  2. 2. AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER • A range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. • The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism.
  3. 3. CLASSIFICATIONS OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER -Autism Disorder -Childhood Disintegrative Disorder -Asperger Syndrome - Pervasive Development Disorder

GET THE FACTS: • 1/68 children in the USA are diagnosed. • 1/42 boys & 1/189 girls are diagnosed. • About 50,000 teens with autism become adults & lose school-based autism services each year. • 1/3 of people with autism are nonverbal. • 1/3 of people with autism have an intellectual disability. • Medical & mental health issues frequently accompany autism.   6. 6. AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER ACTION PLAN ELK GROVE VILLAGE PUBLIC LIBRARY Mission: Act as the Concierge of the community while implementing universal design for patrons, staff and volunteers. Objectives: -Increase awareness of the nature & characteristics of ASD. -Understand how the role of EGVPL can serve the needs of the people effected by ASD. -Commit to leading an ADS action plan for the community. Goals: -Train staff, volunteers and patrons to create a culture that is ASD friendly and welcoming. -Create ASD resources: website, materials, tools, signs. -Add ASD accommodations to programs and services.
