  5. 5. The Nature of the Holy SpiritJohn 16:13-1513 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he willguide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own;he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell youwhat is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me bytaking from what is mine and making it known to you.15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why Isaid the Spirit will take from what is mine and make itknown to you.

  9. 9. The Holy Spirit inthe Old Testament
  10. 10. Gen 1:22 Now the earth was formless and empty, darknesswas over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit ofGod was hovering over the waters.Num 11:16-1716 The LORD said to Moses: "Bring me seventy ofIsraels elders who are known to you as leadersand officials among the people. Have them cometo the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand therewith you. 17 I will come down and speak with youthere, and I will take of the Spirit that is on youand put the Spirit on them. They will help youcarry the burden of the people so that you will nothave to carry it alone.
  11. 11. Num 11:24-25 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud andspoke with him, and he took of the Spirit thatwas on him and put the Spirit on the seventyelders. When the Spirit rested on them, theyprophesied, but they did not do so again.Num 24:1-3Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORDto bless Israel, he did not resort to sorcery as atother times, but turned his face toward the desert.2 When Balaam looked out and saw Israelencamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God cameupon him 3 and he uttered his oracle:
  12. 12. Judg 3:9-109 But when they cried out to the LORD, he raisedup for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz,Calebs younger brother, who saved them. 10 TheSpirit of the LORD came upon him, so that hebecame Israels judge and went to war.Judg 6:33-34Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and othereastern peoples joined forces and crossed overthe Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.34 Then the Spirit of the LORD came uponGideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning theAbiezrites to follow him.
  13. 13. Judg 11:2929 Then the Spirit of the LORD came uponJephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from therehe advanced against the Ammonites.Judg 14:66 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him inpower so that he tore the lion apart with his barehands as he might have torn a young goat. Buthe told neither his father nor his mother what hehad done.
  14. 14. 1 Sam 10:6-76 The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you inpower, and you will prophesy with them; and youwill be changed into a different person.1 Sam 16:13-1413 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointedhim in the presence of his brothers, and from thatday on the Spirit of the LORD came upon Davidin power. Samuel then went to Ramah.14 Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed fromSaul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormentedhim.
  15. 15. 2 Chron 15:1-215:1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son ofOded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him,"Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin.Isa 61:1he Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,because the LORD has anointed meto preach good news to the poor.He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,Luke 2:25-2625 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for theconsolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was uponhim.
  16. 16. The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
  17. 17. John 7:37-3937 On the last and greatest day of theFeast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me anddrink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as theScripture has said, streams of living waterwill flow from within him." 39 By this hemeant the Spirit, whom those whobelieved in him were later to receive. Upto that time the Spirit had not beengiven, since Jesus had not yet beenglorified.
  18. 18. Why Indwelling?Rom 8:5-165 Those who live according to the sinful nature havetheir minds set on what that nature desires; but thosewho live in accordance with the Spirit have their mindsset on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful manis death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life andpeace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does notsubmit to Gods law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlledby the sinful nature cannot please God.
  19. 19. 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but bythe Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone doesnot have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yetyour spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if theSpirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you,he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to yourmortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is notto the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you liveaccording to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirityou put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons ofGod. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you aslave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."
  20. 20. The Indwelling: How ReceivedJohn 3:55 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter thekingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit .1 Cor 12:12-1313 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body —whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were allgiven the one Spirit to drink.Matt 28:18-20 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizingthem in the name of the Father and of the Son and of theHoly Spirit ,
  21. 21. Acts 2:38-4138 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one ofyou, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness ofyour sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39 The promise is for you and your children and for allwho are far off — for all whom the Lord our God willcall."40 With many other words he warned them; and hepleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corruptgeneration." 41 Those who accepted his message werebaptized, and about three thousand were added to theirnumber that day.
  22. 22. Baptism Withthe Holy Spirit
  23. 23. Baptisms Mentioned in the Bible• John’s Baptism• Baptism with Fire• Baptism with the Holy Spirit• Christian Baptism
  24. 24. There is only One BaptismEph 4:3-6 4 There is one body and one Spirit — just as you werecalled to one hope when you were called— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, whois over all and through all and in all.Baptism with the Holy SpiritMark 1:7-87 And this was his message: "After me will come onemore powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I amnot worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you withwater, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit ."
  25. 25. Christian BaptismJohn 3:55 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enterthe kingdom of God unless he is born of water and theSpirit .1 Cor 12:12-1313 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and wewere all given the one Spirit to drink.Matt 28:18-2019 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
  26. 26. Origin of what happened @ PentecostJoel 2:28-2928And afterward,I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.29 Even on my servants, both men and women,I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
  27. 27. Isa 32:1515 till the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field seems like a forest.Isa 44:33 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground;I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.Mark 1:7-88 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the HolySpirit .“Ezek 39:2929 I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out mySpirit on the house of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD."
  28. 28. PentecostActs 2:1-4When the day of Pentecost came, they were alltogether in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound likethe blowing of a violent wind came from heavenand filled the whole house where they weresitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues offire that separated and came to rest on each ofthem. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spiritand began to speak in other tongues as the Spiritenabled them.
  29. 29. The ObservationActs 2:5-115 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jewsfrom every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard thissound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, becauseeach one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who arespeaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hearsthem in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes andElamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and theparts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jewsand converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs — we hearthem declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
  30. 30. The Question & The AnswerActs 2:12-1712 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What doesthis mean?"13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have hadtoo much wine."14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice andaddressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live inJerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. Its only nine in themorning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:17 "In the last days, God says,I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
  31. 31. The Case of CorneliusActs 10At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, acenturion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. 2He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; hegave generously to those in need and prayed to Godregularly. 3 One day at about three in the afternoon hehad a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, whocame to him and said, "Cornelius!"4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" heasked.
  32. 32. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts tothe poor have come up as a memorial offeringbefore God. 5 Now send men to Joppa to bringback a man named Simon who is called Peter. 6He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose houseis by the sea."7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone,Cornelius called two of his servants and a devoutsoldier who was one of his attendants. 8 He toldthem everything that had happened and sentthem to Joppa.
  33. 33. 9 About noon the following day as they were ontheir journey and approaching the city, Peter wentup on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry andwanted something to eat, and while the meal wasbeing prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He sawheaven opened and something like a large sheetbeing let down to earth by its four corners. 12 Itcontained all kinds of four-footed animals, as wellas reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill andeat."14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have nevereaten anything impure or unclean."
  34. 34. 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not callanything impure that God has made clean."16 This happened three times, and immediately thesheet was taken back to heaven.17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of thevision, the men sent by Cornelius found out whereSimons house was and stopped at the gate. 18 Theycalled out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter wasstaying there.19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, theSpirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you.20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to gowith them, for I have sent them."21 Peter went down and said to the men, "Im the oneyoure looking for. Why have you come?"
  35. 35. 22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius thecenturion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, whois respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel toldhim to have you come to his house so that he couldhear what you have to say." 23 Then Peter invited themen into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some ofthe brothers from Joppa went along. 24 The followingday he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expectingthem and had called together his relatives and closefriends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius methim and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter madehim get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a manmyself."
  36. 36. 27 Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a largegathering of people. 28 He said to them: "You are wellaware that it is against our law for a Jew to associatewith a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that Ishould not call any man impure or unclean. 29 So whenI was sent for, I came without raising any objection. MayI ask why you sent for me?"30 Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in myhouse praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon.Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me 31and said, Cornelius, God has heard your prayer andremembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa forSimon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home ofSimon the tanner, who lives by the sea.
  37. 37. 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of youto come. Now we are all here in the presence of God tolisten to everything the Lord has commanded you to tellus."34 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true itis that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts menfrom every nation who fear him and do what is right. 36You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happenedthroughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptismthat John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus ofNazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how hewent around doing good and healing all who were underthe power of the devil, because God was with him.
  38. 38. 39 "We are witnesses of everything he did in the countryof the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him byhanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him from thedead on the third day and caused him to be seen.41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesseswhom God had already chosen — by us who ate anddrank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 Hecommanded us to preach to the people and to testifythat he is the one whom God appointed as judge of theliving and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about himthat everyone who believes in him receives forgivenessof sins through his name."
  39. 39. 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the HolySpirit came on all who heard the message. 45 Thecircumcised believers who had come with Peter wereastonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had beenpoured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heardthem speaking in tongues and praising God.Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these peoplefrom being baptized with water? They have received theHoly Spirit just as we have." 48 So he ordered that theybe baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then theyasked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
  40. 40. The Case of the SamaritansActs 8:4-234 Those who had been scattered preached the wordwherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city inSamaria and proclaimed the Christ there. 6 When thecrowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs hedid, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 Withshrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and manyparalytics and cripples were healed. 8 So there wasgreat joy in that city.9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practicedsorcery in the city and amazed all the people ofSamaria. He boasted that he was someone great,
  41. 41. 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him theirattention and exclaimed, "This man is the divine powerknown as the Great Power." 11 They followed himbecause he had amazed them for a long time with hismagic. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preachedthe good news of the kingdom of God and the name ofJesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And hefollowed Philip everywhere, astonished by the greatsigns and miracles he saw.14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samariahad accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and Johnto them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them thatthey might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the HolySpirit had not yet come upon any of them; they hadsimply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
  42. 42. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at thelaying on of the apostles hands, he offered them money19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyoneon whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God withmoney! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent ofthis wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he willforgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive tosin."
  43. 43. Don t Miracles Prove One’s Salvation?
  44. 44. Deut 13:1-5f a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you amiraculous sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign orwonder of which he has spoken takes place, andhe says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods youhave not known) "and let us worship them," 3you must not listen to the words of that prophetor dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you tofind out whether you love him with all your heartand with all your soul. 4 It is the LORD your Godyou must follow, and him you must revere.
  45. 45. Keep his commands and obey him; serve himand hold fast to him. 5 That prophet or dreamermust be put to death, because he preachedrebellion against the LORD your God, whobrought you out of Egypt and redeemed youfrom the land of slavery; he has tried to turnyou from the way the LORD your Godcommanded you to follow. You must purge theevil from among you.
  46. 46. 1 Sam 19:18-2418 When David had fled and made his escape, hewent to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saulhad done to him. Then he and Samuel went toNaioth and stayed there. 19 Word came to Saul:"David is in Naioth at Ramah"; 20 so he sent men tocapture him. But when they saw a group of prophetsprophesying, with Samuel standing there as theirleader, the Spirit of God came upon Sauls men andthey also prophesied. 21 Saul was told about it, andhe sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saulsent men a third time, and they also prophesied.
  47. 47. 22 Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to thegreat cistern at Secu. And he asked, "Where areSamuel and David?""Over in Naioth at Ramah," they said.23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spiritof God came even upon him, and he walked alongprophesying until he came to Naioth. 24 He strippedoff his robes and also prophesied in Samuelspresence. He lay that way all that day and night. Thisis why people say, "Is Saul also among theprophets?"
  48. 48. Rev 13:11-1411 Then I saw another beast, coming out of theearth. He had two horns like a lamb, but hespoke like a dragon. 12 He exercised all theauthority of the first beast on his behalf, andmade the earth and its inhabitants worship thefirst beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.13 And he performed great and miraculoussigns, even causing fire to come down fromheaven to earth in full view of men.
  49. 49. 2 Thess 2:9-129 The coming of the lawless one will be inaccordance with the work of Satan displayed inall kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs andwonders, 10 and in every sort of evil thatdeceives those who are perishing. They perishbecause they refused to love the truth and sobe saved. 11 For this reason God sends them apowerful delusion so that they will believe thelie 12 and so that all will be condemned whohave not believed the truth but have delightedin wickedness.
  50. 50. Mark 13:22-2322 For false Christs and false prophets willappear and perform signs and miracles todeceive the elect — if that were possible. 23 Sobe on your guard; I have told you everythingahead of time.
  51. 51. Matt 7:21-2321 "Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only hewho does the will of my Father who is inheaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day,Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons andperform many miracles? 23 Then I will tell themplainly, I never knew you. Away from me, youevildoers!
  52. 52. Miraculous Abilities of the Holy Spirit
  53. 53. Miracle Workers in the Old Testament• Moses• Elijah• Elisha• Joshua?
  54. 54. Miracles: Key New Testament PassageActs 2:42-4342 They devoted themselves to the apostlesteaching and to the fellowship, to the breakingof bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filledwith awe, and many wonders and miraculoussigns were done by the apostles.
  55. 55. Example of how Miraculous Abilities were TransmittedDeut 34:99 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moseshad laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what theLORD had commanded Moses.Acts 6:5-65 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full offaith and of the Holy Spirit ; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these mento the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.8 Now Stephen, a man full of Gods grace and power, did great wonders andmiraculous signs among the people.
  56. 56. Acts 8:4-84 Those who had been scattered preached theword wherever they went. 5 Philip went downto a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christthere. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and sawthe miraculous signs he did, they all paid closeattention to what he said. 7 With shrieks, evilspirits came out of many, and many paralyticsand cripples were healed. 8 So there was greatjoy in that city.
  57. 57. Acts 8:14-1914 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samariahad accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and Johnto them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them thatthey might receive the Holy Spirit , 16 because the HolySpirit had not yet come upon any of them; they hadsimply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, andthey received the Holy Spirit .18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the layingon of the apostles hands, he offered them money 19 andsaid, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whomI lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit ."
  58. 58. 2 Tim 1:5-7 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flamethe gift of God, which is in you through thelaying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give usa spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of loveand of self-discipline.Rom 1:1111 I long to see you so that I may impart to yousome spiritual gift to make you strong—
  59. 59. Historical Purposeof Miraculous Gifts
  60. 60. 2 Cor 12:1212 The things that mark an apostle — signs, wonders andmiracles — were done among you with greatperseverance.Acts 8:6-76 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculoussigns he did, they all paid close attention to what he said.Acts 14:33 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the messageof his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs andwonders.
  61. 61. John 10:37-38 38 But if I do it, even though you do not believe me,believe the miracles, that you may know andunderstand that the Father is in me, and I in theFather.“John 20:30-3130 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in thepresence of his disciples, which are not recorded inthis book. 31 But these are written that you maybelieve that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, andthat by believing you may have life in his name.
  62. 62. Heb 2:3-43 how shall we escape if we ignore such a greatsalvation? This salvation, which was first announcedby the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heardhim. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders andvarious miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spiritdistributed according to his will.Mark 16:19-2019 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he wastaken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand ofGod. 20 Then the disciples went out and preachedeverywhere, and the Lord worked with them andconfirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
  63. 63. Old Testament ParallelEx 14:3131 And when the Israelites saw the great power theLORD displayed against the Egyptians, the peoplefeared the LORD and put their trust in him and inMoses his servant.1 Kings 17:2424 Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know thatyou are a man of God and that the word of the LORDfrom your mouth is the truth."
  64. 64. Ex 4:1-9Moses answered, "What if they do not believe me orlisten to me and say, The LORD did not appear to you?"2 Then the LORD said to him, "What is that in yourhand?""A staff," he replied.3 The LORD said, "Throw it on the ground."Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, andhe ran from it. 4 Then the LORD said to him, "Reach outyour hand and take it by the tail." So Moses reached outand took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staffin his hand. 5 "This," said the LORD, "is so that they maybelieve that the LORD, the God of their fathers — the Godof Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob — hasappeared to you."
  65. 65. 6 Then the LORD said, "Put your hand inside yourcloak." So Moses put his hand into his cloak, andwhen he took it out, it was leprous, like snow.7 "Now put it back into your cloak," he said. So Mosesput his hand back into his cloak, and when he took itout, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh.8 Then the LORD said, "If they do not believe you orpay attention to the first miraculous sign, they maybelieve the second. 9 But if they do not believe thesetwo signs or listen to you, take some water from theNile and pour it on the dry ground. The water youtake from the river will become blood on the ground."
  66. 66. Is Position of theMiraculous a Proof of Salvation?
  67. 67. 1 Cor 12:29-3129 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers?Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing?Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Buteagerly desire the greater gifts.John 10:41-4241 and many people came to him. They said, "ThoughJohn never performed a miraculous sign, all that Johnsaid about this man was true." 42 And in that placemany believed in Jesus.
  68. 68. Jesus Downplayed the MiraculousJohn 7:3-53 Jesus brothers said to him, "You ought to leave hereand go to Judea, so that your disciples may see themiracles you do. 4 No one who wants to become apublic figure acts in secret. Since you are doing thesethings, show yourself to the world." 5 For even hisown brothers did not believe in him.
  69. 69. John 6:26-2726 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you arelooking for me, not because you saw miraculous signsbut because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food thatendures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will giveyou.John 6:3030 So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then willyou give that we may see it and believe you? Whatwill you do?
  70. 70. John 6:60-6260 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is ahard teaching. Who can accept it?"61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this,Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you?John 6:66-68 (note that this happened just after the miraculous feeding of the multitude)66 From this time many of his disciples turned backand no longer followed him.67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesusasked the Twelve.68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shallwe go? You have the words of eternal life.
  71. 71. Matt 11:20-2420 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which mostof his miracles had been performed, because they did notrepent. 21 "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had beenperformed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repentedlong ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will bemore bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgmentthan for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be liftedup to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If themiracles that were performed in you had been performedin Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tellyou that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day ofjudgment than for you."
  72. 72. Matt 7:21-2321 "Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, willenter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who doesthe will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many willsay to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we notprophesy in your name, and in your name drive outdemons and perform many miracles? 23 Then I willtell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me,you evildoers!‘Matt 24:24-2524 For false Christs and false prophets will appear andperform great signs and miracles to deceive even theelect — if that were possible.
  73. 73. John 20:27-29 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; seemy hands. Reach out your hand and put it into myside. Stop doubting and believe."28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me,you have believed; blessed are those who have notseen and yet have believed.“
  74. 74. The Heard-Hearted are not Changed by MiraclesJohn 11:46-48 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called ameeting of the Sanhedrin."What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here isthis man performing many miraculous signs. 48 If welet him go on like this, everyone will believe in him,and then the Romans will come and take away bothour place and our nation."
  75. 75. John 12:37-3837 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs intheir presence, they still would not believe in him.Luke 11:29-3229 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wickedgeneration. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will begiven it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign tothe Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to thisgeneration. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at thejudgment with the men of this generation and condemnthem; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen toSolomons wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon ishere. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgmentwith this generation and condemn it; for they repented at thepreaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
  76. 76. 2 Thess 2:8-12 9 The coming of the lawless one will be inaccordance with the work of Satan displayed inall kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs andwonders, 10 and in every sort of evil thatdeceives those who are perishing. They perishbecause they refused to love the truth and sobe saved. 11 For this reason God sends them apowerful delusion so that they will believe thelie 12 and so that all will be condemned whohave not believed the truth but have delightedin wickedness.
  77. 77. Old Testament ParallelEx 7:8-138 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 9 "When Pharaoh says toyou, Perform a miracle, then say to Aaron, Take your staff andthrow it down before Pharaoh, and it will become a snake."10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORDcommanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh andhis officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summonedwise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did thesame things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staffand it became a snake. But Aarons staff swallowed up their staffs.13 Yet Pharaohs heart became hard and he would not listen tothem, just as the LORD had said.
  78. 78. Ex 7:2222 But the Egyptian magicians did the same things bytheir secret arts, and Pharaohs heart became hard;he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as theLORD had said.Ex 8:6-76 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters ofEgypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. 7But the magicians did the same things by their secretarts; they also made frogs come up on the land ofEgypt.
  79. 79. Deut 13:1-51 If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you amiraculous sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign orwonder of which he has spoken takes place, andhe says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods youhave not known) "and let us worship them," 3you must not listen to the words of that prophetor dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you tofind out whether you love him with all yourheart and with all your soul.
  80. 80. 4 It is the LORD your God you must follow, andhim you must revere. Keep his commands andobey him; serve him and hold fast to him. 5 Thatprophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he preached rebellion against the LORDyour God, who brought you out of Egypt andredeemed you from the land of slavery; he hastried to turn you from the way the LORD yourGod commanded you to follow. You must purgethe evil from among you.
  81. 81. Ps 78:11-1811 They forgot what he had done, the wonders he hadshown them. 12 He did miracles in the sight of theirfathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. 13He divided the sea and led them through;he made thewater stand firm like a wall. 14 He guided them withthe cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.15 He split the rocks in the desert and gave themwater as abundant as the seas; 16 he brought streamsout of a rocky crag and made water flow down likerivers.17 But they continued to sin against him, rebelling inthe desert against the Most High. 18 They willfully putGod to the test by demanding the food they craved.
  82. 82. Jesus wants us to base our faith on reason.Luke 20:1717 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what is themeaning of that which is written:"The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone?Luke 20:41-4441 Then Jesus said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ isthe Son of David? 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:"The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand 43 until I makeyour enemies a footstool for your feet." 44 David calls him Lord. How then can he be his son?"

  85. 85. Exegesis of1Corinthians 12, 13 & 14
  86. 86. 1 Cor 12Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to beignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehowor other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spiritof God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus isLord," except by the Holy Spirit .4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit . 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different kinds of working, but the same God worksall of them in all men.7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given forthe common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spiritthe message of wisdom, to another the message ofknowledge by means of the same Spirit , 9 to another faith bythe same Spirit , to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit ,
  87. 87. 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, toanother distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking indifferent kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretationof tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; andthough all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is withChrist. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body —whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were all giventhe one Spirit to drink.14 Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15 Ifthe foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong tothe body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of thebody. 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I donot belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to bepart of the body
  88. 88. . 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense ofhearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would thesense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has arranged the partsin the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 Asit is, there are many parts, but one body.21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I dont need you!" Andthe head cannot say to the feet, "I dont need you!" 22 On thecontrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker areindispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are lesshonorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that areunpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while ourpresentable parts need no special treatment. But God hascombined the members of the body and has given greaterhonor to the parts that lacked it,
  89. 89. 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that itsparts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one partsuffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, everypart rejoices with it.27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is apart of it. 28 And in the church God has appointed first of allapostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers ofmiracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to helpothers, those with gifts of administration, and those speakingin different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are allprophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do allhave gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do allinterpret? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.
  90. 90. 1 Cor 13If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have notlove, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If Ihave the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries andall knowledge, and if I have a faith that can movemountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all Ipossess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does notboast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Lovedoes not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 Italways protects, always trusts, always hopes, alwaysperseveres.
  91. 91. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will bestilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 butwhen perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like achild, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, Iput childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but apoor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see faceto face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
  92. 92. 1 Corinthians 1414:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in atongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no oneunderstands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit . 3 Buteveryone who prophesies speaks to men for theirstrengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4 He who speaksin a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies thechurch. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies isgreater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets,so that the church may be edified.6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, whatgood will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation orknowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?
  93. 93. 7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such asthe flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is beingplayed unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8 Again, ifthe trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get readyfor battle? 9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligiblewords with your tongue, how will anyone know what you aresaying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedlythere are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of themis without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning ofwhat someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, andhe is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you areeager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build upthe church.13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should praythat he may interpret what he says. 14 For if I pray in atongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
  94. 94. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit , but I will alsopray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit , but I will alsosing with my mind. 16 If you are praising God with your spirit ,how can one who finds himself among those who do notunderstand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he doesnot know what you are saying? 17 You may be giving thankswell enough, but the other man is not edified.18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligiblewords to instruct others than ten thousand words in atongue.20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil beinfants, but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it iswritten: "Through men of strange tongues and through thelips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even thenthey will not listen to me," says the Lord.
  95. 95. 22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but forunbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not forunbelievers. 23 So if the whole church comes together andeveryone speaks in tongues, and some who do notunderstand or some unbelievers come in, will they not saythat you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever orsomeone who does not understand comes in while everybodyis prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinnerand will be judged by all, 25 and the secrets of his heart willbe laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God,exclaiming, "God is really among you!"26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you cometogether, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, arevelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must bedone for the strengthening of the church.
  96. 96. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two — or at the most three— should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet inthe church and speak to himself and God.29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the othersshould weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelationcomes to someone who is sitting down, the first speakershould stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so thateveryone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits ofprophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God isnot a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women shouldremain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says
  97. 97. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should asktheir own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a womanto speak in the church.36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you theonly people it has reached? 37 If anybody thinks he is aprophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what Iam writing to you is the Lords command. 38 If he ignoresthis, he himself will be ignored.39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do notforbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be donein a fitting and orderly way.

  103. 103. The Challenge for us Today
  104. 104. Acts 17:10-1210 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silasaway to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewishsynagogue. 11 Now the Bereans were of more noblecharacter than the Thessalonians, for they received themessage with great eagerness and examined the Scripturesevery day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 Many of theJews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greekwomen and many Greek men.
  105. 105. Jer 8:12From the least to the greatest, all are greedy forgain;prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. 11They dress the wound of my people as though it werenot serious."Peace, peace," they say, when there is nopeace. 12 Are they ashamed of their loathsomeconduct? No, they have no shame at all;they do noteven know how to blush.
  106. 106. Jer 23:9-409 Concerning the prophets :My heart is broken within me;all my bones tremble.I amlike a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, becauseof the LORDand his holy words. 10 The land is full ofadulterers;because of the curse the land lies parched andthe pastures in the desert are withered. The [ prophets ]follow an evil course and use their power unjustly.11 "Both prophet and priest are godless;even in mytemple I find their wickedness," declares the LORD. 12"Therefore their path will become slippery;they will bebanished to darkness and there they will fall.I will bringdisaster on them in the year they are punished," declaresthe LORD.
  107. 107. 13 "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw thisrepulsive thing:They prophesied by Baal and led mypeople Israel astray. 14 And among the prophets ofJerusalem I have seen something horrible:Theycommit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen thehands of evildoers,so that no one turns from hiswickedness. They are all like Sodom to me;the peopleof Jerusalem are like Gomorrah."15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty saysconcerning the prophets :"I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisonedwater, because from the prophets of Jerusalemungodliness has spread throughout the land."
  108. 108. 16 This is what the LORD Almighty says:"Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying toyou;they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions fromtheir own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17 Theykeep saying to those who despise me,The LORD says: You willhave peace. And to all who follow the stubbornness of theirhearts they say, No harm will come to you. 18 But which ofthem has stood in the council of the LORDto see or to hear hisword?Who has listened and heard his word? 19 See, thestorm of the LORDwill burst out in wrath,a whirlwind swirlingdown on the heads of the wicked. 20 The anger of the LORDwill not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes ofhis heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly. 21 Idid not send these prophets ,yet they have run with theirmessage;I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.
  109. 109. 22 But if they had stood in my council, they would haveproclaimed my words to my people and would have turnedthem from their evil ways and from their evil deeds.23 "Am I only a God nearby," declares the LORD,"and not aGod far away? 24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that Icannot see him?" declares the LORD."Do not I fill heaven andearth?" declares the LORD.25 "I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies inmy name. They say, I had a dream! I had a dream! 26 Howlong will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets ,who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? 27 Theythink the dreams they tell one another will make my peopleforget my name, just as their fathers forgot my name throughBaal worship. 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell hisdream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?" declares the LORD.
  110. 110. 29 "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like ahammer that breaks a rock in pieces?30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophetswho steal from one another words supposedly from me. 31Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who wagtheir own tongues and yet declare, The LORD declares. 32Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,"declares the LORD. "They tell them and lead my people astraywith their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least," declares theLORD.33 "When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you,What is the oracle of the LORD? say to them, What oracle? Iwill forsake you, declares the LORD. 34 If a prophet or a priestor anyone else claims, This is the oracle of the LORD, I willpunish that man and his household.
  111. 111. 35 This is what each of you keeps on saying to his friend orrelative: What is the LORDs answer? or What has the LORDspoken? 36 But you must not mention the oracle of theLORD again, because every mans own word becomes hisoracle and so you distort the words of the living God, theLORD Almighty, our God. 37 This is what you keep saying to aprophet: What is the LORDs answer to you? or What hasthe LORD spoken? 38 Although you claim, This is the oracleof the LORD, this is what the LORD says: You used the words,This is the oracle of the LORD, even though I told you thatyou must not claim, This is the oracle of the LORD. 39Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast you out of mypresence along with the city I gave to you and your fathers. 40I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace — everlasting shamethat will not be forgotten."
