  1. Moneyball is my favourite baseball movie. Because it’s not about baseball. It’s about defeating the irrational assumptions that cloud business logic and decision-making. Communications can also become irrational because it’s all about biases so deep they’re really hard to see.
  2. If you can’t answer the win/run question, you need to spend some time developing a strategy that aligns with your organization’s goals.
  3. There’s a brilliant scene where Billy Beane, GM of the Oakland A’s, sits down with his scouts to try and convince them the way they pick players is irrational. Make sure your process is not equally irrational.
  4. You don’t want to be the “50 feet of crap; and then there’s us.” Part of that means understanding your place within your sector and working within your means.
  5. Be prepared to spend some time reflecting on what’s happening as it’s happening. Don’t invest more resources or time in strategies that aren’t working.
  6. Why re-invent the wheel? Billy Beane doesn’t – he finds an expert and acquires his know-how. Luckily, the KMb folks at York are pretty open about sharing their expertise.
  7. WaveCheck is an attempt to change the funding game for very promising, late-stage medical techin MI’s portfolio. Crowdfunding is a huge tool of growing importance in our landscape.
