  5. 5. go on Youtube…<br />than go to class<br />
  6. 6. if facebook were a country it would be the fourth largest in the world<br />
  7. 7. students would rather be online<br />would rather learn online<br />
  8. 8. yet the internet is a disorganizedplace to learn<br />
  9. 9. there are over 4 billion unique publicly accessed websites in the world<br />only 6 percent have educational material<br />
  10. 10. in 2002 Nintendo invested more than $140 million in Research and Development<br />the US Government spent halfas much on Research and Innovation in Education<br />
  11. 11. public education continues to struggle to keep up<br />
  12. 12. public education in Los Angeles is struggling just as much<br />
  13. 13. in the Summer of 2009, <br />LAUSD cut all summer school programs for grades K-8<br />225,000 children in LA take summer school every year<br />
  14. 14. what alternatives do parents have?<br />-hire costlytutors<br />-enroll their students in expensive private programs<br />-purchase boring workbooks<br />
  15. 15. its even harder now for parents to get free or low cost support for their children’s education<br />
  16. 16. the SOS Classroom<br />A collection of online resources for grades K-8<br />-Comprehensive and complete; covers all areas of the elementary and middle school curriculum<br />-Fun and easy to access; webpage built on Pageflakes technology, easy for anyone to navigate<br />-Informative and appealing; animations, games, fun characters, and videos makes learning interesting for kids<br />

  18. 18. the SOS project depends on crowdsourcing to:<br />-support the educational needs of students<br />-use social bookmarking to organize online education<br />-create an ever expanding online educational index<br />-teach students and their parents how to perpetuate their own education<br />this collection of resources is just a jumping off point…<br />
  19. 19. the SOS Classroom is more sustainable truly public education<br />
