Matthew Pattinson – Uncovering Ideas that Matter

  1. 1. UNCOVERING IDEAS THAT MATTER Matthew Pattinson @MTPattinson
  2. 2. HIGH POTENTIAL IDEAS ARE KILLED BEFORE THE EVEN GET STARTED
  3. 3. CAN ONLY ACT ON A FEW IDEAS AT A TIME BUT ITS DIFFICULT TO KNOW WHICH OFFER POTENTIAL FOR IMPACT
  4. 4. STUCK BUILDING SOMETHING THAT NOBODY WANTS ON TIME AND WITHIN BUDGET
  5. 5. PROGRAMS CAN BE DIFFICULT TO FUND AND OPERATE ON A LARGE SCALE
  6. 6. DYNAMIC MODELS, NOT STATIC PLANS, ARE THE FASTEST WAY TO OUTLINE A NEW PRODUCT OR SERVICE
  7. 7. Plans • Content is made up • Time consuming • Instantly out of date • Not effective for communication
  8. 8. Models • Fast • Iterative • Concise • Accessible
  9. 9. THE LEAN CANVAS IS THE BEST TOOL TO BUILD MODELS
  10. 10. Lean Canvas
  11. 11. Why the lean canvas • Problem-focused • Actionable • Connects money to mission
  12. 12. Using the lean canvas • When • Ideation • Strategic conversations • Who • Field staff • Leadership
  13. 13. THE BEST WAY TO FIND AN IDEA THAT MATTERS IS TO TEST LOTS OF MODELS.
  14. 14. Ideate and Screen • After brainstorming screen ideas based on: • Value – appropriateness of pain it addresses, who benefits and how • Impact - Risk relative to potential impact • Scale - Cost and potential for mass adoption • Rather than look for THE answer we should be open to try different options and allow data from performance in the real-world
  15. 15. Test models • Test riskiest assumptions as quickly and cheaply as possible • Define expected outcomes upfront • Measure actions not words • Define conditions for success / failure • Time box • Compare it to expected results to determine what works and what doesn’t • Pivot or persevere
  16. 16. Test critical hypotheses
