Introduction to QGIS

  1. 1. Intro to QGIS Erich Purpur March 27, 2018 434 924 1557
  2. 2. Who am I? -Erich Purpur -Librarian in Research Data Services (RDS) -Brown Science/Engineering Library -Previous GIS experience
  3. 3. What we will do today -GIS overview -QGIS overview -QGIS hands-on -QGIS troubleshooting online
  4. 4. Limitations of this presentation -Limited time -Not specific to your needs
  5. 5. What is GIS? -A computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced information What does this mean? -GIS is a data visualization tool used for analyzing spatial relationships and patterns between objects. You can discover and communicate meaningful patterns in your data -The output is usually a map but the power lies in the data behind the image -GIS skills are a literacy
  6. 6. What is QGIS? -Free and Open Source GIS software -Open source competitor to ESRI
  7. 7. Other Open Source or Free GIS -GRASS GIS -popular for academics because you can tailor and site code in publications -IDRISI -for really high level raster image processing -Smallworld by General Electric -specifically tailored to utility companies -Google Earth/ Google Maps/ Google MyMap -if you just need to show where stuff is -R -for data scientists. Some mapping and graphics functionality
  8. 8. Why use QGIS? -Because it is free -Linux and Mac compatible -Because you are a fan of open source/ a developer -Maybe you are an ESRI hater?
  9. 9. What can you do with it? -Pretty much all the things you can do with ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro -different functionality because people build their own if the need it/want it -same file types as ArcGIS, import between them
  10. 10. What can’t you do with it? -No ArcGIS online equivalent -Probably lacking some functionality -high end raster processing
  11. 11. How to learn to use QGIS -Google is your friend. Ask Google -Books, Blogs, etc - -Learning QGIS 2.0 – Anita Graser -Big user community online - support documentation - -you can ask me for help
  12. 12. Questions? Erich Purpur 434 924 1557 Brown Science/Engineering Library I046
