7 2 biome location

  1. 1. 7-2 BIOME LOCATION
  2. 2. LEARNING GOAL: HOW DOES CLIMATE AFFECT THE NATURE AND LOCATION OF BIOMES?
  3. 3. Cold Temperate desert Cold Desert Tropical Desert Temperate grassland Tropical grassland (savanna) Scrubland Chaparral Evergreen coniferous forest Arctic tundra Temperate deciduous forest Tropical rain forest Fig. 7-10, p. 129 Hot Wet Dry
  4. 4. Latitude Tropical Forest Deciduous Forest Coniferous Forest Tundra (herbs, lichen s, mosses) Polar ice and snow Elevation Mountain ice and snow Tundra (herbs, lichens, mosses) Coniferous Forest Deciduous Forest Tropical Forest Stepped Art Fig. 7-9, p. 129
  5. 5. TERRESTRIAL BIOMES DESERTS GRASSLANDS FORESTS 1. Tropical desert 4. Savanna 7. Tropical rain forest 2. Temperate desert 5. Prairie 8. Deciduous forest 3. Cold desert 6. Tundra 9. Coniferous forest
  6. 6. TYPES OF DESERTS  1. Tropical Deserts:  Examples: Sahara & Namiba (Africa)  Hot and dry most of the year/ Cold at night  Very little precipitation!!!  Few plants , mostly rocks and sand
  7. 7. 2. TEMPERATE DESERTS  Example: Mojave (Southern California)  Hot day / Cold at night - also cold in winter  Little precipitation – more than tropical desert  Sparse vegetation – shrubs, cacti, low diversity
  8. 8. 3. COLD DESERT  Example: Gobi (Mongolia)  Winter cold / summer warm (not hot) – low precip.
  9. 9. DESERT ADAPTATIONS Desert survival  Beat the heat & Conserve water
  10. 10. DESERT ADAPTATIONS Plants have evolved survival strategies  Drop leaves (dormant), succulent (fleshy), no leaves, spines, tap root, wide shallow roots, wax coating.
  11. 11. DESERT ADAPTATIONS Animals have own special adaptations  Small, burrow, come out at night or early morning, dormant during drought, store water in fat, thick scales, dry feces
