Establishment of digital archive on agricultural theses and journals of bangladesh md sekender ali

 1. 1. WELCOME www.e-asia.org
 2. 2. Establishment of Digital Archive on Agricultural Theses and Journals of Bangladesh

Window 3 (University-wide Innovation) of AIF

HEQEP, UGCB

Sub-Project Management Team

Sub-Project Manager: Prof. Dr. Md. Sekender Ali, SAU, Dhaka

Alternate Sub-Project Manager: Prof. M. Zahidul Haque, SAU, Dhaka

Member: Dr. Md. Golam Farouque, BAU

Member: Dr. Md. Abiar Rahman, BSMRAU

 3. 3. Introduction

Upto June/2010, 14009 students conducted agricultural research as a part of their MS/M.Sc. and PhD degree from:

BAU, Mymensingh

BSMRAU, Gazipur

SAU, Dhaka

Twenty three (23) journals are also publishing from theses three universities each of which have several volumes and issues.

Researchers and academicians of agricultural disciplines generally review past studies from the hard copies of theses/dissertation and journals which is very difficult, time consuming and costly.

All the MS and PhD students of these universities are to conduct individual research and to submit thesis/dissertation to the university authority.

 4. 4.

Teachers also conduct research and publish their research articles in journals.

Digitization of information is an important goal of the present government of Bangladesh.

On the other hand, development of highly skilled technical and scientific personnel in different fields of agricultural science in order to conduct research, to provide higher education and to disseminate research findings is a major goal of the selected three universities.

On these considerations, the management team of this sub-project decided to establish a digital archive on agricultural theses and journals of Bangladesh by covering mainly the theses and journals of BAU, BMSRAU and SAU.

 5. 5. Specific Objectives

To enhance and update the IT infrastructure

To established digital archive on agricultural

theses and journals of Bangladesh

To increase the number of users (teachers,

researchers, librarians, students, policy makers, extension providers, farmers etc.) of the digital archive on agricultural theses and journals of Bangladesh

To continue the digital archive of agricultural

theses and journals of Bangladesh

 6. 6. Benefits

If the digital agricultural archive is done, the future researchers will be able to review past studies quickly in an easiest way by visiting a single website.

They will be able to know about all the past theses and journals, as a result duplication/manipulation of research will be controlled.

The supervisors of the MS/PhD students will be able to stop their students from copying/manipulating past theses.

Knowledge of students, teachers and future researchers will be increased and researchers will be able to search new research ideas/problems.

Results of MS and PhD research will be disseminated world-wide.

Nationwide digitization aim of the present government will be fulfilled.

 7. 7.

Institutional and academic quality of the universities as well as agricultural research organizations of Bangladesh will be improved.

Reviewing cost of past studies for researchers will be drastically reduced as they will get all the previous information from a single website in a systematic way.

Beside the selected three universities, following six public universities of Bangladesh have agricultural faculties/disciplines and are going to start MS and PhD courses on agricultural disciplines:

SAU, Sylhet

PSTU, Patuakhali

HMDSTU, Dinajpur

CVASU, Chittagong

KU, Khulna

RU, Rajshahi

 8. 8.

The theses and journals of these universities may be covered under this archive later with limited cost.

The proposed digital archive will be a milestone for other universities to prepare such type of digital archives.

That will be ultimately helpful to the national development related to agricultural research activities.

 9. 9. Strategic Analysis

Strengths

Now, about 15000 MS/M.Sc. theses and PhD

dissertation and 23 Journals are available in the

libraries of BAU, BSMRAU and SAU which

will be covered under the proposed digital

agricultural archive.

The Sub-project Team has the capacity to

prepare the archive with technical help from

consulting (ICT) firm.

 10. 10.

Weakness

Dependency of students and researchers only on hard copies of theses and Journals

Lack of soft copies of MS/M.Sc. theses and PhD dissertation and Journals in the libraries and websites of BAU, BSMRAU and SAU

Lack of IT equipments in the universities

Lack of adequate knowledge to prepare the digital archive

Large volume work to prepare the digital archive

Unavailability of properly trained personnel

 11. 11.

Opportunities

Some consulting firms can prepare the proposed digital archive.

There is sufficient time for the Sub-Project Team to supervise and prepare the proposed digital archive.

The web-site of the digital archive can be linked with BdREN and web-sites of the concerned universities.

There are a huge number of users of the proposed archive.

Very small physical work place is required to prepare, maintain and updating the archive.

Time and cost of the future researchers for reviewing of past research work will be reduced.

IT infrastructures of the universities will be developed.

Inter-collaboration among the universities will be developed.

World-wide dissemination of the agricultural research work findings of Bangladesh will be increased.

Digitization of future theses, dissertations and journals will be continued by trained Library personnel.

 12. 12.

Threats

Computer virus may corrupt the Computer Systems used for editing and digitizing

Editing the site’s content by fraud authority may hamper the sites integrity

Improper maintenance of the ICT equipments may destroy the data of the web-portal
