OUR COMMUNITY GOALThis year our school community will work together to createan environment where all students and staff members feelrespected and safe. Each month we will learn how to recognize different types of“mean spirited” behaviors and techniques to help you stoppeople who are mean to you or your peers.TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE OUR SCHOOL A “MEAN FREE”ZONE.
WHY DO BYSTANDERS JUST STAND AROUND AND WATCH? Here are some possible reasons:*The bully is someone other people look up to and want to hang out with.*They want to "side" with the bully because to do that makes them feel strong. Sidingwith the bullys victim, on the other hand, would make them feel weak.*Theyre entertained by the bullying.*They dont think speaking up will help.*Theyre afraid that if they say something, the bully will turn on them.*Watching the bullying is a way to bully "vicariously." This means that they feel liketheyre getting their frustrations out by hurting someone even though theyre not doingthe hurting, just watching the hurting.
TELL THE BULLY TO STOP ! * Examples: "Cut it out!", "Thats not funny!", "Howd you like it if someone did that to you?” * Let the bully know that what he or she is doing is stupid and mean. WALK AWAY AND GET HELP! *If you feel like you cant speak up, walk away from the situation and tell the nearest adult. Get them to come help. *This is not snitching ! MAKE SURE THE KID WHO IS GETTING BULLIED TELLS AN ADULT! * Offer to go with him or her if it will help. INVOLVE AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE! * Parents, teachers, school counselors, Mrs. Richters and Mrs.Youngberg.
DON’T BECOME A BYSTANDER…Treat others the way you would like to be treated.Stand up for someone when he or she needs it, andwhen you need it, someone will stand up for you!
