem is their perception of gangs, how they
view gangs and how they think gangs operate. To the average person when they think of a gang,
they think of some teenagers smoking on a street corner brandishing knives. And while that's
partially true, it's very far from the whole truth. When it comes to organized crime, there is no one
type of gang, there different types of gangs varying in their size, influence, and how dangerous they
are. At the bottom of the food chain is the street gangs consisting of a few dozen members at most
and, like the name implies, they

Social Problems from Crime, Criminal Justice,
Juvenile Delinquency, Prison System, and Incarceration
Billy Marquardt There are many different situations going on in the United States. What is going on
in our country becomes a social issues that the whole country will have to deal with. Crime, criminal
justice, juvenile delinquency, the prison system, and incarceration are all problems that are
prevailing in our media. Flaws in the system, violence, and outbreaks are making people more aware
of what is really going on around them. An uneasy feeling has started settling into American's
because of what is happening around them. Either media plays up situations misleading American's,
the people don't like the truths that they are hearing, or a combination of both. It has started a cause
and effect action. Something bad happens in our country and the people retaliate in peaceful or
violent ways. People are starting to treat each other differently because of skin color, job titles, and
gender. This is producing tension with every problematic occurrence.
Crime in the United States from 2014 to 2013 has decreased. According the FBI's page, the
definition of "violent crime" is, composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter,
rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Violent crimes are those offenses that involve force or threat
of force. These crimes have decreased from a little over 1.250,000 to an estimated 1,165,383
nationwide.(Lowe)

Crime Is A Serious Problem
Policing and fighting crime are two terms often associated together. Crime is a serious problem in
cities and a lot of people are affected by it. Victims, criminals and their families are touched by the
outcomes of crime. Crime has increased over the years and is continuing to do so. The city of
Memphis has experienced a great increase of crime. Memphis Police have developed initiatives to
reduce crime, using federally funded programs. Unfortunately, crime problems such as theft,
assaults and homicide have become irrepressible over the last three years. "The rate of homicide in
Memphis is more typical of cities of its size. Assaults were accounted for 65 percent of deaths in the
area."(Kellermann, Rivara & Lee,1996,p.1438–1440). The Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) is very
successful for keeping track with the rates of these crimes.
The environment, the personality of the perpetrator and genetics has all been factors to blame for
criminal behavior. Although, these factors have potential to play a role in the reasoning behind
criminal acts, they will have to be supported. Criminological theories can hold the context to support
the evidence of these factors. Understanding crime and developing strategies are the keys in taking
the step to initiate a strategic plan. When addressing theft, assaults and homicide, the initiatives will
have to be considered and provisions will be made for a successful reduction in crime. Addressing
the problems of theft, assaults and homicide a

The Problem Of Violent Crimes
Violent Crimes Introduction Violent crimes occur more than one could even imagine. However,
there is definitely a questionable aspect to these crimes within their court procedures. If one were to
take a closer look at specific court procedures of crimes having to deal with mental illnesses, it will
be determined that it is viewed differently oppose to a sane person. When taking mental illnesses
into consideration when referring to criminal behavior, there is an obvious difference between
actions. There begins to be a question of responsibility within these criminals. It is fair to say that
there is a difference with court procedures. The imperativeness of the courts is extremely important
when referring to any case. There are biological and social risk factors that pertain to any given case.
There is a question as to if these should be taken into consideration when enduring the court process
as an entirety. By taking a deeper look at the biological aspects within a case, the justice system will
be able to give more accurate sentences. Statement of the Problem This ongoing problem on
whether or not mental illnesses along with biological issues should be used within the court process
has been constantly debated about. The information on this subject may not always be as accurate as
needed in order to make decisions such as sentencing. The sentencing of a criminal can easily be a
life changer and if it is dependent on whether or not their mental illnesses are

Resolving the Social Problem of Crime
Resolving a Social Problem: As mentioned in the first assignment, one of the main social problems
in the modern society is crime, which is basically defined as an offense against public law. Since it
is a major social problem, crime has significant effects on victims, the society, and social
institutions. Crime is a multi–faceted social problem because it involves personal responsibility as
well as social, cultural, and political aspects that contribute to it. It is also a social problem that
should be understood from a social context because it does not occur in a social vacuum. Due to the
social nature of crime and its impact on the society, there are several organizations that seek to
address this social problem. These organizations range from governmental agencies to community
based organizations with different ways for addressing the problem. Some examples of
organizations committed to this social problem include National Organization for Victim Assistance
(NOVA) and Crime Prevention Coalition of America. Objectives of these Organizations: The
mission of National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) is to promote dignity and
compassion for individuals harmed by crime and crisis ("Nova Overview", n.d.). Therefore, the
organization is committed to addressing the social problem by focusing on victims of crime and
victims of crisis. National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) has been operating as a
private, not–for–profit, and charitable organization

The Problem Of Hate Crimes
"They say that boys will be boys, but what do we make of boys when they attempt to lynch another
child, or put on Ku Klux Klan outfits and burn a cross in the back yard?"(Children committing hate
crimes). This startling article by CNN caught the attention of many people across the United States
of America. The article also exposed a problem the United States is facing today: hate crimes. From
the astonishing number of active hate group organizations to the hate crimes affecting young people,
America has a major predicament. It is time for the US to wake up and face the major problem with
hate crimes. According to one source, teens and young adults are involved in and affected by hate
crimes more than many people realize. The study states that twelve percent of teens were victims of
hateful crimes (Children committing hate crimes). Another startling statistic is that thirty–six percent
of students have seen hateful inscriptions and scrawlings, known as hate graffiti, at their schools
(Children committing hate crimes). Those who have seen the profane and offensive –often hateful–
markings will usually ignore the graffiti because it either does not pertain to them, or they simply do
not care. However, when oneself is the subject of the message, it is very disheartening to see
something like that in textbooks and hallways of schools. It is even more disheartening to find out
that hate crimes are committed by one's own peers. An example of hate crimes committed by young

Problem Of Gun Crime
The major problems with gun crime occur because lots of guns are illegally resold. The Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms study recently claimed that "half of all gun seized from young
criminals were purchased legally by straw buyers and then resold." This suggests that the
problematic direct–buyers are mostly not criminals but straw buyers. With this fact, minimizing or
limiting resell firearms business is the main goal to deal with this strategy.
To minimize or limit any resell gun business, one of the best way is to put strict liability on resell
gun business. Since the government regulations and laws have worked well to prevent the direct sale
between the firm and criminal, the additional rule over first hand buyer can only be better.

Crime Is A Major Social And Political Problem Within Our...
Research Proposal
Introduction
Fear of crime is a major issue within our society with Farrell et al stating that 'it is commonplace to
assert that fear of crime has become a major social and political problem, perhaps bigger than crime
itself'. With Leeds being known as a high risk area for crime in the UK with Leeds University and
Leeds Beckett coming 6th and 7th respectively for the highest crime rate on The Complete
University Guide students here are likely to have a strong fear towards becoming a victim of crime.
Previous research has shown there are differences in the type of crimes that the different genders
fear becoming victims of. (Rountree 1998) This research aims to investigate those differences and
find out if they affect the lives of students in Leeds. The main aims are as follows:
To establish whether their are differences in gender and fear of crime in Leeds.
To know if these fears will affect a students life and behaviours.
Literature Review
Research in to students and fear of crime has found surprising results, with Universities considered
fairly safe, it is surprising that students report high levels of fear towards crime. (McConnell 1997)
As well as this high level of fear towards crime from students, previous research has shown us that
there are many differences in the male and female fear of crime. Females have been repeatedly
found to fear crime more than males (Fisher & Sloan, 2003) even though men are much more likely
to become a victim of crime

The Problem Of Crime And Crime
The way that people analyze crime has evolved throughout history and has many different forms.
Today, I am going to briefly explain some of the different theories that are used to study the subject
of crime and criminality. What I will be evaluating these theories against will be small scale
property crime such as theft. Anomie theory states that with the idea of the American dream and
economic success that the stress created by not meeting the "American Dream" standard creates
strain (Merton, 2013). Additionally, if social institutions are weak such as the family, then the
economic institution becomes dominant and creates an imbalance, which in turn leads to higher
crime rates (Merton, 2013). According to Messner (1982) crime has been theoretically linked to
poverty in both its subsistence and the relative deprivation that is conceptualized. This just adds
support to how not being able to achieve the "American Dream" can cause turmoil in the family life
and can lead to more criminality. When used to explain small scale property crime Anomie theory
could explains it strongly. If someone cannot meet the "American Dream" standard then they may
begin to pursue other means to meeting that goal. This could definitely lead to many different crimes
with property crime being one of them. You can't afford to go out and buy the American Dream. So
maybe stealing the American dream is the next best thing. Strain theory states that when a person
can't obtain success, then that person

The Problem Of Cyber Crime
Introduction
Qualified candidates are limited since, for those investigating or examining cyber–crime must be
highly trained specialists, requiring detective and technical skills, including knowledge of various IT
hardware and software, and forensic tools. Nevertheless, in the modern world computer or computer
related crime makes up a great amount of percentage of all the crimes happiness which is bound to
increase. The Office for Victim Assistance ensures that victims of crimes investigated by the FBI are
presented the opportunity to receive the services and notification as required by federal law
guidelines
Issues law enforcement must deal with regarding digital crime and terrorism.
The number of police agencies with advanced or computer crime unit has increased extensively over
the last several years, but the majority of these agencies serve large urban populations (Wolf, 2009).
Also, prosecutors and judges are turning out to be well versed in computer crime and the unique law
and vagaries inherent in these cases. Thus, it has been unclear how well the state and local law
enforcement agencies are equipped to handle these offenses.
For instance, a study of forensic examiners found that they are frequently overworked and
experience stress related to their work. Actually, for those who were interviewed, half of them felt
that they did not have the workforce to complete their tasks at work (Wolf, 2009). In addition,
assessors recognize that they need greater training

The Problem Of Hate Crimes
Abstract
Over the past decade school violence has been on the rise. School violence has always existed in
some form or another, whether it is a fight out on the playground or a stabbing in the parking lot.
However nothing got the nation 's attentions like on April 20, 1999, Columbine school shooting.
Ever since that day the nation wants to know what to do to protect the kids in this country. Violence
motivated by a bias against victims' characteristics which include race, religion, ethnic background,
national origin, gender, or sexual orientation, represents a serious threat to all communities. Experts
estimate that a bias–related crime is committed every 14 minutes. Criminal justice officials and state
policy makers need to realize that it is key to make or adjust hate crime legislation. This has been a
heated debate for centuries. The key to solving the ever–growing problem of hate crimes is more
hate crime legislation.
Crimes The news of Columbine was all over the TV, newspapers, and in every social aspect of life.
This left parents no choice but to discuss the incident with their children. After Columbine, there
seemed to be more and more reports of school violence, more shooting, bombings, and knives being
brought to school. A school is defined as "an institution for teaching and learning". However, today
's educational institutions include punishment, violence, and misbehavior. When we find ourselves
glued to the television because of another school

The purpose of this paper is to critique ?Crime is not a major problem in Australia?.
The following will outline the definition of crime in the context of Australia, discuss and analyse
crime measurement methodology and the ability for the results to be an accurate assessment and
reflection of crime, to examine and compare differing perspectives of crime, and to research the
effect the media has upon the perceptions of crime and whether it can accurately determine whether
crime is a major problem in Australia.
Crime has always been socially defined, determined by morals ethics and perceptions, and leads to
varying and competing views and comprehensive debate. It can be universally agreed that the
definition of crime in terms of legal parameters and also defining crimes in terms of sociological
definitions, can be argued to be the main to focuses when attempting to answer this question. It
relies on existing social and cultural norms.
A basic conclusion is that crime is an act, whether determined by Parliamentary Legislation or not,
that attracts a legal punishment which are offences against the community (Blackburn, 1993, p. 17)
and that it is a reflection of society?s beliefs and norms of that particular time (McSherry, 2010) .
The Legal definition of crime in complex but simply explained as ?crime is an activity that the state
prohibits by law and punishes? (The Australian Law Dictionary, 2015, p. 199). However, critics of
the legal definitions of crime believe that

Strategies for Alleviating the Gang Crime Problem Essay
Introduction
The definition of a gang crime by the law enforcement officials takes two dimensions but they
employ one of the definitions in order to measure and tackle this problem in the society. The first
definition considers gang–related all crimes committed by individuals who belong to a particular
gang without regard to the circumstances surrounding such crimes or the nature of the offense. This
therefore is a member–based definition of gang crime. Another but more restrictive definition is that
a gang crime is committed if and when such occurs as part of the function of a gang or for the
benefit of the gang and therefore is strictly gang–motivated. Based on the evidence that gang–
motivated crimes constitute more than half of gang ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Peer groups are unorganized and small groups of individuals who have a common background and
share the same space. Their involvement in crime is not at any significant level and therefore its
influence on the identity of the group is not important. Peer groups are the lowest level of gangs.
The intermediate level is comprised of more organized groups of young people in the streets whose
motive of participating in criminal activities is strongly attached to the identity of the group so that
the groups assign themselves names. This level therefore is made up of gangs.
Finally, there are the organized criminal groups whose motive of committing crimes is for personal
gains and this may likely be their main occupation. These organized criminal groups base their
operations in the illegal market place(le.ac.uk, n.d).Gang crime is an issue of concern which touches

  • 1. Examine and Assess the Usefulness of One of the Following... Examine and assess the usefulness of one of the following theories of crime and deviance in terms of explaining crime and the social problems in modern society. A subculture is a cultural subgroup. They are considered opposite from the mainstream culture because of their uniqueness. They form when the mainstream culture fails to meet the needs of a particular group of people. Subculture theories primarily focus on crime and Juvenile delinquency. Theorists believe that if this pattern of offending can be understood and controlled then it will break the transition from teenage offender into habitual criminal. Some of the theories which will be discussed today are developed from functionalism assuming that criminal activity is motivated by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Figures from the Crime survey for England and Wales have shown that 2.1 million violent incidents were recorded in 2011/2012. It's been estimated that young people aged 10–17 were responsible for 23% of police recorded crime. In 2010 equivalent to just over a million police recorded crimes. Considering other theorists who studied subcultures was Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin. Cloward was an American Sociologist and an activist. He influenced the strain theory of criminal behavior. Lloyd Ohlin was an American sociologist and criminologist who taught at Harvard law school, Columbia University and the university of Chicago. Over his career he studied the causes and effects of crime and punishment, especially as it related to youthful offenders and delinquents. This is seen as a functional perspective of subcultural behavior. Many working class youths who cannot gain status legitimately, become frustrated and therefore try to gain status through illegitimate. They create their own subculture and reject the norms and values of mainstream society. Richard Clowen in 1961 said, " The boy who joins a gang isn't in a rut. He has aspirations, but no place to go with them". Both theorists argue that delinquency resulted from the irresponsibility of youths as a symptom of poverty and the lack of alternative opportunities caused by poverty. The conditions underlying delinquency could be resolved through social programs in local communities that will help address the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Is Youth Crime A Problem To Society? Is youth crime really a problem to society? Young people have been a main focus in society. Since 1960 there has been an increase in youth crime which is the reason as to why there are major adult concerns (Newburn, 2013). "Government became more harsh and intrusive in dealing with young people who were seen to be a problem" (France, 2007, pg.19). Older generations perceive young people as having less morals and respect in comparison to what they did at their age (Newburn, 2013). In particular, society views the youth of today as troublemakers, lazy, untrustworthy and unreliable. There are different theories that provide an explanation between involvement in offending and different factors such as family factors and wider social factors which will be discussed below. There is debate whether youth crime is really a problem to society or just an issue that is constructed by society. It is argued that media has influenced society's views on this matter by categorising young people as 'folk devils' (Banks, 2013). Certain groups, episodes and people that pose a threat to society's values is when a moral panic takes place (Cohen, 1972). For example, this can be seen nowadays when there is no actual threat but old people get intimidated when they see large groups of young people hanging about on streets. These influences led to policy change, increasing the level of social control. This means that youth crime may be perceived as a moral panic rather than an actual problem. ... • 7. The Problem Of Crime Rates Overview of the Problem I currently the Chief of Police in Savannah, Georgia and the problem that our city in currently facing is an increase in the crime rate in the city especially in the area of violent crimes. Violent crime rose 8.8 percent in 2014 over the previous year with robberies and shooting accounting for most of those crimes. The city reported "32 homicides in 2014, which was two more than 2013, and the number of rapes increased from 49 to 64". The City Manager and City Council has informed me that these numbers are unacceptable and in an effort to control, the rising crime rate I propose the following measures (McCammon, 2015). Constraints and Lack of Resources One of the largest constraints due to lack of resources we face in controlling crime in the Savannah Police Department is the shortage of police officers. On any given week between the five different precincts there can be a shortage of 50 to 60 officers overall. As a result, the officers spend most of their time responding to 911 calls and therefore do not have time to staff their beats or practice crime prevention. This also does not allow them any time to interact with the public, which is an important part of crime prevention, and it can leave a precinct un–patrolled if they receive as few as three overlapping calls that require a back up as six officers can be all that is available during a short staff shift. In addition, it results in neglected citizens complaints as it leaves the officers little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Social Problem Of Crime This information analysis focuses on the social problem computer crime, but more specifically identity theft. In this paper, I analyzed six different articles from various sources. I chose cyber crime as my topic because I have an interest in computers and coding. I also like to watch documentaries and a television show on cybercrime scene investigations. Analyzing articles on this topic will help me develop further knowledge on this topic and how it is considered a social problem in our society. Computer crime refers to any violation of the law in which a computer is the target or means of criminal activity (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht, 2014, p.113). Computer crime is also known as cybercrime. Cybercrime continues to have far reaching effects because it affects individuals, companies, and organizations and is increasingly a problem in the globalized world we live in. This is because we rely so much on cell–phones, computers, and us many social network sites. Cybercrime is considered a social problem because it negatively affects a large group of people in our society. In 2014, there were 1.5 million cyber attacks worldwide ("IBM Cyber Security Intelligence Index," 2015, pg.13). One type of computer crime is identity theft. Identity theft is the use of someone else's personal information to obtain credit or other economic rewards (Mooney, et al, 2014, pg.113). Identity theft first became a crime in 1998, when Congress passed the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Problem Of Crime And Crime Before we can discuss the causes of crime, it is first necessary to determine what we mean by the word "crime". The legal definition of crime refers to "an action or omission which constitutes an offence" and involves some sort of punishment – but as we will go on to explore, this definition fails to capture the full complexity of the concept of crime. Likewise, the question of "what causes crime" has generated a multifocal body of criminological work. This paper will demonstrate that it is virtually impossible to pinpoint a single cause of crime that is applicable across all categories of crime, ranging from sexual offences to white–collar crime, and although existing theories do give us a good foundation for investigation, they are limited in this sense. This discussion will begin with a brief unpacking of our conception of "crime", followed by an evaluation of various crime theories and perspectives with particular focus on male violence as a cause of crime, an area that took criminologists twenty years to begin exploring after feminist pressure. The legal definition of crime simply points to punishable offences in statute and takes no account of crime as a "social construction" – this is the idea that it is not some quality of the act that renders it criminal, rather it is the reaction of society, a viewpoint central to Becker's Labelling Theory . What we understand as "crime" is not inherently criminal and has been shaped by society. As Muncie asserts, "crime has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Everyday there is always a crime story–taking place in the news or in the daily newspaper. It is difficult for individuals to not be drawn to negativity happening in their community. There are many different ideas on how to solve the crime problems that are happening in our country. First we need to have stricter punishment and stick to it for all criminals. Many of the criminals are getting off with little to no punishment, which sometimes they become repeat offenders. With some criminals having good behavior while serving time, the justice system are allowing them be released early from confinement and out on parole. This is unacceptable. If they committed ... • 15. The Problem Of Violent Crime Violent crime is a completely human characteristic. It has dominated our history books, been sensationalized by the media and created a pervasive fear which dominates our culture. Is there a way to possibly prevent violent crime? Neurocriminology, a classification of criminology centered on neuroscience and its relationship between the causes and cures of crime, may have the answer to that question. Adrian Raine, a criminal psychologist for more than thirty years, proposes that criminal behavior may have its origins in heredity and biology and future criminal tendencies can be predicted in children. Professor Raine's discoveries can potentially thwart violent crime activity by identifying genetic markers which are characteristic of violent offenders. If so, what are the moral and ethical dilemmas society will now have to contend with when tagging certain individuals as natural–born killers? Despite this milestone discovery, many questions stills persist such as how society will react. In addition, though potential criminal behavior may be prevented by examining genetic markers, the moral and ethical implications of neurocriminology, may lead to discrimination and the further criminalization of poverty. Human beings are notorious for discrimination. They will use any means possible to create a case for justified marginalization; race, sexual orientation, appearance, and physical or mental disability. Neurocriminology may be just another apparatus in the arsenal of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Problem Of Violent Crime 1.0 INTRODUCTION Violent crime is a serious problem and could not to be neglected in present society. It means all incidents of wounding and assault with or without injury in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (ONS, 2015). The crime rate in Liverpool was about 90.86 per 1000 population in police record by the end of June 2015 (HO, 2015). According to Liverpool City Council (2015), the violence rate per 1000 population was increase 16.6% from 2013 to 2014 and reach 10.2 from April 2014 to March 2015, higher than other crime. At the same time, the number in 1000 people that experience personal robbery was about 485, not all robberies would be reported to the police so maybe the real condition was graver. Hence, violence and robbery continue to be of increasing concern. In order to descend violent crime, arrange more police on the street might be a suitable option. Many researchers found this solution lead to the steady decline of crime rate (Ratcliffe et al, 2011). However, the expensive cost might limit the scale of this method. Correctional education is also an effectively solution of offender but take a long time. A combined system of hotspot policing and prison education may be possible if care is reducing crime rate. Therefore, this report will compare the feasibility of police patrol and correctional education in terms of cost and effectiveness, thereby exploring the more viable method to reduce violent crime in Liverpool. 2.0 BACKGROUNG Liverpool is a city in ... The term "civil law" referring to a legal system should not be confused with "civil law" as a group of legal subjects distinct from criminal or public law. A third type of legal system–accepted by some countries without separation of church and state–is religious law, based on scriptures. The specific system that a country is ruled by is often determined by its history, connections with other countries, or its adherence to international standards. The sources that jurisdictions adopt as authoritatively binding are the defining features of any legal system. Yet classification is a matter of form ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's easy to act on anger, greed, revenge or any of highlighted above, but it takes courage and strength to determine that there is something more important than that. There are two core reasons why weakness prevails with some: 1) Lack of faith, not believing enough in the power of one's own internal weapons (against inner demons), such as: courage, tolerance, understanding, forgiveness, mercy, honesty, sincerity, integrity, honor, modesty, humbleness, generosity, love, compassion, kindness, detachment, patience, self–discipline, temperance, etc. As a result of not trusting inner resources, there is no enough motivation to develop them and use them. Another aspect of my design problem is taking such an impactful event that occurred over the span of many years and compacting the story properly. I previously wrote a short story about the brutal rape and murder of my cousin, Quenette Shehane. Although it is a terrible event, a lot of good came out of it through my great–aunt, Miriam Shehane, advocating for victims rights with her organization, Victims Against Crime and Leniency (V.O.C.A.L.). • 23. The Problem Of Teenage Crime Teenage crime is a very important problem that the united states is facing these days. It erodes our country economically and morally. The government, along with parents are still trying to come up with a solution to this international problem. Rising aggression, especially among teenagers is very harmful to the society as a whole, and their reasons behind this are more compound and more complex then we could ever imagine. The majority of Crimes committed by teenagers includes gang violence, theft, assault and even murder. The most important factors that trigger these teens to commit these acts are their family life, media, and the collapse of their community. Family conditions proved to be a direct effect on a teenager 's behavior. Positive family environments provide a strong base for the development of a child. From the very first years, a child 's development and the way they act are influenced by the environment they encounter. Whenever a teenager isn 't getting the right support needed, they often turn to acts of violence to get their parents attention or let out their aggression from their inner feelings. living in a dysfunctional household where everything is unstable and the family lives a transient lifestyle, they often move around and aren 't stable enough to stay in one place. When this happens there are greater risks of the teen dropping out of school and they then become bored and run the streets and the streets often lead them to hanging with the ... • 27. The Problem Of Crime Rate Abstract Crime is a big problem in the world. Many believe that nothing can be done to prevent it. The crime rates are increasing rapidly all around the world. Crime is not easy to completely remove from our society. For many years Scientist and psychologists have argued over whether upbringing forms of a child's behavior or whether they are born with a personality disorder, or could it be the way their brain is set up or their body type? Society may never really know all the causes of this criminal behavior. With all the disagreement going on with the subject on "the causes of criminals", the controversial question would be "Are criminals born, or made?" There are so many reasons behind the increased crime rate. I believe to figure out why the crime rate is rapidly increasing, it is important to figure out the main cause and treat it. With proper measures like straight laws, sufficient punishments, good moral and education, we may be able to avoid the crimes to a certain extent. In today society, crime rate is increasingly on the rise. The crimes that are being caused are stealing, poverty, desperation, kidnap, rape, robbery, physical fighting, substance abuse, and many other crimes that are not mentioned. For many years it has been said that a person's parents are the root to make the person they become as an adult. A child's role model would mainly be their parents, but as a person's age and grows older. They start to have other influence in their lives. Such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Problem Of White Collar Crime White collar crime is a problem that we do not really see the full extent of; Geis and Stotland (1980) present the argument that the seriousness of victimisation caused by many corporations is much greater than that caused by common crimes however the public seem much less interested and concerned with white collar crime. Some traditional criminological theories have attempted to prove that white collar crime is not a different and separate phenomenon to common, every day crime. Robert Merton's Strain Theory is applied to everyday crime, however his theory was in fact set up as an economic theory that he believed could explain all types of corporate crimes as well as traditional crimes. Gottfredson and Hirschi also provided what they understood to be a 'General Theory of Crime' with Control Theory, which they also believed to be relevant to both white collar and traditional crimes. I am going to discuss these theories in detail and show how they do, and do not provide sufficient explanations of white collar crimes. I am also going to include Organizational Theory in my discussion which looks at the issue of understanding crime in a different way. Traditional theories such as strain theory and control theory form a certain understanding of the issue, on the contrary some argue that these theories are not appropriate and need twisting to fit the issue, some suggesting a completely separate way of thinking is needed to understand white collar and corporate crime. • 31. Should Sociologists Attempt To Combat The Social Problem... Distinguish between crime as a social and sociological problem. To what extent should sociologists attempt to combat the social problem of crime? Although similar in most senses, social and sociological problems have completely different meanings. A social problem is an issue that exists within a society, which individuals are opposed to. A sociological problem on the other hand is an issue that arises and is discovered by sociologists due to sociological research. It is a violation of social norm, and therefore crime can also be described as an act of deviance. Deviance can be both a minor or major offence. So how do sociologists go about combatting this problem? An act of Social control can be defined broadly as an organized action intended to change people's behaviour (Innes 2003). The fundamental goal of social control is to maintain social order and the everyday behaviours on which individuals base their lives. One method for implementing rules are through sanctions. Sanctions can be positive and also negative. Positive sanctions are prizes given for fitting in with standards. Negative sanctions are disciplines for disregarding standards. Black (1976) distinguishes four key styles of social control, each of which characterizes deviance and the proper reaction to it in an alternate way. Penal social control capacities by denying certain social practices and reacting to infringement with discipline. Compensatory social control obliges a wrongdoer to pay a casualty to make up for a mischief submitted. Therapeutic social control includes the utilization of treatment to return people to a typical state. • 35. The Problem Of High Crime Rate From a lot of our class discussions, as well as interactions from with other students on campus I feel that a prevalent issue both to our school, and citizens of the downtown Tampa area in general is safety. As students on campus we receive almost weekly emails from the school's security department informing us somebody, usually a student, getting robbed or accosted in some way by an unknown person and that police are investigating. Rarely do we get emails saying the person was caught, this has lead to some students to begin to feel unsafe in the areas around campus. So the issue is how to lower crime rate in the area, and increase the safeness for citizens and for students in particular. The first step in addressing this problem is figuring out what is happening. The first thing would be to look up the crime reports from both the university security and Tampa police department in the areas surrounding the school. The first thing this helps us determine is if there has been a rise in crime in recent years or if it is an ongoing problem. If there is a rise we can look at the areas where the rise occurred and focus there, if not we know problem is for the area as a whole. Second by looking at the crime reports we can look at both the areas where the crimes are happing and the situations that resulted in the incident. Similar to a piece of furniture, people with money try to refurbish it and make it look new while taking away the dinginess. However with neighborhoods it is not this simple. Many people are quick to assume that by gentrifying a neighborhood, the amount of crime will decrease and this is not a far–fetched thought. It seems self explanatory– large amounts of crime occur in low–income neighborhoods therefore if higher income residents and homes replace those poorer residents and homes, the large amounts of crime will no longer exist. Even when coffee shops and gang heavy neighborhoods "...cross paths in a neighborhood, one high rank will not over come the other high rank..." (580). Both of these types of gentrification, in which their was no government involvement, showed how gentrification can reduce the rates of crime, specifically gang related homicides. Contrary to the types of gentrification mentioned above, when it came to the state involved gentrification, it was a different story than the other two types. The study proved though you can invade it, you cannot simply take away a criminals territory to decrease crime. State involved gentrification in this study was the demolition of public housing and this process "significantly increased gang homicide over time" (584). Public housing is housing sponsored by the government and because the government doesn't always consider what is best for poorer neighborhoods, the homes are often times run down and located in crime heavy areas. The demolition of these homes causes "an immediate effect of displacement and gang turf disruption on gang violence" (578). This demolition left people without territories and really nowhere to go, something that increased homicides. In addition to increasing gang related homicides, removing housing and territories causes "untended persons and property are fair game for plunder" (Skogan 216). • 39. The Problem Of Crime And Gun Violence Although it seems like the problem of crime and gun violence is never approached or discussed, there are leaders within America tirelessly working to find a solution to help decrease crime. Alex Yablon puts it like this in his article on The Trace, saying "the lack of progress on the federal level should not be confused with a lack of proposed solutions to America 's gun violence epidemic – there are plenty of those, on both sides of the table." Yablon means there are some bills that would limit the access to guns as well as bills that would prevent the enforcement of restrictions on guns. However, he is not the only one to have an opinion of how the government is viewing crime and gun violence. John Donohue, in his article Gun Control: What We can learn from other Advanced Countries, points out that besides being the world leader in the amount of guns available to citizens, the U.S. does not seem to be making much progress on finding a solution. Donohue also goes on to say that, "the stricter gun laws of other 'advanced countries' have restrained homicidal violence, suicides and gun accidents," despite there being protest by the armed citizens (Newsweek Magazine Web). These two men each hold different viewpoints when it comes to how they think crime and gun violence is being addressed by the government, however, each of their viewpoints presents a valid opinion in regards to the issue. First, the researchers reviewed the literature available on the components that have influenced the considerable increases of incarcerated persons with severe mental illness (SMI). Secondly, they analyzed the Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2004 (MIOTCRA), and evaluated if, since its inception, has reduced the problems associated with incarcerated persons with SMI. They also recognized the need for evidence–based programs, and additional research to investigate the actual effectiveness of MHC's and public mental health services. Analysis and Evaluation The issue chosen by the researchers, is a relevant issue facing the criminal justice system. The predominance of mental health problems among incarcerated persons in both prisons and jails present major problems for each component of the criminal justice system; law enforcement, courts, and corrections. The entire criminal justice system is negatively impacted and overburdened by untreated mental illness. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than half of all prison and jail inmates have a mental health problem (James & Glaze, 2006). First of all, I would like to clarify the types of crimes in our society. There are three kinds of crimes: Personal Crimes, Property Crimes, and Cybercrimes. "Personal crimes are violent crimes that result in physical, emotional, or psychological harm to the victim depending on state laws" (Shoener). Also, there are many kinds of personal crimes. The first one is assault and beating. Although "assault" and "beating" are two personal crimes, many states merge them into the one crime of "assault and beating"because most of the assault crimes are punctuated by beating and violence to the victim for threatening him or her. The second is homicide: it is the ugliest form of crime because of the loss of life whether intentionally or unintentionally. In a homicide, it doesn 't matter what the tool is. They increase in size and influence daily and become more of a threat to anyone who has the displeasure of interacting with them. These gangs, as they're often called, deal in weapons, drugs, and human trafficking, selling means to kill people, ruin their lives, or just plainly sell people. Unfortunately actions such as these are commonplace nowadays among gangs as they become more and more ruthless. We need to rid ourselves of gangs, that much is clear. However, nowadays we're not in a position to do so. Everyone in the country needs to understand the dangers of gangs and how they can grow anywhere despite law enforcement. Because it's not the police that can do away with gangs for good, it's the citizen 's' responsibility to ensure these gangs never grow and prosper. A problem facing the common citizen regarding this problem is their perception of gangs, how they view gangs and how they think gangs operate. To the average person when they think of a gang, they think of some teenagers smoking on a street corner brandishing knives. And while that's partially true, it's very far from the whole truth. When it comes to organized crime, there is no one type of gang, there different types of gangs varying in their size, influence, and how dangerous they are. Victims, criminals and their families are touched by the outcomes of crime. Crime has increased over the years and is continuing to do so. The city of Memphis has experienced a great increase of crime. Memphis Police have developed initiatives to reduce crime, using federally funded programs. Unfortunately, crime problems such as theft, assaults and homicide have become irrepressible over the last three years. "The rate of homicide in Memphis is more typical of cities of its size. Assaults were accounted for 65 percent of deaths in the area."(Kellermann, Rivara & Lee,1996,p.1438–1440). The Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) is very successful for keeping track with the rates of these crimes. The environment, the personality of the perpetrator and genetics has all been factors to blame for criminal behavior. Although, these factors have potential to play a role in the reasoning behind criminal acts, they will have to be supported. Criminological theories can hold the context to support the evidence of these factors. Understanding crime and developing strategies are the keys in taking the step to initiate a strategic plan. When addressing theft, assaults and homicide, the initiatives will have to be considered and provisions will be made for a successful reduction in crime. Another startling statistic is that thirty–six percent of students have seen hateful inscriptions and scrawlings, known as hate graffiti, at their schools (Children committing hate crimes). Those who have seen the profane and offensive –often hateful– markings will usually ignore the graffiti because it either does not pertain to them, or they simply do not care. • 67. The Problem Of Crime And Crime The way that people analyze crime has evolved throughout history and has many different forms. Today, I am going to briefly explain some of the different theories that are used to study the subject of crime and criminality. What I will be evaluating these theories against will be small scale property crime such as theft. Anomie theory states that with the idea of the American dream and economic success that the stress created by not meeting the "American Dream" standard creates strain (Merton, 2013). Additionally, if social institutions are weak such as the family, then the economic institution becomes dominant and creates an imbalance, which in turn leads to higher crime rates (Merton, 2013). According to Messner (1982) crime has been theoretically linked to poverty in both its subsistence and the relative deprivation that is conceptualized. This just adds support to how not being able to achieve the "American Dream" can cause turmoil in the family life and can lead to more criminality. When used to explain small scale property crime Anomie theory could explains it strongly. If someone cannot meet the "American Dream" standard then they may begin to pursue other means to meeting that goal. This could definitely lead to many different crimes with property crime being one of them. You can't afford to go out and buy the American Dream. School violence has always existed in some form or another, whether it is a fight out on the playground or a stabbing in the parking lot. However nothing got the nation 's attentions like on April 20, 1999, Columbine school shooting. Ever since that day the nation wants to know what to do to protect the kids in this country. Violence motivated by a bias against victims' characteristics which include race, religion, ethnic background, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation, represents a serious threat to all communities. This therefore is a member–based definition of gang crime.
