New product development <ul><li>New product development  is a term used to describe the general process of creating and evaluating the strategy for the product concept generation. </li></ul><ul><li>New product development approach can acquire two forms:              a) the company can develop new products in its own laboratories              b) the company may sign contracts to develop new products with researchers,universities or other companies </li></ul>

New product development <ul><li>improvements and revisions of the existing products </li></ul><ul><li>extensions of the existing product lines </li></ul><ul><li>new products or new product lines </li></ul><ul><li>repositioning products: existing products, adapted to new uses or applications </li></ul><ul><li>entirely new products:  innovative products </li></ul>Types of products:

What is process? <ul><li>A process is a set of practices performed to achieve a given purpose; it may include tools, methods, materials, and/or people. </li></ul><ul><li>A process is a set of practices used to achieve a specific objective. </li></ul><ul><li>A process defines who , does what , when and how. </li></ul>Definitions:
  5. 5. What is process? <ul><li>“ The quality of a product is largely determined by the quality of the process that is used to develop and maintain it.” </li></ul><ul><li>Shewhart, Juran, Deming and Humphrey </li></ul>

Why Focus on Process? <ul><li>as opposed to a focus on people </li></ul><ul><li>- y our work force, on the average, is as “good” as it is trained </li></ul><ul><li>to be. </li></ul><ul><li>- w orking harder is not the answer. </li></ul><ul><li>- working smarter, through process, is the answer. </li></ul><ul><li>as opposed to a focus on technology </li></ul><ul><li>- technology applied without a suitable roadmap will not result in significant payoff. </li></ul><ul><li>- technology provides the most benefit in the context of an appropriate process roadmap. </li></ul>Process provides a constructive, high-leverage focus...
