  • Engineers are problem solvers! They use math and science in practical ways to benefit mankind. People have always held engineers in high regard; after all, engineers make the world go round. Most technological advances – automobiles, computers, the internet, medical devices, the space shuttle, airplanes, robots, renewable energy – can be attributed to the work of engineers.
  • Industrial engineering concerns the design and analysis of systems that involve people, equipment and materials. Industrial engineers work to improve efficiency in industrial operations, quality of products and services, and safety and productivity of workers. As an industrial engineer you might design and implement a computer integrated manufacturing system; work with robotics systems in a manufacturing environment; take part in long-range corporate planning; develop and implement a quality control system; engage in work station design to ensure human safety and productivity; or develop computer systems for information control. The demand for industrial engineers has grown dramatically over the last two decades as a result of the need for organizations to efficiently provide products and services in an increasingly competitive and global marketplace.
  • Chemical engineers are creative problem solvers whose work touches all of our lives. Chemical engineers are involved in creating new wonder drugs and materials that improve life on earth and make space exploration a reality. They even work on the soles of your sport shoes, the compact discs for your listening pleasure, and the chocolate coating on your favorite candy. Petrochemicals, biomedicines, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, plastics and fibers, and energy and synthetic fuels are among the materials of the modern world that are the result of chemical engineering. Many older industries, such as pulp and paper, metals and ceramics, paints and coatings, textiles and electroplating, also rely on the expertise of chemical engineers. Chemical engineers are working on ways to reduce acid rain and smog, to recycle and reduce wastes, to develop new sources of environmentally clean energy, as well as ways to use existing resources more safely and efficiently.
  • CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING: Civil engineers improve and protect the environment; provide facilities for community living, industry, and transportation; and provide structures for human use. The buildings people live and work in, transportation systems, city and town services, and water supplies all reflect creative planning and application of engineering principles by civil engineers. Civil engineers measure and map the earth’s surface and use these maps to situate their projects. Civil engineers plan, design, construct, and maintain highways, railroads, canals, and airports. They regulate rivers and control floods; build docks, pipelines, seawalls; develop harbors; design and build plants and systems to bring pure water to homes and factories; design and build systems for sewage and refuse disposal; manage wetlands; and irrigate arid areas.
  • COMPUTER ENGINEERING: There has recently been an explosion in the number of uses of computer technology, driven by applications in the Internet, multimedia, medicine, and wireless communications. At the core of these technologies are Computer Engineers, researching, designing and developing hardware and software solutions to enable these advances. Computer Engineering offers a rich base of math and science, combined with courses in hardware design and software languages and models. Some of the subjects that you will study include: operating systems, computer-aided design, programming languages, computer architecture, optimization theory, and software engineering. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING: Electrical engineers have been primarily responsible for the development of computers, integrated circuits, the pacemaker, satellite communications, space navigation, microprocessors, television and the means for providing energy. Many electrical engineers are involved with the traditional activities of system design and development in the information sciences area (communication, computation and control) and in the energy resources area. Other electrical engineering graduates apply their skills to such disciplines as ocean exploration, meteorology, experimental psychology, electronic music, health care systems, bioelectronics and educational devices for the handicapped.
