2. Background
• HIV are still increasing in China
• The main transmission route from injecting
drug use to sexual contact
• Newly infected HIV are found mostly
amongst men who have sex with men
• The population of MSM are estimated
huge in China
• Many pilot studies show high risk behavior
among MSM in China

3. What we did
• MSM Mapping based on the previous pilot
studies in Guangzhou (Gz)
• Seeds selection: 9 selected according to the
geography, edu, place usually hang around, and
willingness, etc
• 3 coupons with single recruitment incentive
• Questionnaire based person-to-person interview
and post-interveiw counseling
• blood sampling and testing for HIV,Syphilis,
HBV and HCV

5. What we found
• The demographic equilibrium was
obtained at wave 17~19;
• The MSM were young, floating, and not
highly educated and most homosexual
• risk behaviors were popular: early age of
1st homosex, commercial sex, and drug
abuse
• Low rate of previous HIV testing: 7%

7. We conclude
• MSM can be reached and recruited
through long chain referral approach
• RDS can be applied into HIV/STIs study
among MSM in Guangzhou,China
• The sample by RDS are more significant
for HIV control because it can access the
more risky targets than convenient sample
