Who am I?
-Librarian in Research Data Services (RDS)
-Brown Science/Engineering Library
-Previous GIS experience
What we will do today
-QGIS troubleshooting online
Limitations of this presentation
-Not specific to your needs
What is GIS?
-A computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying
geographically referenced information
What does this mean?
-GIS is a data visualization tool used for analyzing spatial relationships and patterns between objects.
You can discover and communicate meaningful patterns in your data
-The output is usually a map but the power lies in the data behind the image
-GIS skills are a literacy
What is QGIS?
-Free and Open Source GIS software
-Open source competitor to ESRI
Other Open Source or Free GIS
-popular for academics because you can tailor and site code in publications
-for really high level raster image processing
-Smallworld by General Electric
-specifically tailored to utility companies
-Google Earth/ Google Maps/ Google MyMap
-if you just need to show where stuff is
-for data scientists. Some mapping and graphics functionality
Why use QGIS?
-Because it is free
-Linux and Mac compatible
-Because you are a fan of open source/ a developer
-Maybe you are an ESRI hater?
What can you do with it?
-Pretty much all the things you can do with ArcMap or
-different functionality because people build their own if the
need it/want it
-same file types as ArcGIS, import between them
What can’t you do with it?
-No ArcGIS online equivalent
-Probably lacking some functionality
-high end raster processing
How to learn to use QGIS
-Google is your friend. Ask Google
-Books, Blogs, etc
-Learning QGIS 2.0 – Anita Graser
-Big user community online
-qgis.org support documentation
-you can ask me for help
