  2. 3. Searching On The Net <ul><li>There are lots of search engines on the net: Google, Yahoo, Altavista, Hotbot, Lycos, MSN Search… etc. </li></ul>
  3. 5. Searching On The Net <ul><li>There are lots of things we need to search on the net: Homeworks, projects, works, hobbies, fun… </li></ul>
  4. 6. The Point <ul><li>We should know two things to find what we really need </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Choosing right words </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Choosing right search engine(s) </li></ul></ul>
  5. 7. Choosing Right Words <ul><li>Try to find: “Keywords” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Keep it simple. No tags! </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>They must be the most important words of your work. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>One or two… If really needed three words please… </li></ul></ul>
  6. 8. Choosing Right Words <ul><li>Specify your search: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>There might be millions of results. So specify and search again. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Maybe you need more keywords </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Attention: Tags like “to”, “and”, “by” don’t count as words. </li></ul>

Choosing Right Words <ul><li>For example you need the learn about a pill that makes people thin, burns fat and you remember the professor that developed the pill is a German man. </li></ul><ul><li>Lets analyse and simplify the situation. There is a “pill” makes people “thin” burns “fat” and they is a “German” professor. </li></ul><ul><li>If we use these keywords, we can found what we want easier: pill thin fat german </li></ul>
  8. 10. Choosing Right Search Engine <ul><li>On Tuesday, March 23, 2004, WebSideStory examined a sample of over 25 million visits and found that Google had the top share of search referrals, 40.9 percent. It was followed by Yahoo at 27.4 percent, then MSN at 19.6 percent: </li></ul>
  9. 11. Choosing Right Search Engine <ul><li>Trend data shows how all three search sites performed for the corresponding Tuesday over four years. Not surprisingly, Google appears as a giant success gaining dissatisfied users from Yahoo, AltaVista, Excite and Infoseek: </li></ul>
  10. 12. Choosing Right Search Engine <ul><li>In order for your site to be indexed by a search engine, the engine has to find you! Almost 60% of the internet is not indexed by search engines (03.2005) </li></ul><ul><li>So do not use only one search engine. </li></ul>
  11. 13. Determine What You Need <ul><li>Text file </li></ul><ul><li>A Presentation </li></ul><ul><li>Image file </li></ul><ul><li>Music file </li></ul><ul><li>Video file </li></ul><ul><li>A Map </li></ul><ul><li>Cracks for softwares </li></ul>

Searching Text Files <ul><li>Google is so good for text search. </li></ul><ul><li>Specify your search with “Advanced Search” </li></ul><ul><li>Try MSN Library for academic research. </li></ul><ul><li>If you need an e-book search by adding “pdf” to your keywords. “.PDF” extension means the file is an Adobe Acrobat Reader file. It’s a standart for e-books. </li></ul><ul><li>Try other engines if you still didn’t find. </li></ul>
  13. 20. Searching Presentation <ul><li>“ .ppt” extension means the file is a Microsoft Office Power Point file. </li></ul><ul><li>Use “ppt” after your keywords </li></ul>
  14. 23. Searching An Image File <ul><li>I recommend “Google Images” with right keywords. </li></ul><ul><li>Click on size that you need. </li></ul><ul><li>Specify your search with “Advanced Search” </li></ul>

  16. 27. Searching Music File <ul><li>Altavista has a mp3&audio search engine. </li></ul><ul><li>Use peer to peer (P2P) sharing programs for exact results: Kazaa, iMesh, Limewire… </li></ul><ul><li> for foreign music files. </li></ul><ul><li>,… for Turkish music files. </li></ul>
  17. 31. Searching For Video File <ul><li>Yahoo and Altavista has a huge video library. </li></ul><ul><li> has a huge archive. Just can be watched via Google Video software, can’t record :( </li></ul><ul><li>For illegal DVDs, DivX files use P2P softwares. </li></ul>
