Chromatography

  1. 1. Prepared by Eric Ittah
  2. 2. Chromatography is a process that involves the separation of mixtures into their respective components to identify, study or purify the mixture or components.
  3. 3. Chromatography is derived from the Greek word “Chroma”, meaning colors and “Graphein” which means to write.
  4. 4. • Pharmaceutical industry • Healthcare services • Research and Analysis • Forensics Science
  5. 5. • Gas • Paper • Liquid • Affinity • Ion Exchange • Partition • Adsorption
  6. 6. Separation of compounds that can be vaporized without decomposition. It can be used to prepare pure compounds from a mixture.
  7. 7. Paper chromatography is an analytical method used to separate and identify mixtures that can be colored, mainly the pigments.
  8. 8. Liquid chromatography is used to separate ions and molecules that are dissolved in a solvent.
  9. 9. Affinity chromatography is a method of separating biochemical mixtures based on a highly specific interaction .
  10. 10. Ion exchange chromatography is a process that allows the separation of ions and polar molecules based on their charge.
  11. 11. Partition chromatography is a method of separating mixtures according to their different partition coefficients.
  12. 12. Adsorption chromatography is a process of separating mixtures in which solute molecules bond directly to the surface of the stationary phase.
