Designing Second Life Spaces for Teachers

 1. 1. Committee report SL Teacher Lounge: Planning & Logistics Committee Created by teachers and pre-service teachers in the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Empire State College, fall 2008
 2. 2. What should this space look like and where should it be on the ESC island?

Design an area that is specific for lounging and collaborating. Redesign with a round seating arrangement to be more comfortable and conducive for group work (seats like that at ISTE island).

Modification of the “prison-like” building at the science center. This building is not visited often possibly due to its appearance.

Make more aesthetically pleasing. Include paths, trails, walkways, and boardwalks.

Use of teleporting discs so visitors can quickly get around the island.

 3. 3.

Create science booths similar to those on the NASA island. Booth should be informational in nature, but oriented in a way that they are easily approachable and easy to navigate. The arrangement of the booths is welcoming and un-intimidating.

More signage to clearly mark locations, but keep them simple, but informative. Too much writing can be hard to read and take a while to resonate.

What should this space look like and where should it be on the ESC island? Continued Too cluttered---overwhelming and confusing
 4. 4. What should we do to improve the MAT Science Center?

Have open discussion room with times posted so educators can get together to discuss issues and ideas. Meeting times and focuses may include the following: first year teachers, classroom management, inquiry based lesson ideas.

Sigma Aldrich has a lecture hall with a detailed schedule posted outside. The schedule outlines when meeting/lectures will be held and what topics are going to be covered. This is a great feature that we could incorporate into ESC MAT Island. Having a traditional lecture hall setting might help cut down on confusion when newcomers explore and meet in SL.

 5. 5. What should we do to improve the MAT Science Center? Continued

Mapping and navigation is not helpful and resources are hard to locate at most SL islands and sites. ESC should have a “You Are Here” map with access and links to its various areas.

Make student resources easier to find. Possibly provide a road map to avoid wandering around.

Include “library” with lesson plans. Keeping a traditional feel to help people feel comfortable. (i.e. file cabinets with lesson plans)

 6. 6. How should we advertise this space

Include our name in the list of universities at ISTE Island

Revise search terms in Second Life so that we can be easily found through general inquiry.

Post a link to SL on the front page of ANGEL.

Advertise SL and Science Center space through periodic newsletters sent out by ESC.

 7. 7. What recommendations do you have to the Content Committee for uses of this space

Include Lesson sharing

Inquiry based lesson ideas

Classroom demonstrations ideas

Teacher “flea market”

Trade/swap classroom resources

Resource list for classroom materials

Donations wanted/donations to give
